PFielder for Mora/Sherrill/Roberts

According to MLBTradeRumors.com this is in the air... Brian Roberts, George Sherrill, and Melvin Mora would add depth for the Brewers, and Roberts gets you two draft picks if he leaves after the season.

I personally don't like trading Prince for something that does not involve a top 25 prospect coming back in return...or even trading him this year at all...

If Billy Hall was added then that would be something...RWeeks could then pack his bags for Chicago (White Sox).

Thoughts?

Only if the Orioles would take Suppan instead of Hall. That is a pretty weak trade for Fielder the Yankees could offer more with just a Cano and Kennedy/Hughes trade for Fielder. At least the Brewers could flip Cano then to the Dodgers for Kemp or Ethier.

I don't like this deal at all, if Fielder is being moved, it better be for a stud starting pitcher. Baltimore has no one in their starting rotation that I'd be interested in. I like some of their minor league pitchers, but it would take 2 of them to get Prince from me if I was the GM.

I'm on the fence with this one. I guess, for me, it depends on who we would get to fill firstbase. I think the upgrades at second and third are substantial and Sherrill is a nice piece for the bullpen, but Prince's production is pretty tough to fill. I think I'd go for it if we can add someone like Blalock to replace Prince. Then you're basically swapping out Prince, Weeks and Hall for Blalock, Roberts and Mora and adding Sherrill to the pen:

That trade idea was just speculation from the guy that writes mlbtraderumors, not a real deal that had a link to it. http://www.mlbtraderumors...e-could-pri.html#comments

He speculated on a bunch of places that Prince could go and if you read through all of the comments a lot of the posters think the crew are going to make this trade with the A's to get a bunch of B,C level prospects along with Eveland because I don't think any of them realize we traded him away to begin with.

It is pretty funny reading as most of the posters don't think that Prince is worth anything near Hughes, Cain, Greinke. This is my favorite quote

"If he is traded to the Giants it will be for John Sanchez and others. Not Matt Cain. I think I will believe Peter Gammons over anyone else, and he said that it was Cain for Fielder, Hardy and a MNR LGR. Meaning that if the Giants trade Sanchez and others, they should be able to get Fielder. If he doesn't go to the jints then he won't be traded."

3 guaranteed years of Fielder for 1 guaranteed year of Roberts, a declining, over-the-hill mediocre 3B in Mora, and an average relief pitcher. I realize this is just speculation, but this proposal seems almost laughable.

Mora wasn't over the hill nor mediocre in 2008. He had more RBI's per AB than any Brewer regular including Fielder and Braun. He also tied Braun at .285 which led the Brewer regulars. His OBP has been steady at just over .340 for 4 straight seasons or roughly equal to Hardy and Weeks who were behind only Fielder on the Brewers. He's been very solid defensively his entire career. Plus he's got an option for 2010 so you could get 2 years out of him, not one. The one concern is health. He's had some issues that have limited him the last 2 years, but he did play in around 130 games this year. And he doesn't strike out nearly as often as most of the Brewers.

I might add Mora did all this playing in the AL East which boasted 3 of the top 4 pitching staffs in the AL (Toronto, Tampa Bay, Boston).

As for Sherrill being "average", I also beg to differ. Sherrill saved a respectable 31 of 37, and though his ERA and WHIP were up from lights out numbers in 07, he still fanned more than a hitter per inning and allowed fewer hits than innings. Plus he's just now entering arby and the Brewers would have control for 3 years.

I won't even go into Roberts. He's a top leadoff hitter, and even one year is worth it.

I like this deal a lot. They get proven talent upgrades in 3 needed spots and it costs them in one spot. They don't need prospects. They have those and they'll have more after next year's draft It also frees them up do more deals with their current infielders for pitching, CF, and or 1B help. It could mean Gamel gets a shot at 1B. They'd definitely need to find one other lefthanded bat even if Gamel claims the 1B job but they'd have the pieces to do just that.

You'd only be getting Roberts and Mora for a year each and adding $17 million to the payroll, not counting what Sherrill will get in arbitration. Mora did bounce back and have a fine season after three seasons in decline. But this year's numbers were the result of a torrid 2nd half where he played in only 48 games and hit .376/.417/.656. His first half, when he was playing everyday, he hit .233/.301/.387 and complained to the media about criticism.

I wouldn't be opposed to adding him to the team as a stopgap until Gamel was ready, if the O's agreed to eat some of his $9 million salary. But I would never trade a star like Fielder if all I could get was these 3. Your offering one of the best power hitters in baseball for Brian Shouse and two guys who are going to be free agents a year from now. Orioles would do it a minute. Melvin would get fired.

Sherrill is not Brian Shouse Joe and didn't you forget to subtract the $8 million or so Fielder will get in arbitration?

