Cubs acquire Kevin Gregg from Florida

Recommended Posts

What did they give up for him? And old copy of Baseball America?
According to the article it is Jose Ceda. The Cubs are really getting low on prospects here. If Marmol or Wood get injured or someone else on the team starts to under perform the Cubs are not going to have anything to trade for in a mid season trade.

Gregg lead the league in blown saves last year. He blew 9 saves in just 38 opportunities, and he is not a great strikeout guy and he a guy every two innings. I don't think he is a great pick up at all especially for what they gave up to get him.

Oh, would I love to see Marmol closing for the Cubs.
Why? Because the Brewers have been so successful against him?

I think he would be a good closer and it would not be a good thing for the Brewers or the rest of the division.

Man, me too Stevo. Get him out of that flexible, higher-leverage role. That would be nice. Certainly wouldn't amount for a huge difference in expected W-L record, but any amount that makes the Cubs weaker is gravy to me.

Nope, because using your best RP as closer is not using him correctly. But I'm sure you've already encountered that on the BF forums so I won't bother trying any convincing.

JBriggs, that was my first thought, I have to wonder if Wood is moving on.

Ceda was one of the Cubs' top prospects, easily in their top five, possibly in their top 2-3. Gregg is solid, but no more than that, to give Ceda for him shows you that the Cubs thought they had a hole to fill.

Somebody's got to be on their way out, if not, the Cubs just bought a very expensive extra guy.

Gregg and Marmol is not better than Marmol and Wood. That is a step down for the Cubs in mind. That is good for us because it puts another closer in the market which means we have a good chance to get someone decent.

Like Hoffman, Wood is probably worth pursuing.
Wood was offered a multi year deal last year from the Brewers. I'm assuming that Melvin is still interested in Wood and I believe Melvin will go after Wood first before Hoffman.

The Brewers offered Wood a two-year deal before last season, and he decided to stay in Chicago for one more year. It seems like he had an "I owe it to the Cubs for sticking with me through the injuries" attitude. IIRC, his wife really likes the area, and he was intrigued by the Brewers' offer, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that he'd sign with the Crew.

I would definitely be interested in offering Kerry Wood. I know Melvin said he's going to wait on relievers until later, but I don't think Kerry Wood will be around until December/January. I'd like to see them make an attempt to go after him sooner rather than later.
