What's your internet speed?

AT&T isn't good for much in general. At least this is much better than with the Motorola modem they sent me. That thing needed to be turned off then back on every 30 min or so. The "tech guy" who finally called me after I called them 3 times (said they were too busy, had to have someone call me later, I told them when, and they never called) sounded like a 60 year-old used car salesman who knew nothing about computers. Fortunately, the old owners of the house left a pretty new 2Wire modem with integrated wireless router behind in a kitchen cabinet. I hooked that up and drastically increased my speed to the whopping figure you see here.

I just moved and am having issues with my DSL speed. I only pay for 1.5 Mb/s download speeds, and I approach that sometimes...but many times, it is waayyy below that. (.1 or .2 mb/s) I've used DSL Speed test sites to check it periodically. I would like to be able to run a test hourly for a couple of days to see what I'm really getting in terms of speed. Does anyone know of a utility that exists that will allow me to run a test each hour, and track the results? I'd like to have some data to back me up before I call my provider to complain.

I want the Internet connection that was in use when this screen capture was taken:

657MB and about a minute to go.

Has anyone ever tried the the "Maximize your PC performance with Tune up" on the speedtest.net site??

Gorman,

I've had 2 separate Charter techs tell me the stuff from Speedtest works well. They use it when someone upgrades to the 100mb service and they don't get the 100mb. After running the IP Optimizer, they say they do get the 100mb.

Thanks for the info Nottso. Anyone have any other first hand knowledge from using the Tune Up offered on the speedtest.net site?

TW's decision to start charging a rental fee for use of their previously free modem gave me motivation to whip out the dusty old Motorola SB5100. Still works like a charm on my 15Meg service, evidently.

Assuming you're using WiFi, check to see if there's a significant difference between a WiFi result and a hard wired result. One of my friends recently tested at 25MB wired and about 1MB wireless. At that point, she could safely blame the router, and a replacement router took care of the issue.

Of course, if your speedtest result is close to your provider's "promised" speed, your DSL truly does suck.

I'd whine to the company about the DSL.

The attachment shows what I get on Verizon 3G at my house (Ping: 96ms, Download: 1.26MB; Upload: .39MB). That's not nearly as cool as [a=p824693]4G[/a], but it's great for a rural area.

It's really a temptation to use the 4G instead of some WiFi connections when 4G is available. You can't do that at $10 per gigabyte, though.

just had my ISP over here to check on connections and stuff. Replaced the modem, which was dying anyways. We now have speeds in the 6 Mbps range! Wooooo, lightning fast internet again! I've forgotten what it looks like. (well, not really lightning fast but compared to what it was . . . )

Really happy with this result today. Just got the new Gen4 service installed from Hughesnet. Haven't had a speedtest result over .75 Mb/s since we bought our house in July 2011. Turns out the new Gen4 is going to be the same price each month as we had been paying before and should be about 10 times faster. Back to the days of actually being able to get something accomplished while online.

Only thing that I don't understand is why my closest server shows up as being in Wichita, KS when we live in central Wisconsin. Not sure if that is something I can change or if that has to do with the Hughesnet satellite. Any tech savvy posters have any advice for that or know if it really matters with what speeds I get?

Everything I've ever known, I've learned from Brewerfan.net....Seriously though
