Proposal: Fielder/Hall to Texas for Blalock, Davis, Salty and pitcher

RyDogg66

Texas has never been shy about trading pre-arby talent (Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Young, Edinson Volquez, etc) this trade would be part Salary dump, part restocking.

Hank Blalock (LH 3b)

Chris Davis (LH 1b)

Jarrod Saltallamachia (Switch Hitting Catcher/1b)

Pitching Prospect

For

Prince Fielder/Bill Hall

Texas is has some good young catchers in Gerald Laird and Taylor Teagarden. Our good young catchers are at least a year or two away, and it never hurts to have more, plus Salty can play some 1b.

Chris Davis has 30 HR power, Ks a lot. I dont know about his defense, but he is also liste as 3b, so I would imagine it isnt horrible.

Blalock is a salary pick up, and the reason we give them Hall.

A starting pitcher that is probably along the lines of a Dave Bush type.

1. Weeks (2b

2. Hardy (SS)

3. Braun (LF)

4. Blalock (3b)

5. Hart (RF)

6. Davis (1b)

7. Cameron (CF)

8. Salty ©

Is this lineup better than 2008? My guess is it depends on Davis. If Davis can go 550 ABs and hit 30 Hrs with an OPS around .850 he would be a push from Fielder's 2008. In 295 At bats after being called up Davis hit 17 Hrs with an OPS of .880.

This also gives us roster flexability. If Blalock gets hurt, Salty can play 1b and Davis can play 3b if needed.

The thinking is that Blalock will be brought back for only 6.25 million. How is Texas going to replace Blalock for less than 6 million, especially when teams like Milwaukee might be willing to trade for him? Blalock is similar to Cameron in that he is priced for less than market value and the risk of just one year. I doubt he is cut loose.

I think you could get a lot more value for Fielder than Davis, Saltalamacchia and a future Dave Bush. I'd also be leery about trading for one guy that can only play 1B (Davis) and a second guy who might only play first base down the road (Saltalamacchia) when we have our own guy (Gamel) who might have to be switched to first base if he doesn't make it at third, and if the outfield is full. Heck, the only thing really holding Gamel back is his defense. If you trade Fielder, maybe you just switch Gamel right away and get his bat in the lineup?

If the Brewers trade Fielder, I'd be surprised if the main guy coming back was also a first baseman. I'd also be surprised if we traded for a fix at catcher. With Salome, Lucroy, Palmisano and Fryer all likely to see time at AA and above this year, it seems unlikely to me. More likely for me, it would be a third baseman or pitcher in trade for Fielder.

As for Blalock, it's a pretty big risk to guarantee his option and hope he stays healthy and produces. Finally, Bill Hall mitigates the value of anyone else involved in the trade going from the Brewers to another team. Do we really want to lessen the value of Fielder, arguably our best trading chip? Hall is owed 15.7 mil for the next two years... we might only get a Davis and Saltalamacchia if we force the Rangers to take him.

I would love this trade personally, as I think Davis would be very close to Fielder when encompassing both offense and defense (IIRC, Davis is an average defender), and Salty would be a very valuable piece, spelling Kendall against tough righties and spelling Davis against tough lefties. Davis' ability to play some third would add t overall team versatility as well. As far as Gamel goes, this would allow him to spend all of 09 in AAA, which would be my preferred course of action. The Blalock/Hall component is icing on the cake. This deal saves us around 6-7 million in 09 depending on Fielder's arby number and as much as 15-17 million in 2010. Having said all of that, I wouldn't think Texas would like it if for no other reason than the money (no chance they add a pitching prospect imo) unless they love Fielder.

If you're intent on acquiring Blalock, then I wouldn't include Hall in the deal. Blalock isn't very good versus lefty whereas Hall is very good. They'd make one heck of a platoon. Given AT's statement, then not including Hall might net the Brewers a better deal.

The Rangers biggest need is pitching, and if the Brewers deal Fielder I'm guessing they are going to want to get a young pitcher in return, so I really have a hard time seeing why either team would make this deal. For the Rangers it would be like swapping their current 1B/DH candidates for someone else's 1B/DH candidate.

If the pitching prospect was Neftali Feliz, I'd seriously consider it... but honestly if I'm Melvin dealing Fielder I want immediate help. Neimann + Townsend coming back, or a Shields/Santana/Cain/Marcum(pre injury) type coming back.

Casey Blake won't get more than $6m and can actually play 3B. Blaylock's big issues are that he should be platooned and there are serious questions about his glove at 3B after his injuries.
What? Blake will surely get more than a 1 year deal for $6M. He OPSed over .800 twice in the past three seasons, and has been about a .345 OBPer. He should be in line for a pretty nice payday, in fact.

I'd like to get starting pitching as well, but if this deal came up I'd take it and look to deal with pitching via another avenue.....with the money saved here a pitching coming back wouldn't need to be pre-arb (although that is obviously preferred). Feliz is a pipe dream (I know you didn't say you thought they could get him). They probably wouldn't trade him straight up for Fielder. He may have the highest upside of any minor league pitcher.

Seems awful "forced" to me. Also, if you're going to trade Prince, I see at least one "name" player coming back in return.

I literally made it up in 5 seconds, but Prince for Cano, Cabrera, and Hughes makes as much sense to me as any other deal. It might need some balance, but overall, it seems close.

The Yankees wouldn't give up that much talent for Johan Santana, no way they are giving that up for Fielder.

The bloom is significantly off of Cano, Cabrera and Hughes. I think the Yankees would pull the trigger on that trade.

I would not be happy. Hughes is starting to look like all hype - and his Arizona Winter League production matches. Cano was bad this past season. And Cabrera is just a guy.

It's only one year. The Yankees aren't going to trade away players they don't have replacements for in their system. There's no need to trade for Fielder when Texeira is on the market. The Yankees would be better off bring Giambi back than trading away 3 players for Fielder.

I love that tag line. Melky Cabrera, just a guy.

He was always just a guy. But since he played for the Yankees, he had to be billed as FUTURE STAR. Check his minor league and major league numbers. He's Corey Paterson without the speed or power.

Rangers fan here, we've made some bad trades in the past, but there's no way they make that kind of trade.

1. Davis has big time power to all parts of the field and his raw power is comparable to that of Josh Hamilton; saying he's got 30 HR power is selling him short. The thing that will most define his MLB career is his pitch selection. As it is, he's already pretty good.

2. The Rangers are very likely to pick up Blalock's option and let him play DH/1B. $6.25 million is a small risk for someone with Blalock's talent, there's no reason to trade him, just to trade him. The upside to picking up is option is fairly high, If he can stay healthy and put up big numbers, he will have more value than just a throw in player. If not, it doesn't really matter, as he's only making $6.25 million.

3. Why would the Rangers want Bill Hall?

4. With Justin Smoak down in the farm system, who should be ready by 2010, why would the Rangers trade all that for another 1B? Why trade for a 1B that may not even be a substantial upgrade over one of the players they're trading to get him in the first place?

5. If that group of players end up getting traded in a package like you presented, it won't be for a 1B, it will be for starting pitching.