I don't understand your point about Mora's torrid 2nd half. He played everyday virtually through August and he arguably was the best hitter in baseball in the month of August hitting .418/.455/.765 with 32 RBI. If your point is he was getting more rest the 2nd half, the facts don't back that up. He missed games in September because of nagging injuries. If your point was he got hot after the O's were out of it, the O's were out of it from day 1.

I am saying his fine season stats are based 212 plate appearances in July and August. Had he been healthy in September perhaps he would have continued to play well. He missed 27 games this year and 36 in 2007. That's not horrible for a guy his age; on the other hand, given his age we can't be sure he won't break down more and we don't know which hitter we'd be getting; the July /August guy or the April-June guy.

Your point about Prince's arby numbers is well taken. I just think this wouldn't be the best trade for the Brewers. Now maybe a Nelson + Weeks or Hart + minor leaguer to the Orioles would be something I could get behind. I'd like to see what it would take to get Jeremy Guthrie.

If I trade Prince Fielder to the Orioles, I would want Aubrey Huff as part of the deal. He had a gigantic 2008, but like Roberts and Mora, he only has a year left on his contract. He makes $8 mil, but if they'd take Bill Hall, it would even things out.

The flip side to any deal that takes on salary is those are dollars we won't be able to throw at CC or another pitcher. If they do take on money in a trade before CC signs anywhere, you have to think that means they're out of that race.

I don't see Roberts as enough of an upgrade over Weeks. Mora is old and injury prone. Yes, he's a better 3B than what they have now, and that'd be great if he were a free agent. Sherill is a nice reliever. Prince is an all-star who has 3 years left before free agency. That's a very weak package for a young power hitter, as those rarely are dealt at all. After '09, they'd have Sherill and some draft picks.

Prince is worth a lot more than Sexson was. If a trade is made, names like Phil Hughes will be mentioned, not guys a decade older than Fielder.

Mora will be 37 next season and Sherrill and Roberts will be 31. Roberts would be a very nice addition, but 1 year of Roberts does not equal 3 of Fielder. Mora had a fine season in 2008, posted a 798 OPS with good defense. At his age and his contract status, he's nothing more than a stop gap. Sherrill is an average reliever. He had one good month, two average months, and six bad months in 2008. While not the best stat, his ERA vs. righties was 4.89, not terrible, but not great and could be an indication of a growing ineffectiveness versus righties. He had decent success as a closer, so he's going to make more than he's worth in arbitration. I'd take Riske, Torres, and Villanueva over him.

I guess I just question why you'd trade the cornerstone of a franchise for a past-his-prime stop gap 3B, an average reliever who is probably about to become overpaid, and 1 year of a top leadoff man. It just doesn't make sense to me. If I were to deal a guy like Fielder, I'd be looking for young, inexpensive major league talent that would be part of the long term picture.

I don't think they trade Prince this offseason, but if they do, a nice starting point would be Rob Cano and Phil Hughes. One very good young player (had a bad 1st half of '08), and one of the best SP prospects in the game, still just 22.

Melky Cabrera would be a nice throw in, as he has really fallen off his earlier numbers, but is still just 23 and a good defender.

Thank you Al. If I'm trading a 24-year-old Fielder, the discussion begins with two stud pitchers and a good LH bat who plays good defense at a position of need, all three 27 or younger.

You know who would love that trade proposal? Us Cubs fans. Bye bye Fielder. Seriously, Sherill strikes me as one of those 1 year wonder type closers *coupfdankolb* *couphderrickturnbow*. Melvin Mora is well into decline mode. Brian Roberts is the only one of those guys worth anything, and you could probably have him in a deal revolving around Ricky Weeks or Bill Hall, and still have Fielder as a trading chip for a front of the rotation type pitcher.

Each of the 3 Orioles solves a pressing need for us. I'd take this deal straight up. Prince's value is dropping almost as fast as his waistline is growing. This trade improves our infield defense big time. Defense wins games gang.

And so does pitching and hitting. Your missing 2/3rd of the equation. Prince's value is not dropping maybe if you were expecting another 50 HR season. But why would you be expecting that? Losing Prince is losing a lot of the offense for the Brewers and adding the players above is not going to replace what we get for Prince.

Perhaps it is wrong of me but I do have an expectation of low to mid 40's in his HR dept (with one being an obligatory inside-the-park jog). That's the type of deal that turns the Orioles into an AL East power (Wieters-Pacman Jones-Markakis....Fielder). You know Angelos would salivate, but you should be able to get a lot more for such a young slugger. I still say we sign him long term (as in a year or two past his FA date, but the devil probably won't sign off on it), because much of our ability to compete in the near future depends upon his presence in our lineup. If not for Corey Hart protecting Prince for most of the year, he would probably have the expected low 40's HR total. Instead, he began to expand the strike zone in an attempt to do too much. How did Braun do when he was protected by Corey? I seriously hope we don't trade him, but if we do, I seriously hope we get more than the remnants of last winter's trade efforts, both those hypothesized and realized, sans the meat (Pacman would look very nice in right, but still no deal).
