Arizona Fall League - season over - Brewer, Palmisano & Welch finish strong

colbyjack
azcheesehead, can you give a mini-scout report on Wright? I haven't heard much about him.

How hard does he throw? What pitches does he throw? SO, GB, or FB pitcher?

Well, you need to consider that I have only seen him throw to 3 batters, all of which he struck out. So to answer your question, based off the small sample, I would say he is a SO pitcher. Whether that is actually the case, I don't know. He was throwing a fastball that I would guess based off eyesight in about the low 90s. His breaking stuff was breaking pretty hard up and down. He definitely jammed a couple of hitters in on the hands and mixed his pitches in and out pretty well too. Like I stated earlier, it was a VERY small sample, but I liked what I saw out of Brae. On a side note, he is a really nice guy. I asked him for an auto on a ball and he took about 30 seconds to sign it, making sure it turned out very nice. Go Brewers!

The Fall League parks generally don't have operating radar guns, so it'll be hard for azcheesehead to tell. I was shocked seeing the Mets' Brian Stokes throwing 98 in those Sept games, as I remember him as the undrafted college player throwing 87 and grinding out games, usually following Jamie Shields to the hill.

I may try to get to a game sometime. I'd love to see Salome and Green. As for Palmisano, there is a procedure that includes filling in on other teams. I think that when a player leaves the league, he is replaced by someone from the same organization. If the organization declines, another organization comprising that AFL squad can send a replacement. If they decline, then another player can be shuffled from a different AFL squad. Normally it doesn't happen till the last week of the season.

Taylor Green is going to be the ghost of Cleveland trade past... Dude is going to explode over the next two years.

I'm a little drunk at the moment (on alcohol, and man my crush on Taylor), but I'm calling 20 HRs in Huntsville next year. He is next year's Mat Gamel, but can actually stick at the hot corner. From all accounts he is THE player that the Brewers, and any team for that matter, should be looking for, a hard worker who gets by on his limited talent, but keeps working hard enough to turn that low cieling into something that could eventually become great.

Keep it up Mr. Green. And an advanced welcome to Milwaukee.

I opened up the Gameday feature for the final 4-5 innings of this game given the lack of sporting events for the evening. While you don't get a feel for the game itself, Alexandre Periard worked very quickly gunning down the order, striking out the side. He did give up a single and a stolen base amidst his fast work.

Lorenzo Cain was the story of the night though, going 3-4 with a run scored, a double, a stolen base and a HBP.

Taylor Green went 1-4 with a walk and 2 strikeouts (one looking in the 9th), and Lou Palmisano went 0-2 with a K.

Per Bill Mitchell, BA's AFL correspondent:

Lorenzo Cain (Brewers) made possibly the best catch of the fall in the Friday night game between the Scorpions and Javelinas at Scottsdale Stadium. The Javelina leftfielder ranged deep into the left field corner to make a running catch of a foul fly off the bat of left-handed hitting Ben Copeland (Giants). Cain's defensive gem was the topic of conversation the next morning on the bench of the Brewers' instructional league team before their final game of the year.

Well, we know the Brewers instructional camp is over, wrapping up last Tuesday the 14th. We usually don't hear much about the players in attendance, but the past couple of years we have heard a couple of tidbits about the players that stood out the most. I'm guessing if Cody Scarpetta got bumped up to the HWB as Mass noted on the HWB thread, that he continued to impress.

So far, no Brewers have made an appearance in today's Peoria/Peoria matchup, which is scoreless in the fifth.

EDIT: David Welch makes the lone Brewers appearance today in Arizona, tossing 1.1 innings giving up 1 hit and 1 ER. He retired 4 straight batters before giving up a 2-run double in the 7th. He was taken out of the game after that point, but that runner still ended up scoring, thus the earned run.

In today's game...

Lorenzo Cain, still playing LF, went 2-6 with a HR, 2 RBIs and a run scored. OPS is at 1.140 over 18 at bats.

Taylor Green, playing 3B, went 1-2 with an RBI, run scored and HBP. After he was hit by the pitch, he was removed for a pinch runner. Let's hope he's ok. Agent39? Taylor's OPS is at 990 after 24 AB.

