Philly celebration

I'm sure this guy is a life long Phil's fan that lives and dies with every pitch.

There is always that segment of the population that wants to find an excuse to turn what should be a fun, celebratory time into lawlessness and anarchy. Look at Madison's Halloween street party history as an example.

This is the one that stuck with me. From the Philadelphia Daily News:

At roughly the same time, just southeast of the ballpark on Darien Street, a rowdy crowd flipped over a Ford Explorer SUV that had a Tampa Bay Rays bumper sticker. A couch was set afire next to the SUV.
Talk about adding injury to insult: I mean, why? The Series is over. Why? And man, what a terrible night for someone. Your team loses the World Series and then your vehicle gets absolutely destroyed by a pack of local ding-dongs. I'd seriously probably move (after I collect the insurance).

Al's right: this would've been terrible had it been tomorrow night, or Saturday. Some of these pictures are joyous, most remind me of Bubba Helms.

And no, not "every city celebrates this way."

This thread reminds me of Wisconsin's 2000 trip to the Final Four. The Badgers beat Purdue in the regional final. The celebration in Madison was large but did not get out of hand. In West Lafayette, fans were lighting fires and causing trouble. You might say, "well, sure, Purdue lost" - but they also set furniture aflame and caused similar trouble after their Elite Eight qualifying game, when they won.

Sadly, I was more surprised that the Wisconsin celebration was so tame. We went to the middle of the night welcome-home at the stadium, which was an all-ages crowd (families with kids up to the elderly red-sweater crowd), and nothing big or bad happened.

It makes me wonder how Wisconsin fans would react nowadays to a 'big victory', or how much of a challenge it would be for us to get home following a similarly big Brewers victory - I mean like a late night, WS type victory.

Maybe they should have charged $25-30 to be on the streets of Philly...apparently, that's too high a price for the Madison ne'er do wells, as they've controlled Halloween pretty well of late.
Let's wait until Sunday and see what happens. Sure, Freakfest charges around $10 and offers entertainment, but now a student who deemed the city's party "too sterile" is promoting a Halloween block party on Mifflin Street. Seems like the kind of place a few idiots might try to cause some trouble.

Speaking of Mifflin, I remember going to a party there a while back where people were throwing beer bottles out of windows at random people, cars were turned over, dumpsters ablaze, etc. No, it was not done to celebrate a sports victory, it was pretty much for no reason. Madison is not really all that tame.

Well, the alternate Madison party has been canceled by the student organizer. I'm sure threats of hefty fines may have played a decision in calling the event off.

On a side note, I wonder what the status of State St. will be tonight, the night before the organized event.

During the 1982 World Series, after every game, Wisconsin Avenue was a crowded, drunken gathering place from Marquette to east of the Milwaukee River. Cars were backed up, partly because a lot of them were parked in the middle of the street while drivers milled around with the crowd. People drank openly in both in the vehicles and in the street. College students were giving swigs of champaign to drivers. Beers were passed between vehicles. There weren't fires, though.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

My friends and I all went down to WI avenue after the Brewers won the AL pennant in 82. We were Juniors in HS. Now, maybe I was just too naive at the time to notice it, but I recall it being very celebratory with not a whole lot of rowdyness that I could see. A lot of hand slapping and yelling. We walked west on WI Avenue all the way from Van Buren to around 40th or 50th street.

Although, I do want to say that I recall some reports of vandlism and arrests being made that were reported on the news the next day. If I'm not mistaken, I think someone may been killed after getting pinned between two cars or something like that. I still have the news papers from 82. Maybe I'll dig them out and take a look.

When UW made the Rose Bowl in 1994 there was some vandalism but no fires. I think one shop window was cracked, a police car had it's lights ripped off, and there were broken bottles and what not but nothing huge. I remember a utility van on state street that some guys started to tip but the crowd intervened and told them it was probably a dumb idea. One guy in a gorrilla suit fell out of a tree and died though....or maybe that was Halloween.

Philadelphia is a city of 1.4 million people with over another 4 million in the metro. I'n not saying "they" routinely do anything, let along start fires, but any time you get that many people together for a party (be it the night of game 5b, the day of the Parade, or New Years) somebody will do something stupid.

But because it's Philadelphia the media goes out of its way to dig up every last incident, and then people like the OP go out of their way to spread it. This is not a story.

On Halloween in 1983 someone fell off the top of what was then Brown's Book Store (now the Digital Outpost). He died from his injuries, and it may not have helped that another reveler had stolen the keys to the nearest ambulance, causing a delay in the emergency response.

I don't recall anything that serious happening when UW won that Tokyo Bowl in 1993. I do recall the celebration of the Tokyo Bowl win being bigger than the celebration when UW actually won the Rose Bowl (since the campus was cleared out for the holidays on January 1). ]

I do remember a wonderful hand-written sign in the window of the Chocolate Shoppe, back when it had a location in University Square:

CLOSED DEC 26-JAN 3

ROSE BOWEL BOUND

I still regret not having had a camera with me at that time.
