Red Sox nearing deal for Penny?

Too bad. He's a guy I was hoping DM would target on a short-term, incentive-laden deal.

It's so frustrating that teams like Boston et al can take risks like this, and if they don't pan out, it just doesn't really matter.

It doesn't mention money details, but I'm guessing 1 year/7 million with a team option plus incentives.

You make it sound like the Brewers didn't do this with Gagne. I'm sure Melvin looked at Penny but other teams were willing to guarantee more money.

When something like this happens, it's also important to remember that maybe the player just doesn't want to play in Milwaukee rather than blaming Melvin for not offering the same deal. For all we know, Melvin contacted Penny's agent and they weren't interested in coming here for that price.

It'd be a decent deal for the Red Sox, but I'll keep holding out hope that they end up with Sheets.

Edit: Apparently, that's what happened with Penny. He has a quote on WEEI.com about the negotiations:

"There were a lot of teams involved," said Penny in a phone conversation, "but I wanted to go somewhere where I knew we had a great chance at winning and Boston is that place."
