McLouth

Recommended Posts

He should really be a left fielder, he's like -15 to -20 runs in center by a lot of metrics. You'd also be buying really high on him, he will probably drop some offensive production this year. He's a good option in left or maybe right, but he loses way too much of his value by playing center for me to even consider him.

I think that McLouth had just as good of a year as Braun did this year. And to top it off he won a Gold Glove. He doesnt quite have the history offensively that Braun does, but this past season puts him on a pretty good level.

I dont think the Brewers have what it would take to get him. They maybe have 5 players in the entire system that would bring him in, only one of which would be a one for one deal. The rest of them would require the Brewers to add a prospect.

What makes you believe its his career year? Its like saying Weeks had a career year in 07. McLouth hasnt played all too much
Last season he hit .276 with 26 HR, 94 RBI, 46 2B, 23 SBs & only 3 CS, an .853 OPS (.356 OBP, .497 SLG), plus he won a Gold Glove. Yeah, he's good & cheap. But what makes you think it might not take much to pry him away from Pittsburgh?

In another thread, you were also suggesting that maybe Hart & some garbage would get us Matt Cain. Might get us Jonathan Cain (50+ year old keyboard guy from Journey). Seriously, you seem to be on a run of highly overestimating other teams' willingness to move their good players, or at least underestimating what they'd want in return.

McLouth had a good year (with the bat, at least) last year, but there is nothing in his past to suggest he's really that good. His minor league track record is unimpressive. He seems like a scrub who had a career year to me, I would stay far away from him. He may really be as good as he was last year, but I don't think it is in the Brewers' interests to find out. He would cost too much and isn't a sure enough upgrade on Corey Hart (109 career OPS+ to Corey's 106). He's also viewed as a centerfielder by the Pirates, but he really isn't one (he may be the worst defensive CF in baseball). That would also cost the Brewers in a trade because Pitt views him as playing a premium position while Milwaukee would view him as playing a far less important defensive position.

To conclude, I don't believe buying guys at the peak of their value is smart. Look at how Doug has been burned with contract extensions to guys like Turnbow, Hall, and Clark right after their career years. Look at how he overpaid Suppan after he had his most notable season. It just doesn't work out unless there is more of a track record of excellence.

The Braves put in an inquiry into Doumit and McClouth, and apparently the asking price was sky high. I don't think it would be worth the Brewers' while.

Neal Huntington doesn't seem to have a clue when it comes to buying low/selling high. He's been trying to trade Jack Wilson for like 2 years now, which obviously shows he doesn't know how to value players.

There was a rumor during the winter meetings that Huntington was being unrealistic when talking with other teams about the value of his own players so I would imagine that they are asking an arm and a leg and probably way to much. I think the rumor originally started because of his asking price for Adam LaRoche which I guess was way to high for a league average at best 1st basemen.
