Brewers considering Jermaine Dye

Quote:
The Brewers, a team that could benefit from the addition of an experienced position player, kicked around the idea of pursuing White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye.

The problem is, the Brewers lack the young bullpen arm that the Sox are seeking. They're unwilling to part with right-handers Derrick Turnbow or Manny Parra.

Thoughts?

Dye's last 10 games

.297 AVG, 11-37, 3 HR's

OBP- .289 SLG- .443

26 BB 65 K

Also you can let him walk in the offseason and get some picks for him. I would go after him if Para isnt involved. Trade Turnbow and a prospect for him than ship off Gwynn Jr for Otsuka if hes healthy.

1. Weeks

2. Hart

3. Braun

4. Fielder

5. Dye

6. Hall

7. Hardy

8. Estrada

Set up man- Otsuka.

Eh, I'm not really all that interested. Dye's having a pretty bad year, he's not even an upgrade from Menchkins right now. I wouldn't bench Hall or Hart for him, either. He had a monster 2006, but I don't think we're likely to see a season like that out of him again, especially with him approaching his mid 30's.

Not too keen on giving up Parra or Turnbow for him, especially when the pen has been the area we can most improve.

I'll pass.

As Adam said, he's not really an upgrade from Menchkins. Plus, the ChiSox would likely not want either, and that could mess with some chemistry. And don't forget, Mr. 2nd half player--Jenkins--finally has a chance to play meaningful games in August and September. He's been in such a slump that he simply has to improve, and he's due for a hot streak

Dye

Floyd

Otsuka

For

Turnbow

Irrabean

Gwynn Jr.

and someone in AA

I'll have to assume that this is hypothetical, since Otsuka is a Ranger. Anyway, this would probably depend to me on the severity of Otsuka's injury. When healthy, I consider Otsuka to be a slight upgrade from Turnbow, but not by a lot.

I'm not thinking Gwynn has a future starting here in Milwaukee, so I wouldn't have a problem shipping him. Irrabean, either. So I guess it would depending on who the someone in AA was. Inman, no way. If it was some AA scrub, I'd probably at least take the chance, we get a chance to upgrade in the outfield if Dye comes around, and we come out slightly ahead in bullpen production.

Floyd is just a throw in. We have better arms in the minors.

It would be

Gwynn Jr for Otsuka

and

Dye and Floyd for Turnbow, Irrabaean, and a AA prospect.

If that's how it goes down, I'd rather just trade Gwynn for Otsuka and leave it at that. We then have one of the deepest pens in baseball, 2 elite setup men, and a shutdown closer.

Menchkins is around .265 with 19 HR and 66 RBI. I'm cool with that. They're fine as long as they're both not starting on the same day. We don't need Dye. He likely peaked in 2006 and is declining. I don't think he's a .229 hitter like his stats show, but I don't see him getting a lot better.

Wouldn't you think Dye would benefit in a Brewers lineup surrounded by Braun, Fielder, Hall? White Sox is one of the worst offense's in baseball. Put Dye at inbetween Braun and Fielder.

BA Rank- White Sox- 29th, Milwaukee 18th

HR- White Sox- 11th, Milwaukee 2nd

Runs- White Sox- 23rd, Milwaukee 10th

Hits- White Sox- 30th, Milwaukee 18th.

Every catagory Milwaukee's offense is better.

Weeks

Braun

Dye

Fielder

Hart

Hall

Hardy

Estrada

Or you can go

Weeks

Dye

Braun

Fielder

Hall

Hart

Hardy

Estrada

That way they wont walk Dye and have to face Braun with men on base.

I am a real big mench fan - I think he does exactly what we ask of him, but I agree that Dye would be a large upgrade over him.

The problem with Dye - I think he is definatly an every day player. Are we willing to risk what is seemingly a great clubhouse(i have heard that here and I think other places) by benching Jenkins, who is probably one of the team leaders?

Dye is an intriguing name. He has been dominant in the past and has shown small glimpses of getting out of his funk this year.

I guess I don't have much confidence in a Jenkins / Mench platoon, so I would definitely be interested in aquiring Dye.

Last year Dye was a legit MVP Candidate

.315 avg / .385 obp / 44HR / 120 RBI

This year is stat line is just putrid, but I think he is the exact type of player to target, a high risk high reward acqusition. Dye is one of the players that I think might be able to be acquired, that could possibly have a major impact.

Trade Zach Jackson, Alscadies (sp) Escobar, and a lower level high ceiling prospect for Dye. Expect very little from him, but hope for a return to form. A resurgent Dye in the 5 spot would be amazing to watch.

Thome- .288 17 HR, 56 RBI

Konerko- .261 22 HR, 61 RBI

Braun- AVG .348 HR 16 RBI 43

Fielder- AVG .285 |HR 30 RBI 74

who would you be more afraid of?

Thome has a better OPS than Fielder.

Konerko has an .868 OPS this year with back to back .900 OPS seasons the prior two years and is averaging 39 HR's the past 3 years. Braun is a rookie a great one at that but Konerko and Thome aren't slouches.

Lineup protection is vastly overrated. Dye doesn't all of a sudden suck this year because of who's hitting around him.

Having Fielder or Braun hitting behind him isn't going to be some sudden elixer that's going to solve his hitting woes.

Theres no way I replace jenkins with a guy having a bad year when were entering the part of the season when jenkins historically has dominated. Its better to just go with the guy we already have.

So Otsuka would be 1, but who is the other 1? Turnbow is bad, and is showing hints of another collapse. He has allowed almost all inherited runners to score, yet his teammates have been almost perfect in stranding his leftovers, yet his ERA is still a pedestrian 3.71.

This team needs to concentrate all its resources on a contender caliber setup man.

They're unwilling to part with right-handers Derrick Turnbow or Manny Parra

And, thus, this trade idea goes nowhere. If the Sox are only interested in major league ready relievers, the Brewers and Sox are not trading partners. If there is one thing the Brewers don't have, it is surplus relievers.

Edit:

I would probably be willing to give up Parra if I felt the player that the Brewers were getting in return would put the team over the top. I'm not sure if Dye is that player though. And, actually, Parra himself might be just what the doctor ordered - a second lefty in the pen, and he can work multiple innings.
