Derek Lowe

He is set to be a free agent. Yay or nay? I very much like Lowe, but would be afraid of having to overpay much like we did for Suppan. I think Lowe is a much better pitcher then Suppan and more consistent but they are close to being the same pitcher. What do you think?

Possible Rotation:

Gallardo

Lowe

Parra

Bush

Suppan

Ill pass on penny, unless it is an incentive contract, but I would love to get Lowe. He is in my opinion one of the most underated pitchers in baseball, he has pitched over 199 innings the last 4 years, with an ERA under 4 in each of those seasons. Lowe does not walk guys, and even in Miller park he would not give up a ton of home runs, because he has a great groundball rate.

That groundball rate is kind of a concern to me though. The brewers do not have a very good defense, so that could be a problem since he does not strike out a ton of guys, and relies on the infielders to make the plays. If we get Lowe I would like to see Escobar take over at short which improves our infield range dramatically, and allows the brewers to trade one of the top 5 offensive shortstops in the game for some much needed bullpen help. Huston Street closing would be mighty nice.

I'll pass on Huston Street. If we trade Hardy I would rather get a young starting pitcher in the deal. Lowe is 35 years old not someone who the Brewers should be investing there money into for a contract that would be for at least 4 years long. That means Lowe would be 39 at the end of his contract with the Brewers. I don't see that as an option.

Penny could be signed for a deal similar to what Cameron got a one year deal with a team option for the second.

I dont think that is a guarantee that Lowe gets a 4 year deal. The brewers can make a competitive three year deal, if Lowe takes it or not that is another story. Also Lowe has not shown any signs of slowing down in fact this year, he had arguably the second best year of his career.

Great points, all the reasons I would like to get Lowe. But at probably at least a 4 year deal like nate said it could be a gamble since Derek is 35.

Yes it would be a gamble, but any big deal to any player esspecially pitcher's are going to have a good amount of risk involved with it. There have been plenty of younger pitchers who have gotten big deals and fizzled, on longer deals, like Pavano and Hampton. At least with an older player you are only giving him 4 years at most because of that risk as opposed to going 6-8 on a younger guy.

If derek lowe prefers to play out east, that does not mean that he will not play anywhere else. Cameron was supposed to be dead set on playing in atlanta, but he ended up here. All you can do is offer a competitive deal and hope he takes it. I also think he went up from 3/45, but I think that 3/52 could get it done, esspecially with a club option with a nice buy out number.
