Netflix

I've had both BBonline and NetFlix. So far I like Netflix by a land slide. Both had the same turn around time (1 day receive, 1 day to get next in queue) but noticed if I was looking for older movies or TV series the wait time was pretty bad. Netflix has much faster turn around time for things in queue, yet BBOL has a faster new releases queue. So for me at least, Netflix works better as I like to watch some strange things. And the in store swap is some what of a joke. You have to pay for it, and the store selections are pretty weak sauce. It took the store about 3 days to mail my BBOL stuff, so my queue didn't move because they were lazy.

Netflix has a number of movies available for immediate download via internet. I've done it a couple of times and been pleased with the resolution.

I am thinking of signing up for Netflix mainly so I can stream straight through my PS3. However, when I browse Netflix's library I cannot find any new releases available to stream. It almost appears that the only movies available to stream are those that have already been released for HBO, Showtime, etc. Can anyone confirm my suspicions?

Yeah, that's true. Presumably because they can't undercut those channels who paid for the airing rights to the copyright holders. I don't think anything is available for streaming until it's run through PPV and the pay channels.

OTOH, a whole bunch of Criterions were made available for streaming lately.

My strategy, have them send you the discs of the latest new releases, watch the older stuff via streaming.

I understand the studios, etc. have to protect other distribution channels, delaying the release of newer movies via live streaming on Netflix. However, even at that the choices available for streaming is woefully inadequate in my opinion. It's 2010 tomorrow, and it's hard to believe we haven't reached the point where we can view any movie or TV show we want, any time we want. Frankly, I would be willing to pay $20-$30 a month to Netflix if they could offer that.

We already pay $24 a month to Netflix....the service you're proposing would come at a much higher price.

If you're interested in documentaries or tv series, the live streaming is more than adequate. Everything else we get the discs for.

We have reached that point. Nobody wants to miss out on making extra money from their movies. If we could get any movie just by paying a $20-$30 monthly fee as soon as it is released on DVD , why would anybody in their right mind buy DVD's anymore.

We always get movies with no wait, 2 days after we mail 'em in. If you are a "non-profitable" customer...someone who gets 10-12+ movies a month on a 2-3 plan, they bump you down and send them to folks like me, who often keeps a movie a month or two, because we're watching the Brewers and Deadliest Catch Marathons. My wife had one for 3.5 months not long ago...Netflix adores us.

i havent bought a movie in at least 3 years with the exception of a few blue ray movies. because i have netflix and a computer, im not wasting money on buying movies. and as far as getting the new releases, i get 3 movies at a time and get every new movie that comes out each week. you just have to mail them back on the right day. and i couldnt be happier with them

I was speaking about instant access to any movie, but yeah even with the slow access that Netflix offers I wouldn't buy a movie again either. If all you had to do to get instant access to any movie was a flat $30 a month fee, that would be really cheap. Most people probably already have instant access through their cable/satellite company or a videogame console. There are limits on the downloads though. I think you can only watch a movie once and have to finish it within 24 hours of starting through the Xbox for instance.

With Hulu and Netflix you can pretty much have access to any movie or TV show for just a few dollars a month. Most of Netflix streaming I use for older TV shows, while Hulu I use for recent shows. Then I just get 2 discs at a time for movies and watch obscure stuff that way as I buy movies I like so I can rewatch them whenever I please.

My advice is to build a gigantic Netflix cue. Spend a few months trying to get to everything as fast as possible. Then realize one day that you don't have nearly enough time to watch all of the stuff that is kind of sort of worth watching. Then sit back and then enjoy that for less than half the price of cable you know get to watch whatever you'd like except certain live sports. Netflix even helped me watch less TV in general. TV series that I'd have to follow religiously to keep track of story lines I just started to wait until they were on DVD. And I know that by now I've lost interest in even following a lot of those.

I had Netflix a few years ago and canceled because my mailbox was right on a sidewalk and stuff kept getting broken and stolen. I have since moved and re-signed up after xmas. I was meant to get my first two disks on the 26th and still don't have them. Not sure what to think. I know the post office gets backed up so I'm reserving judgement, but this kind of stinks.

Netflix's streaming resembles something like HBO because they backdoored their way into being able to do it. The movie studios wouldn't agree to let Netflix do this, so they made a deal with the Starz channel instead to stream the content they have access to. This means that some movies eventually can't be streamed anymore right now, when Starz loses rights to broadcast, so to does Netflix.

Word is that the studios are very upset with Starz and Netflix, but Netflix is hoping to prove to the studios that this is a viable option for them. You would think these companies would have learned the lesson that the culture has changed and the way media is delivered has changed and is changing. Yet, here again, they try to cling to their outdated methods in fear that they'll lose revenue, instead of working to find the new revenue streams.

I am pretty upset at Netflix for this ridiculous deal they signed with Warner Brothers which will result in New Releases not being available for 28 days until after the release date. I think it starts next month. If other studios follow this I will be very dissapointed.

Im thrilled about it. It will allow me to cut my subscription cost to fewer DVDs at home at the same time and I have no problem waiting an extra month for a new release, and if I really, really cant wait, then Red Box should be able to fill the void for $1. If all the studios did this and everything were available for streaming it would be great.

Honestly, my queue is big enough and I see enough films in the theater so if I wasn't motivated enough to see it in the theater, I'm not sure how motivated I'd be to see a release in the first few weeks anyways.

I agree with Robert, if I didnt go see it in the theater during the few months it was floating around at various places I dont see how I cant wait 4 extra weeks to see it on DVD or Blu Ray.
