Jose Reyes

Cnnsi suggested the Mets might be willing to trade Reyes and/or Wright as a bit of a shakeup this year. I'm assuming we have enough to get him, we could center it around either Hardy or Escobar, then move Hardy to 3rd or Escobar to second. Reyes leads the league in multi hit games with a pretty decent OBP and he can certainly run. I dont know what his contract is like, but Reyes for Escobar, Taylor Green and Corey Hart? Pick up Cameron's option and add a FA outfielder to a one or two year deal.

We have an organizational log-jam at short and a hole at third if Gamel can't cut it defensively. If we're talking Reyes or Wright, I'd much rather have Wright. His .389 obp would look nice in our lineup, or any lineup as far as that goes.

After numerous blogs threw out the idea of trading Reyes, Wright, or Beltran, John Heyman said that the mets "seem dead set against breaking up their star-studded nucleus of Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran." I dont think that it is impossible to get one of these guys, but very unlikely and it would cost a ton, and they would probably want major league ready players. If we are going to give up a bunch of players, I would prefer Wright

I'd make an aggressive offer for Wright if he's at all available. He improves OBP and defense. I'd do Fielder plus prospects for Wright. Trade Hart for a pitcher, maybe even use him in the Wright trade if necessary and then use the prospects for a pitcher.

Move Gamel to right, Nelson at 1st, keep Branyan for the bench and security blanket for Nelson. Bring Kapler back for same role with Gamel. Durham for same role with Weeks. Start Escobar at AAA and if Weeks struggles think about Escobar filling in at 2nd until the SS logjam is situated.

2B Weeks...Durham

RF Gamel...Kapler

3B Wright

LF Braun

SS Hardy

1B Nelson...Branyan

CF Cameron

C Kendall

I think that's a good lineup. Defense is better at 3rd and 1st and likely worse in RF. Maybe bat Hardy 2nd with Gamel 5th, Cam 6th and Nelson 7th, either way.

You still have for a rotation:

Gallardo

Parra

(pitcher from Hart/prospects trade)

Bush

Suppan

Have some work to do with the bullpen but I think you still have some money to work with in FA and a few guys (Hall, Dillon, Gwynn) that you can move for some arms and see if they stick. Obviously won't get anything special back for them but if you can get a few more Mota or Torres type moves for guys who are no help to us anyways, then why not.

In the .01% chance something like a Fielder for Wright trade goes down, southpaw nailed the corresponding moves. I'd be for it all - I am for retaining Durham and Branyan. Probably a bit too lefty heavy, but keep Lamb around for the bench too. Kapler and Rivera as the other benchers.

The thought of Jose Reyes makes me more gitty than the thought of Wright. I'm not saying Reyes is better, but we need him more, in my opinion. We would have a legitimate leadoff hitter for the first time since Podsednik, and someone who could actually get on base ahead of Braun and Fielder. As far as the organizational logjam at short, I dont see it that way at all. Either Hardy or Escobar, both major league ready players would go. The remaing one could very easily switch positions. We have Green at third, although i suggested he go in the deal, and Brett Lawrie can play some third. Plus for the immediate time we have Hall, Branyon, and Mike Lamb. But if we keep Green, we have Green and Lawrie, one of who should be ready by 2010. Not to mention we move away a bit from this homerun or bust offense, which is currently very painful to watch, and have someone that might be on base when we do hit a homerun. Kapler and Cameron can return, youd have Gillespie, Gamel, and hopefully Brantly available internally and could go after a guy like Edmonds or Abreu in the FA market.

Assuming its Hart, Hardy, and Taylor Green

SS Reyes

CF Cameron

LF Braun

1B Fielder

RF Abreu/Kapler

2B Weeks

3B Hall/Branyon

C Kendall

AAA has Escobar at 2nd and Gamel in RF Gillespie in LF

Or Escobar, Hart, and Green

SS Reyes

3B Hardy

LF Braun

1B Fielder

RF Abreu/Kapler

CF Cameron

2B Weeks

C Kendall

Lawrie plays 3rd in the minors and is ready when Hardy wants out.

I know it's sexy to think about a "prototypical" leadoff hitter with all that speed, but we need guys that get on base, regardless of where they bat. Wright(.389) gets on base a lot more than Reyes(.336), and is a stud defender. Third base is a black hole, SS is a position of strength, adding Wright and anyone different at first improves the infield defese..a lot.

1. Weeks(.352) 2. Wright (.389) > 1. Reyes (.336) 2. Cameron (. 340)

Escobar's ceiling is Jose Reyes.

We don't have anyone who really projects to David Wright's ceiling. They are both fantastic players - but Wright would be far more usefull to the Brewers. That said, this was PURELY a suggestion of a local NY writer. I would be shocked if the Mets broke up Wright/Beltran/Reyes.
