Website question

VeggieBadger

My mom is in charge of an early literacy program being implemented at Head Start facilities in Milwaukee. Since I'm at home for winter break, my mom has asked me to work on developing a website for the program. I have never done this before, so I'm looking for a few tips on getting started. Are there any good programs or websites for this? I have Publisher, but I don't know if that is very beneficial. I think she is looking for something similar to this: http://www.earlyreadingfirst.spps.org/

Thanks

The first thing you have to ask yourself, is does the website have to "do anything"? Is it just a bunch of static information that your mom/her staff doesn't have to update, or does it need to be backed by a database?

When it comes to websites, there's a HUGE gap between what's easy to do and what's difficult.

I think ideally there would be a section for themes and curriculum that could be updated monthly, and it would be nice to allow some other updates every six months or so. I don't think that either of these capabilities are absolutely necessary. Mostly the website would contain static information, links, and some pictures.

I would recommend going with a hosted solution like "PHP Nuke":

http://www.maiahost.com/cms/PHP-Nuke_Hosting.html

It requires no programming, and allows you to get a site up in a hurry where you can allow users to manage content (articles, images, etc). It won't allow you to create a COMPLETELY custom (from scratch) website, but it will more than likely be "good enough". If you don't have an HTML designer or programmer handy, I would not really recommend doing it yourself completely from scratch...
