Wii suggestions?? - Official Wii thread- tips, tricks, cheats, system info.

MillerParkSouth

so my girlfriend got me a wii, this is the first new gaming system i've had since Genesis, so i'm pretty clueless as to what good games are. I was thinking about getting Madden 09 and MLB 2K8 or whatever. anybody play these? what's this all-play thing I see on just about all of the sports games too? any other good game/accessory suggestions would be very helpful.

edit: title making this the official all for one thread for wii.

Definitely invest in some rechargeable batteries...

If you like driving games, Mario Kart is a blast. We have Madden 09, and that is a lot of fun. If you want an adult/shooter game -- Resident Evil is very well done.

The Wii has been a good investment for our family -- the games are pretty strong for the "non-gamers" and younger players --

yeah, I've heard Mario Kart is awesome, but impossible to find. I was a huge fan of that for N64, so i'll have to find that sometime. Think i'm going to pick up Madden and Mario Galaxy, which I hear is amazing, tonight.

I also 'named' my wii Gabe Gross. Thought some people around here might appreciate that, haha.

Resident Evil 4 for the Wii is perhaps the best game I've ever played in my life. The control scheme, after a 30-minute learning curve, is very intuitive, and the story is great.

Other titles I've enjoyed are Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Super Mario Strikers, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Oh, I'm so jealous! Mario Kart is super fun. For Wii, I really like their gun games like Alien Syndrome (I think). Remember arcade games that you would have to shoot a gun to kill aliens, cowboys, etc.? Well those type of games work really well on the Wii. I'm not a fan of hunting, so I haven't tried those games but I'm sure they're similar. Also I'm a big fan of SSX, so I'd love to try Shaun White's game.

BTW, I'm not a gamer by any means.

Huh, I waddled into Wal-Mart and found it rather easily...

Agreed, RE4 is the greatest thing since Ryan Braun went skinny dipping in a tub of stadium sauce.

Maybe your boyfriend could stuff your stocking with RE4? It is a crazy good game.

I actually laughed out loud when I read this. Thanks for the pick-me-up, FtJ. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Oh, and I downloaded Mega Man 9 yesterday and played it and echo the earlier sentiment: it's a great buy. Really challenging like the earliest Mega Man games, and not too much of a burden on the wallet.

I haven't tried Shaun White's game yet, but I have to post if only to stop people from picking up SSX Blur for the Wii. It's just not that good; they changed all the mechanics to adjust to motion control....by replacing the fun parts of the game (ubertricks) with attempts to flail the wiimote & nunchuck in a pattern, and trying to guess why it didn't work.

My biggest disappointment of this generation is that there hasn't been a good SSX game.

Also, if you like strategy games at all, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is the best game I've played on the console (mainly because it ignores most of the Wii's trappings, and sticks to the series' base). It's a direct sequel to the GameCube version (which I actually prefer, for what it's worth), but is one of the most challenging strategy games I've ever played.

Boom Blox is a great, fun casual / party game.

Got my daughter a Wii--I know nothing about video games, as the only thing I've probably played in the last 5 years was Tiger Woods on the PS2.

That being said, how do you actually play the sports games? Am I actually performing throwing motions/batting swings if I play baseball or is there just a basic remote? I really used to like hockey games, how are those played?

Sorry if these questions seem really stupid, but like I said, I almost never play games and know absolute zero about Wii games.

Thanks!

In Wii Sports (if that's what you were referring to), the actual arm motions are the key to playing the sports games. In other games, such as MLB 2K9 or Madden, you will have to check the manual to see what the control schemes are, but more often than not Wii games attempt to incorporate the Wii Remote's motion-sensing capabilities, so it's a good bet that some sort of motions will be involved.

I have played the Wii Sports with my daughter and I knew those were "active" games with the remotes. I was just curious if the "real" (Madden, etc.) sports games incorporated the same actions.

Anyone know anything about MLB 2K9 as far as the game itself?
I haven't read anything on it yet, but the last two have been incredibly bad, so I'm not getting it this year until I read reviews that all the problems have been fixed. I will probably try MLB Front Office Manager first.

