While no one may have taken Rogers, I presume it was a money issue. The Brewers may be saying "Hey, we dropped over 2 mil on this guy. We don't want to lose him for $50K." Because they didn't need the 40 man spot for anyone else, it' more of a 'protect your investment' deal, in my mind.

That's my take on it as well. If they felt they had the open roster spot, may as well protect him on the off chance he'll amount to something. You don't really lose much except for the ability to grab another waiver wire guy. I'm glad they protected him and I'm sure if he gets injured again they won't keep him on the 40 man next year. Might as well give him one more chance.

One thing to remember is that the scouting director (Jack Z) that selected Rogers with the 5th pick of the draft is now the GM of a team in complete re-build mode. The Mariners would have no problem hiding Rogers on there roster, they "hid" Carlos Silva in the middle of their starting rotation last year.

Also, 2 members of that scouting staff are now working as scouting directors for other teams, so theres enough people out there who know Rogers well. With his upside, I think he would have been 1 of the top 10 picks in the rule 5 draft.

I'm still not sure how likely it was that a team would've taken Rogers, but all X's points above make enough sense to use a 40 man spot on him.

There has been a lot of talk about physical talent, but what hasn't been mentioned is Roger's makeup. From all things I've read/heard, he appears to be very mature and have a great work ethic and a trust in the organization. Those characteristics - coupled with the + FB/Slider combo - would make him more likely to be taken. You wouldn't have to worry as much about babysitting him or how he might influence the rest of your locker room. That would seem to figure into any Rule V situation, IMO

Pure stuff and polish for his age, much like why Rogers was protected I'd imagine (stuff not polish)

These are good points X. I think the real question is how healthy he is. I'm assuming (haven't seen anything real concrete) that things are going well. Will he be ready for opening day? May? If he's not going to be ready to pitch until July or August I think it's a bit more difficult to 'hide' him. If he's ready opening day or soon after, I could see the Mariners taking a chance on him. I think it's still difficult to 'hide' a player that has only played at low levels and hasn't pitched in awhile. Jack Z would have some knowledge though of his development.
