Arizona Fall League - season over - Brewer, Palmisano & Welch finish strong

colbyjack

The AFL doesn't start until Tuesday, October 7th, but I wanted to start this thread to place the rosters courtesy of MLB.com. We've already heard that there may be a few names moving around, as agent39 noted that Taylor Green could replace Mat Gamel and how Michael Brantley's name is still absent from this list (and of course we're still waiting to hear the offical word on the PTBNL in the Sabathia trade).

Stephen Kahn, a RHP that the Brewers drafted in 2002 but who went unsigned out of high school and attended Loyola Marymount before being drafted in the fifth round of the 2005 draft by the Mariners, is also on the Peoria Javelinas roster.

Cain and Green officially replacing Brantley and Gamel in the AFL, according to brewers.com

From the article:

"Brantley was supposed to represent the Brewers in the Arizona Fall League, but now Lorenzo Cain will go. Green will also be there as a replacement for injured third-base prospect Mat Gamel (right elbow), Melvin said."

The AFL kicked off yesterday, and only one Brewers farmhand made it into the game for the Peoria Javelinas, Omar Aguilar, who pitched a scoreless 9th inning allowing one hit. It took him 14 pitches and 3 flyball outs, otherwise, there isn't much else to report after the first day.

The Javelinas take on the Surprise Rafters again today at 1:35 CST.

I don't know if they had this last year, but I think 2 years ago they had several AZ Fall League games on MLB Radio online. Pat Sejak was the announcer for some of them. Yes, that Pat Sejak. Anyone know if they plan on doing any online broadcasts this year?

Jeremy Jeffress got the start in yesterday's game for the Javelinas, and pitched very well over three innings, allowing only 2 hits, 1 ER and 1 BB while striking out 4. He threw 39 strikes out of 58 pitches, and had a 4:1 groundout to flyout ratio (hey, it's the offseason, and these splits are all we have http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif). He did commit an error.

Alexandre Periard tossed the 5th and 6th innings and didn't allow a run despite allowing a hit and a pair of walks while striking out a pair.

Taylor Green got the start at 3b and went 2-4 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.

Game Log:

The only run Jeffress gave up came in the 1st inning with 2 outs. He struck out the side (all swinging) in the 2nd (amidst his fielding error), striking out two very promising young players in Josh Donaldson and Adrian Cardenas.

Brae Wright made his second AFL appearance last night, tossing an inning and giving up a hit and 2 walks with one strikeout, and yet he managed to get out of his inning of work without giving up a run (he did so by striking out first round draft pick Gordon Beckham with the bases loaded).

Omar Aguilar worked the 9th inning and gave up a hit and a walk, but like Wright, managed to squeak out of the inning without any runs crossing the plate. Aguilar did so with a runner on third base (Beckham) with nobody out.

As twobrewers noted, playing time has been hard to come by for the Brewers bats.

The Javelinas lost 3-2 tonight, but the Brewers' contingent did well by themselves.

Taylor Green played third, had a double and a walk in three plate appearances, and raisied his average to .400.

Lo Cain got into a game for the first time, played left field, and went 1-3 with a run scored, a stolen base, and a strike out.

David Welch pitched a scoreless 8th, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

A post of mine got crushed by Yuku maintenance before, but I just wanted to point out that today's Javelinas/Desert Dogs contest today featured a pretty interesting matchup between top pitching prospects Phil Hughes and Max Scherzer. Neither factored into the decision despite going 5 strong innings, and Cain's single did come against Scherzer, who saw significant time with the D-Backs this past season.

There is a nice feature on Jeremy Jeffress currently on BA's homepage (link for subscribers only):

Jeffress is working on throwing more strikes, keeping the ball down, improving his 2-seamer and improving the command of his secondary stuff by taking a little off of his curveball early in the game to get a feel for it before he started to snap off his harder ones. He was praised for his work ethic, coachability and mechanics, with this quote from the Javelinas pitching coach (Ted Power): ""That's a good, young strong arm with very smooth mechanics. Somebody has worked with him and really gotten him into a groove."'

In Progress: Phoenix 0, Peoria 3, after 4 innings

Gameday feature:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/ga...008_10_14_pddwin_perwin_1

Alexandre Periard came in the 4th inning to pitch. The first game Periard pitched, so did Jeremy Jeffress, so you may want to keep an eye on this game this afternoon if you're looking for a way to kill time between now and the end of the work day.

If Jeffress doesn't go today, you can be sure to follow him tomorrow, as the Javelinas will take on Mesa during another 1:35 CST starting time.

The starting lineup is Brewer-less.

Also, getting back to an earlier question, I can't seem to find any links or information about having any of the games broadcast on the internet. The championship game will be broadcast on MLB TV.

I've been having issues with MLB.com related sites recently, a problem I resolved this evening, so I apologize for not catching this feature before, but Taylor Green is blogging as part of his AFL experience, and his entries can be found here:

Also, regarding my post from earlier today, Periard ended up pitching only that one, scoreless inning, and Jeffress never found his way into the game, so hopefully he goes tomorrow.

Taylor Green went 1-4 with a walk. He's hitting .357 with a .938 OPS. Commited his first error of the AFL.

Lorenzo Cain went 2-5. He's hitting .375 with a .750 OPS.

David Welch pitched a third of an inning, walking one but giving up no runs.

Brae Wright pitched a perfect 8th inning striking out all three batters he faced.

I was at the game today and Lou was the first thing I noticed?! I am guessing he is a taxi squad guy (W and Sun) only. He makes the 4th catcher on the roster. Brae Wright was downright filthy in the 8th today. He had all three batters flailing all over the place. One of Green's ABs today was an absolute rocket, but right at the guy in LF. From a somewhat neutral perspective with a touch of Brewers bias, our guys, when they play, are producing and looking good.

Jeffress gave up a lead off single, but got a DP ball to get out of the 1st inning without any runs.

Tyler Green just walked. 10 pitch at bat.

EDIT: Just scored.

Edit 2: Jeffress is getting rocked. 2 runs already this inning. 14 strikes, 11 balls.

Edit 3: Tyler Green goes YARD!

Please keep all in-game comments to one reply. This really isn't an IGT. Thanks. - Toby

Jeremy Jeffress goes 3.1 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 BB and 3 ER while striking out 3. It seemed as though his starts during the regular season followed an on and off sequence as well.

Finding the strike zone was his biggest issue on the day, as only 36 of the 67 pitches he threw were for strikes.

As noted above, Taylor Green hit a home run, a 2-run shot, which accounted his first home run and his first 2 RBI in the league. Overall he went 1-4, scoring a pair of runs, walking once and striking out once. He is now hitting .333 and hopefully sees more regular playing time through the rest of the league's season.

Omar Aguilar closed out the game for the Javelinas while picking up his first save. He did give up a hit, and struck out a batter (interestingly enough his first strikeout in 3 appearances), but was finding the zone hitting the zone on 11 of his 14 pitches.
