I'm so excited right now. I was at the 2006 NCAA title game when I was a senior in HS getting ready to go to the UW in the fall, and now as a senior at the UW they're back in the Frozen Four. I wish I could be there, but stupid school gets in the way! I watched the RIT/UNH game earlier, and RIT looks good, but I think the UW can handle them, no problem. Here's hoping a 7th national championship being only 14 days away.

That horribly weak goal that Gudmandson let in to make it 4-3 nearly made me throw my remote at the TV. If St. Cloud had come back to tie it and win in OT, i don't think i'd have been able to sleep tonight. We really outplayed St. Cloud by a significant margin, yet it was only a one goal game with 2 minutes left. The same was the case yesterday, neither game should have been still in doubt with 2 minutes left. Gudmandson is a decent goalie, but far from special and he's my biggest concern about possibly winning the national championship.

BTW, i thought the refs were horrible tonight against both teams. It's tournament time, not some relatively non-important regular season game and i thought there were multiple very ticky tack slashing/interference calls that simply could have been let go. Let the players decide games and not turn them into a special teams fest. Plus, i understand the NCAA wants to protect the kids, but i think they've gone overboard and thus it's taken away to much of the physical play from the college game. Pretty much any really hard check where a player gets knocked down to the ice gets called a penalty even if it was a legal check. If there is a check anywhere near the boards and a player goes to the ice, it's not even a pretty much likely to be called deal, it's a lock to be called regardless if it wasn't in the back and a legit boarding call.

Was at the game tonight. Weak refereeing. Missed some easy calls. Made up others. Thankfully it didn't hurt us (and I don't think it hurt SCSU). The better team won. Looked like St Cloud had heavy legs due to the 2OT game on Friday.

Also, the SCSU fans I say by (until they moved) were pretty whiny and not all that knowledgeable. Badger fans loud and great travel by the student section.

Agreed on the third goal he gave up. I heard it hit off the pipe and then I heard a bunch of cheering and finally the referee pointing in the goal. I couldn't believe it. That's the first thing they teach you as a goalie, seal the post and he didn't. I was waiting for the replay just hoping that the puck didn't completely cross the line, but it easily did.

Agree about the refs as well. My God, it's a hockey game, not an ice dancing competition. Guys are going to get hit, it's part of the game, you don't have to call basically every little thing. What's up with all of these "hits to the head"? The Badgers were called for at least two this weekend, neither were actually hits to the head and even though the coverage of Badger hockey in Milwaukee sucks, I didn't see one of those calls this season either against the Badgers or any team they played until this weekend. Those refs were garbage and they better not be anywhere near the Frozen Four.

Frozen Four......that sure sounds good. Many of us have said all year how good this team really is, and to see them step it up was awesome. RIT will be a tough match-up, as they are playing about as well as anyone.....but if UW plays like they did this weekend, they will be fine.

Well played, UW. I was really hoping for a late momentum shift after that SH goal and penalty kill, but Mitchell's goal wiped that away. I'd love to see a Wisconsin-Miami final, assuming the Ofohios win tonight.

Yea that would be kinda cool, the Smith brothers playing each other for a national championship. Would be rough on the parents though.

Miami wins with a goal 1:54 seconds into the second OT. That's too bad, i'd much rather the Badgers face Michigan in the title game.

The Frozen Four is in Detroit. That could have been a tough atmosphere.

I realize that, but i still think it would have been easier, overall.

We have a finalist for the Hobey Baker award this year. Blake Geoffrion made it, Brendan Smith didn't make the cut.

Blake

Geoffrion

-- The senior forward from Wisconsin is a native of

Brentwood, Tenn., and is the grandson of Hall of Famer Bernie "Boom

Boom" Geoffrion and the great-grandson of another Hall of Famer, Howie Morenz.

His father, Danny, also played in the NHL.

Geoffrion, a 2006

second-round pick of the Nashville Predators, was a Wisconsin captain and was

named MVP of the West Regional last weekend. His 27 goals and 21

assists in 38 games rank second in the nation in goals and tied for

first in the country with 14 power-play goals. Finishing second in the

WCHA scoring race and topping the conference in goals and power play

goals, he was selected as a First-Team all-star.

Geoffrion, a consumer science major, also spends time off the ice

visiting UW Children's Hospital, has mentored a cancer patient, and is a

peer leader lending assistance to UW students.

We also have INCH defenseman of the year. For whatever that's worth.

In fact, the junior’s offensive numbers — Smith led the nation’s

blueliners in goals (15), assists (32), and points (47) — are the most

by a defenseman since Denver’s Matt Carle put up 53 points in his Hobey

Baker-winning season of 2005-06.

Unlike Carle, Smith won’t win the Hobey Baker Award — he was one of the

10 semifinalists for the honor but was not among the three finalists —

but he was the obvious choice as Inside College Hockey Defenseman of the

Year.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Non-hockey fans really didnt realize how talented UW was this season. They are loaded with first and second round NHL draft picks. Seven of the Eight defensemen on the team are already drafted in the first two rounds. But its not all D - This team is second in the nation in scoring and is very fun to watch. This team has gotten two games from the ultimate goal.

Geoffrion plays against the best competition of the three finalists, is one of the top face-off guys in the NCAA, and plays on all teams (top line, power-play, penalty kill). The two guys he is going against are both scorers ( one led the nation in scoring overall, the other in goals) but definately dont compare to what Geoffrion means to UW. USCHO.com has a great game-by-game break down of each player's scoring this season. The other two feasted on weak opponenents...... Thats the Badger fan in me talking, but you can investigate for yourself.

Blake also helped his cause by scoring 6 points so far this post-season.

UW has never had a Hobey winner.......and with guys like Eaves, Johnson, Heatley, Elliot, they definatly should have already had one. Is this the year?

Geoffrion is certainly very worthy, but i think Smith should win the Hobey. When you look at the amount of points he has as a defenseman compared to others in college hockey and his vast improvement at playing defense outside of scoring, i think he should have won the award fairly easily.

Smith has 45 points on the season and last year defenseman Matt Gilroy won the Hobey while only scoring 37 points. Smith finished 19th in the whole country in scoring, no other defenseman finished even in the top 50.
