Brewers need another bat

We cant have Jenkins and Mench playing LF. Here are some OF that may be available

CF Shane Victorino

LF Adam Dunn

RF Ken Griffey Jr

CF Aaron Rowand

RF Jermaine Dye

What one of the 5 would you want and do you want to see another bat added?

To add another bat, you'd have to:

a) give up things of value

b) take on salary

c) Have Jenkins and Mench both be satisfied with being bench players, at least to the point where they're doing their jobs.

Earl Weaver talked about bench players and platoon players at length... You not only have to find players who can play well for you, but you have to find ones who are willing to do their jobs. Not all starters will excel as bench players, and vice versa because of this.

I think Mench's numbers vs. LHP and Jenkins numbers vs. RHP are as good as you're going to get without breaking the bank. If you told me I could have KGJ as my every day LF starter, I'd be ecstatic... but looking at what Melvin had to give up to get Linebrink, I don't think it's in the cards.

this seems like the key point. Judging from what they had to give up to get a guy like Linebrink, I don't think the Brewers have the assets to get a Dunn or a Griffey or even a Dye anymore. I mean, they obviously could if they wanted to give up Braun or Gallardo or maybe Weeks or Villanueva or Hardy, but those moves would cripple the team long-term and probably hurt the team this year too (with the possible exception of Weeks).

That's what I don't understand about the Linebrink move. Last year, the Yankees got Abreu and Lidle for basically nothing at all. This year, the Brewers have to gut their pitching depth in order to get an ok relief pitcher.

[ Also there were rumors of Dye for Turnbow and a prospect. I would do that if I were melvin depending on the prospect. ]

To me that would be worse than Linebrink for Inman, Thatcher, Garrison. As much as people like to get on Turnbow's case, he's one of our better relievers, and that's an area of the team that may be severely in question this offseason.

I don't really like this, because, where does Dye fit? He's not an upgrade in right, and he can't play center. Plus, then what was the point in trading for Linebrink if they then dump on of their semi-reliable bullpen guys?

As I am not one of the regular posters who is big time knowledgable with stats, I'd like to see us get someone with an .295 or higher average... We have enough HR pop in our line-up, we need someone to get on base and continue innings, good with RISP...

I'm not sure which one of those five you suggested has the best AVG, but give me someone who can hit and slap him in the 5-7 hole and I'll be a happy camper.

Yeah...we need to quit pretending that some combination of Wise, Mench, Gross, Gwynn is really going to get us much significant. That's why Melvin had to trade those prospects to get Linebrink...more upside. I don't think there's any teams pining for a platoon outfielder or speedy bench guy at this point.

I know this has been looked at in another thread, but from what I've read the Rangers are looking to rid itself of Sosa and have found little interest. A low prospect might just be enough to twist the knife a little more in the Cubs. Can you imagine Sosa doing his goofy little hop again at Wrigley only this time in a Brewer uniform? It would kill the Cubs to see that happen.

Sosa brings nothing. His current "batting" line:

.241/.303/.451

The reason the Rangers can't get anything is because Sosa can't hit. Add to that he can't field and there is a reason no one returns the Ranger's calls.

the only ones I'd want are griffey or dunn, if the price is acceptable.

I'd like victorino, but he isn't going anywhere. dye is bad this year, and swings from the wrong side. rowand isn't that good.

This is very simple send Mench Zack Jack and another prospect any prospect except Laporta and Rottino for Dye.

Yes he had a bad first half but just last year he hit 44HR and 120RBI with 385 /.622 /.315. If he were to play anything like that we would win it all.

Weeks

Hart

Braun

Fielder

Dye

Hall

Hardy

Estrada/Miller

Jenks would still platoon between Dye and Hart we would be awesome.

I can see LaPorta, but Rottino seems to be a bit of a stretch as an untouchable player. Yeah, Vinny is the local guy, but he is blocked at just about every position he plays (except maybe catcher, but that is not his strongest position anyway). Yes, he deserves a chance, but the Brewers have no chance to get him.