MLB Power Pros is easily the best baseball game on the Wii. I'd even argue it is the best console baseball game period.

really? that's interesting. I haven't played it, but I was really turned off by the 'Lego' type graphics. Maybe i'll have to take a closer look.

What was so bad about the last 2 MLB 2K games? I'm kind of planning on buying 2K9 when it comes out, but maybe i'll have to hold off.

As far as the Madden game goes, you definitely have to move the remote/nunchuck to play. throwing motion, tackling, kicking is all done with a flick of the wrist on the wii remote.

The last 2 2k games had good graphics and the players had cool animations that were similar to real life, but to me it didn't play like baseball should. The physics of batting were terrible, a pitch off the inside of the plate could be hit for an opposite field home run, and the player would look out into left field as it went over the right field wall. The framerate was really bad, making it very hard to field, and when the ball was put into play it felt and looked like a ball on a string, if that makes any sense, it just doesn't seem like a baseball. There are far too many home runs, and the presentation of home runs is bad. There is no crowd excitement when one is hit, or even noise at all. There is no guessing if it's going to be a home run, it just shows a red arrow as soon as it's hit, so there is no tension build up guessing if it's going to make it over the wall, or if the fielder is going to make his 5th miraculous home run saving catch of the game.

I much preferred MVP 05, it felt more realistic, you could take walks, and you actually had time to see a pitch and decide if you wanted to swing at it. In 2k you essentially have to decide before the pitch as there is no way of knowing if its going to be a ball or strike, and if you play without adjusting the sliders it's going to be a strike 90% of the time. The player ratings in 2k have been pretty bad too, but those can obviously be adjusted.

2k is good if you prefer an arcade style baseball game, but I need something that is more realistic, which is why I might get a Ps3 just for The Show.

And yes I think Power Pros is much better than 2k if you can get past the graphics and player models, it is a more realistic in depth baseball game, although you can't take walks in it either.

I will wholeheartedly agree that MVP 05 is an incredible game. It's really too bad that they don't make those games anymore. The reviews i've read on 2K8 aren't very good either, but the reviewers expressed optimism that the game developers would listen to the fans and remedy some of their complaints similar to what they apparently did with Madden. Hopefully that will be the case. Maybe i'll have to see if I can pick up Power Pros somewhere for cheap-ish.

I rented Call of Duty: World at War and I thought it was cool. My wife and I got through it in a few weeks (we're NOT hardcores) and it was challenging for us without being impossible. We did look at online guides a few times for hints but never needed a cheat.

I own the latest Tiger Woods and like it. Putting with the wiimote can be a little frustrating at times but it's very easy to find an online game and 18 holes only takes a half hour.

I rented Big Brain Academy for my young girl and I haven't even shown it to her. It's going to be WAY too hard for a 4-5 year old. She can't read yet. Plus I haven't beaten my wife at it yet. I could see it being a very good party game, though.

I rented MLB 2K8. It definitely isn't perfect but I love the pitching portion. The catcher actually 'calls' the game and sets up where he wants the pitch. You can get into the motion as much as you want. It really only requires a flick of the wrist. I too like the fielding animations. They seem very realistic. Batting can be very easy at times. I just had 7 homers in a game and 5 were opposite field shots. 2 were pulled down the line by Yo. I still haven't figured out running. I always have trouble with this part of baseball games. I haven't messed with the settings too much because I like winning. I like to play with the current Brewer roster so the "Player Finder" feature easily helps you find guys to trade or pick up. I'm hoping the 2K9 version will have online play with (I hope) the ability to keep the rosters current. I've never used an online baseball game but I'm assuming they'd work like that. I too loved the MVP series on the PS2. I actually like the college baseball game for the PS2 they came out with after the MVP series ended. You had to swing AND throw with the analog stick. It felt pretty cool and no throws were automatic. Kept you into it all the way through the play. Haven't bought any other baseball games in the last couple years. Nothing compared to MVP, in my opinion.

My wife is currently addicted to Animal Crossing: City Folk. I'm too embarrassed to really talk about it much. I've played it way too much myself.