Omar Aguilar pitched an inning and a third allowing a hit, and he struck out a dude. ERA is still at 0.00 after 4.1 IP.

Jeremy Jeffress had a forgettable day as he did not make it out of the first inning. In 2/3 of an inning, he allowed 6 runs, all earned, on 3 hits (including a HR), 2 walks and a HBP. Jeremy's ERA stands at 12.86 after 7 innings of work.

It turns out Green was hit in the face by a pitch which broke his nose, per his AFL blog:

Hi, Taylor regrets to inform you that he has been hit in the face with a pitch in this afternoon's game and has broken his nose. He will continue writing next week, thanks. He apologizes for the inconvience.

Hopefully agent39 will pass along our best wishes to Green, as we hope he's alright.

The Javelinas exploded for 16 runs today, with Lou Palmisano being the only Brewers hitter to be a part of the fun today. He went 1-4 with a 2-run double in the 4th inning, a run scored and a pair of walks.

Alexandre Periard and Brae Wright pitched well today, and neither allowed a run or a hit. Periard went 1.1 innings in relief of starter Wade Townsend, striking out a batter, while Wright pitched the 7th, striking out a pair. 11 of Periard's 13 pitches went for strikes; 7 of Wright's 8 pitches found the zone, as neither has given up an earned run so far this fall. Periard did a particularly good job getting out of a jam with 2 inherited runners aboard in the 4th.

Periard so far: 4 games, 5.1 IP, 3 H, 7 K, 3 BB, 0.00 ERA

Wright so far: 5 games, 5.1 IP, 2 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA

According to this AFL update, the reason Jeffress only went 2/3 of an inning yesterday was because of "shoulder fatigue" - his fastball was in the low 90's, not the upper 90's, so they took him out. A decision will be made on his AFL status in about a week. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see him shut down. No sense in pushing things this late in the season.

The same article notes that Green's injury isn't that severe (about as mundane as getting hit in the cheek can be, I guess) and he might be back in the next few days.

Where can I find the splits for dudes/non-dudes? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Cute Avatar, BTW.

Anyone know what Wright projects to be in the majors? Starter or Reliever? I ask because it seems that he is relieving more in the AFL.

"With two outs in the bottom of the third, Milwaukee third base prospect Taylor Green took a pitch from Cards hurler Tyler Norrick that caught a piece of his helmet and face, causing a minimally displaced fracture of his nose."

Does anyone else think the Cardinals front office told that pitcher to drill Green?

I wouldn't put it past those dirt bags.

Max Scherzer and the Phoenix team really stuck it to the Javelinas today, 13-1. Unfortunately there was a Brewers pitcher involved in this mess, David Welch, who went 1.2 innings giving up 5 hits and a walk while giving up 4 earned runs.

Tomorrow night is the league's all-star game. With Green and Jeffress out, I don't think we'll be seeing any other Brewers farmhand in attendance, but you never know. I haven't seen an official league release for this contest, so unless someone beats me to it, we may just have to wait until tomorrow to find out.

The Javelinas got their butts handed to them tonight, 15-4, and the Brewers that were part of this game did not fare well.

Palmisano was 0-1 with a K. Cain was 0-4. Periard walked 3 and gave up a pair of runs in an inning of work. Wright did alright, walking 2 and giving up 2 hits and 1 ER (a solo HR) in 2 innings of work.

The league is off tomorrow.

Oh, I seem to remember a time when we did not even have a prospect worth sending for years in a row. There were some mighy lean years during the Sal Bando era. It would be nice if they were all great here recently, but it is what it is. They'll be fine.

No Brewers saw playing time in today's AFL game.

And while I agree with Boy Jeenius that there were much leaner years, I also agree with twobrewers that this has been a stinker of a year to follow the fall/winter leagues. Of course we've been spoiled in recent years, particularly last year given Gamel's success in the HWB and LaPorta's in the AFL.

Heck, it's hard to find anything encouraging from the Caribbean leagues.
