BBS: Turnbow Article

sgtcluels

I thought it was interesting. Beyond the box score: DBow

A good article talking about Turnbows "stuff", pretty much they point out his FA unable to find the zone, and once players laid of his nasty slurve he was pretty much done for. The article hints at the he needs a change to keep people from looking dead red fastball. (Also did anyone else catch his Fastball losing 2mph?)

Not to blow my own horn, but on 11/15/07, I posted the following in a thread "Melvin on WSSP" (page 116 of forums)

"I don't think physically he's the same pitcher he was in 2005 either. Back then he routinely worked with a 97-98 mph fastball. This past season (2007) he worked mostly 94-95."

I'm sure I mentioned this one or two other times, but this is the one I found.

I wasn't worried about TBow "slowing down" to 94-95 if it meant better accuracy on the pitches. Was the speed drop because of a change in mechanics to get better results, or the loss of strength? But it doesn't matter how fast you throw if you can't spot your offspeed pitches. Ask Ben Hendrickson about that.

If Turnbow had any sort of 3rd pitch at all, he would have been deadly. Anything to question the fastball--a changeup, sinker, anything. When he was hitting 97-98 he was great, but even in his good times when he lost control of the breaking pitch he was done for. As mentioned, he also could not pitch with runners on base at all--now that I think of it, what was Yost thinking when he brought that guy in to get out of jams? (and I'm not even a Yost basher!)

I really miss the guy, though. He was probably the only pitcher I have ever seen where when he comes in, everyone in the ballpark stops what they were doing/talking about and watches him pitch. You always knew something exciting was going to happen when he came it--although it usually wasn't in a good way. Definitely one of a kind.
