Badger Hockey

logan82

Just a note to everyone that Tuesday evening the UW women's team hosts the US Olympic Team. The Olympic team has five or so former UW players on the roster. A slight tangent from discussions regarding the men's team, but this is the Badger Hocker thread. I'm intrigued enough to make the drive in from Waukesha.

The Badgers will be practicing outside at Elver Park today (Tues. 1/5) from Noon-1PM to get a feel for playing outside in preparation for their upcoming outdoor game.

This was very cool to watch. Glad I made the trip over at lunch.

If you live in Madison and have Charter, channel 87 tends to pick up a lot of the away games lately. Not really sure what that station is normally, but they always have WCHA hockey on......Last weekend they had the st. cloud student broadcast.

#3 in the nation.....now we get tested over the next two weeks. Go Bucky!

Don't go posting stuff like that over in the Bucks thread. They get really upset.

Yeah, because posting that in the Bucks thread would really do a lot of good. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif

Oh well, road split this weekend. Badgers fell behind 4-1 early and lost 6-5 Saturday night.

We would probably have a good idea if the game was actually on TV. I am not sure we have had a really good goaltender in Wisconsin for a while. I usually give credit for goals allowed to the defense.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Agree with the Brian Elliott comment. He was a very good college goalie. Our two right now are not that good.

Some stats to chew on this week....

According to USCHO.com, in the national statistics for all D-1 goaltenders, Bennet currently ranks # 13 ( 2.16 goals per game) and Gudmanson ranks #15 (2.17 goals per game). So from that standpoint, they are pretty darn good, since there are roughly 200 goalies in the nation. I know that the radio guys have been pretty harsh on our defenders, who tend to take major risks and leave our goalie hanging a lot....We have a lot of offensive minded defensmen.......i.e. Goody gave up a goal where he was behind the net, gave it to a defender who immidiatly tried to pass in front, where it was stolen and knocked into an open net....mistakes happen a lot this season.

But they do have their flaws too.....Bennett comes out of the net a ton, both are really bad when they are bad. Goody can be beat by quicker teams who pepper the net with shots. These are things that can be fixed, and luckily, the Badgers are the top scoring team in the nation at over 4 goals per game. So we can bail our guys out in a high scoring game.

A little more perspective on how our goalies stack up in the WCHA, Goody is #1 in conference games (2.03 gpg) while Bennett is #4 (2.21 gpg). They are both pretty good in the WCHA!

Go Bucky!

Bennett drives me nuts with the amount of time he spends out of the net.

Eaves had said that after the break he would be more willing to go with one guy over the other and Gudmandson had such a great night Friday it seemed like a good idea - and then Saturday happened.

The thing about the stats, though, is that each guy has played half as much as all the other goalies in the country.

I met Gudy at an event a few years ago and really would like to see him succeed - but this spotty play just can't keep happening.

To call Elliot a good keeper is to do him a disservice. He was a finalist for and really could have won the Hoby our championship year. He was Spectacular. He made great decisions, had a quick glove and had the faith of the players in front of him, which is something that's lacking now. While some of the blame falls on the defenders, I feel like their play is spotty because they aren't comfortable with the guy between the pipes.
