Buy low on any Dodgers?

Recommended Posts

If not for the Casey Blake trade, I would have opined that R-Mart would be an ideal target this offseason. However, there is no one who can replace him now, and by all accounts, his untouchability is on par with Billz/Kemp/Kershaw. Thus, I'll throw it out there again. What about Takashi Saito? Is he going back to Japan? If we were to bring in Bobby Valentine, like many prognosticators have theorized, Takashi would probably be more amenable to playing another year or two, even given his age. Also, if Cappy is still with us next year, I remember he and Tomo Ohka would practice Japanese.

I don't think McDonald is going anywhere. I remember catching one of the games during the NLCS and they mentioned that the Dodgers would have gotten CC Sabathia in July if they had given up McDonald -- owner Frank McCourt stepped in and refused to let Colletti trade him, and he was pretty good out of their bullpen in the playoffs this year. The Dodgers may never let their prospects actually play, but they don't seem to like giving up on them, either. Colletti's just a weird guy to figure out (other than the fact that he apparently loves giving bad contracts to outfielders who can't hit).

Before the Manny trade, I wouldn't have minded taking a chance on Andy LaRoche, but that opportunity is gone. DeWitt just seems like a "meh" guy to me -- you don't mind having him around, but he's not the kind of guy you'd want to give up anything substantial for in a trade.

I really don't think the Dodgers make good trade partners. They have an insane amount of contracts that are expiring (I thought I saw 11 FA's, but that could be wrong), and most of the contracts they do have coming back are bad ones of the Pierre and Jones type. I think they're more likely to solve their problems on the FA market rather than through trades, at least early on.

I don't know why no one EVER looks at Juan Pierre as an option in CF and as a leadoff man for the short-term. He's lost in a crowded outfield in LA, has the speed and (most of all) contact we've been looking for and can obviously still get to balls in CF. The only knock on his is that his arm is horrible. He could also be obtained at a premium as I believe he was under contract and I don't think the Dodgers would hesitate to send him packing to free up ANY of that salary.

The guy walks, gets on base, and scores runs.....

Pierre has been brought up here as a possibility for a CF. He's certainly available if a team wants him. The problem is, he doesn't even get on base anymore. His last 4 years his OBP has been below average, even considering park and league effects. Combine that with his lack of power, he is close to replacement level offensively, if not below it. He's under contract for 3 more years, at $28.5M. He should not be an option for CF for the Brewers. They should be able to get better production, and much better value, from a 4A player somewhere at minimum cost. The Brewers would be better off playing Gwynn every day than spending that much money on Pierre.
