Brewers in on Gagne? - Final: to Boston

I'll be very angry if we give up Villanueva.

Wouldnt be very happy if we sent Parra either but it wouldnt be as bad as losing Villy.

Don't really want to give up Turnbow either since he's our leading candidate for the closer role next year.

Now that I think about it, I hope we just stand pat.

Turnbow, yes. If the Brewers have a plan for closer next year.

Villlenueva, maybe, If the Brewers can get another player back.

Parra, no. I have some manly Manny love. How essential having a LHP in the starting rotation is debatable but I am really starting to like the idea of trading Capuono in the off-season and having a rotation of Sheets, Gallardo, Suppan, Bush, Parra, next year.

more updates

SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Red Sox are leading the Yankees and Mets in a three-team race for Eric Gagne.

Newsday says it's close between the same three teams and the Brewers. The general opinion seems to be that Boston has the best offer on the table. However, that might not matter since their on Gagne's no-trade list. The Red Sox would likely have to make it worth his while for Gagne to accept a trade.

I would honestly be more apt to give Gagne the contract many had ticketed for Cordero, even with the injury history. And, like many here drool over, imagine the picks if we couldn't resign any of the three. And while it would help minimally in the regular season, it would be immensely helpful in the postseason. Wise/Villanueva in the sixth, leading to Linebrink/Turnbow in the seventh. Then, we get to witness Gagne pitch the eighth, and then giving the ball to Coco in the ninth. Then again, given the way Coco has been pitching lately, he could again become the set-up guy for Texas' closer. But no matter how you view it, we would have four "closer-quality" arms at our disposal if and when we get to the postseason.

I've been mulling this over for awhile now. While I don't think the Brewers will make a serious move for Gagne, I wonder how Texas would like a Turnbow/Gwynn combo for him. Maybe add a lesser pitching prospect as well (Derek Miller?)

As well as Parra has been throwing, I keep thinking he'll be used as trade bait one of these days, given his injury history. Kenny Williams supposedly loves him and Turnbow, but that's a different topic.

Anyways, Gagne would certainly be a welcome addition to the club, that's for sure. The bullpen, which I believe is the biggest strength of this team, would be even better with Gagne.

If a deal gets done, good, but if not, oh well. I trust Doug to make the right move.

I would not under any circumstances give up Villanueva or Parra for Gagne. I think an offer of Turnbow and Gwynn might be enough to get it done. If not I would be willing to throw in a guy like Escobar or a Zack Jackson. I think we can get this done without including any of our top prospects. Turnbow and Gwynn for Gagne would be a fantastic trade. Lets get it done. If Texas insists on either Parra or Villanueva I say no way.

This would be a great acquisition for the Brewers. I know we'd have to give up some prospects to get him, but I'd pull the trigger anyways. A strong bullpen will be what it takes to stave off the Cubs because the Crew scores enough runs and the pitchers typically hold the opposition down fo 5-6 innings, but it's absolutely imperative that we have enough bullpen arms to cover those other 3-4 innings every night. It can't always be Villanueva, Turnbow, and Cordero or their arms will fall off.

I really think the 18 games in 17 days took a toll on the bullpen, hence the struggles last week.

If they'd take Turnbow, Parra, and Gwynn or Turnbow, Villaneuva and a minor league position player I'd do it.

We have a chance and need to play for this year. The future becomes irrelevant. The future is still looking good with nothing left in the minors if we can win it all this year as free agents will be more willing to come and all the comp picks will quickly refill the minor league system. Besides we are a young team and could wait 3-4 years to re-stock the big league team.

Thats a very solid offer, and welcome aboard. Its smart to include Turnbow in the deal, because the Brewers bullpen would be overfull by adding Gagne, and teams have an unhealthy fascination with T-bow. Everyone sees his power arm and think they can fix him. If Maddux and Castro can't do it, it can't be done.

1 thing I think holds Gagnes value back a little is his contract is 3 times as much as Linebrinks. Whoever adds Gagne is increasing there payroll by $2 million. The Brewers only added about $700 K in Linebrink.

Also, I'd love to expand the deal and get C Gerald Laird, who Texas is shopping after aquiring Saltalamacchia. Laird is arguably the best throwing catcher in baseball, and had an OPS over 800 last year. He started slow at the plate this year, but has heated up recently.

Good call on Laird. We have to believe he's expendable at this point with the addition of Salty, but I believe he's a pre-arby guy, so it would be tough to pry him away. He's a good defender with a decent bat, and even has a little speed (4SB). The Rangers are suddenly loaded with catching talent (Laird, Salty, Max Ramirez from the Lofton deal, Taylor Teagarden), so maybe Laird is available. I know there's been talks about him going to the Cubs for Pie, but supposedly that was a 100% false rumor.

to throw a wrinkle in here. Since the Rangers are hot after starting pitching, why not include Bush?

Dave Bush, Zach Jackson, and Tony Gwynn for Gagne and Laird ??

CV steps into the rotation for Bush, and we keep our current bullpen intact. Like others have said, getting as many as six top picks as compensation would be a huge haul.

I really don't want to give up Parra or CV. That's parting with the now of team and guys who are somewhat proven at this level (albeit not as much so for Parra). I'd rather give up a prospect at a lower level to make this happen.

Does anyone know if the Brewers are high on Gwynn? Or do people believe he will eventually be traded?

Texas can always take Mench back...that's unlikely I know.

While I respect your opinion, I still wouldn't trade Dave Bush. He has some upside and he has been at least our second best consistent starter over the past couple months. If we did this we would weaken our rotation too much and make the bullpen stronger, which in my eyes is not a gain.

Bushy had a 3.51 ERA in June and mid 4 ERA in July all better than his 5-6 ERA performances from April and May.

ive always liked bush....just thought that ned left him in a bit to long but that is for another day... Like you said bush has been one of our better pitchers as of late and I have to agree....with sheets out hes almost looking like and ace besides gallie...I am almost happy with the SP staff to be honest when sheets get back Rather just trade soup if that was at all possible...but you can always dream right?

After reading Melvin's comments in the JS I am convinced he will make a move today. I am just steeling myself for the prospects we will be giving up - hoping that we could instead parlay Gwynn and Mench for something useful.

My out of the blue thought is that today will be the last day we see Carlos Villanueva in a Brewer uniform.

I would do Gagne for Turnbow/Gwynn in a heartbeat.

Im sure though that Gagne will head to NY or Boston.

It would be nice to have him around though if CoCo keeps struggling, and he might actually be cheaper to keep around next year then Coco. We'll see.

I'm going to assume that Milwaukee is one of the teams on Gagne's no-trade list. I don't think he would ok a trade to Milwaukee if he was going to be Cordero's set-up man.

From JSonline:

Quote:
Gagne, who can be a free agent after the season, has a limited no-trade clause in his contract. It was not clear whether the Brewers were one of the banned teams, but such clauses can be amended if contractual guarantees are made.

Lock him up and hand him the ball? I don't think so but I have a feeling there's a "huge shakeup" move coming down today....
