Hawaiian League - End of a Mini-Era, On To Arizona

Mass Haas

Logan Schafer had a huge day for West Oahu, going 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. He hit a 2-run HR in the 2nd inning, an RBI single in the 4th and an RBI double in the 5th.

Caleb Gindl was bumped up to the 2-hole, and while he went 0-3 with 2 Ks, he did draw a pair of walks and stole a base.

The Brewers in both the HWB and AFL haven't been big storylines this fall, so this one is refreshing to see. No HWB games scheduled this evening.

Schafer, Hatcher hammer Honu

Brewers prospect Logan Schafer drove in four runs and missed the cycle by a triple Sunday as the West Oahu CaneFires beat the North Shore Honu, 7-1, to complete a three-game sweep.

Schafer, mired in an 0-for-16 slump, went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in the second inning off Jose Capellan (Red Sox), an RBI single in the fourth and a run-scoring double in the fifth. The 22-year-old left fielder has a homer and eight RBIs in 14 Hawaii Winter Baseball games.

Hitless in his previous six games, Schafer raised his average 55 points to .209.

Orioles catching prospect Wally Crancer hit a solo homer in the fifth and Chris Hatcher (Marlins) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the CaneFires (11-8).

Hatcher, who spent the regular season with Class A Advanced Jupiter, has eight hits, including a pair of homers, and four RBIs in his last four games.

Baltimore farmhand Chris Salberg (1-0) struck out three and held the Honu to one run on two hits and a walk over four innings for the win.

Capellan (0-1) surrendered five runs on six hits and a walk over three frames.

Kyle Martin (Royals) and Korean catcher Sung Woo Jang each drove in two runs for North Shore (6-13). Kenji Sato of Japan's Chiba Lotte Marines, went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Baseball America reports that RHP Cody Scarpetta has been added to the Hawaiian League roster.

No word on whether he's a 5th eligible Brewer, or whether he's replacing either LHP Mike Ramlow or LHP Chris Cody.

Regardless, nice to see....

Could be bad news if it means Cody is injured...

It didn't take long for Cody Scarpetta to make his HWB debut, as he pitched this evening, an earlier game for this league. Here's his line:

3 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 1 BB

The line isn't pretty, but all four runs he gave up came in his first inning of work, and for prospect followers out there, here are the first six batters he faced: Tony Thomas, Buster Posey, Yonder Alonso, Todd Frazier, Roger Kieschnick, Austin Romine. Yowzers, that's a college all-american team right there.

The first five batters reached, and unfortunately he hit the sixth, Austin Romine, who was removed from the game, so hopefully there's nothing serious there, as the timing of the HBP (it followed a bases clearing double by Kieschnick) can't leave good feelings among the players/teams. Scarpetta did manage to strike out the remaining three batters in the inning, and faced the minimum the rest of the way, getting a chance to redeem himself against a mighty tough Waikiki lineup his second time through.

Logan Schafer and Caleb Gindl each went 1-3 with a walk.

I tuned into tonight's West Oahu game late, and was able to catch the CaneFires go into extra innings vs. the Honu.

Chris Cody started the game for West Oahu, and pitched very well, going 5 innings giving up 2 hits and 2 walks striking out 4. 42 of his 72 pitches went for strikes.

With the game tied 2-2, and with the A's talented RHP Brett Hunter coming onto the mound, Logan Schafer got things started with a leadoff walk. He scored the go-ahead run (on Wisconsin native's Mark Hallberg's 2-run double), stealing second base in the process. He ended up striking out during his second AB in the 10th to finish the day 2-4 with 2 runs, 1 BB and 1 K.

Caleb Gindl didn't look as though he was going to have a very good night before hitting a 2-run single in the 10th, 2 batters before Schafer had his 2nd AB of the inning. Neither have been hitting the ball particularly well, and of course we haven't had any HWB games to follow the past few days, so it was nice to see them both contribute in an exciting, 8-2 win in which West Oahu scored 6 runs in the top of the 10th.

Cody Scarpetta got the start tonight for West Oahu, and things were not pretty. He only recorded one out and allowed 5 ER on 4 hits and 2 BBs. The only out he recorded (a strikeout) was the last batter he faced. Given that he plunked a batter in his last game after getting rocked, you have to wonder if emotions are getting the best of Cody during his short stint in the HWB.

It would be so nice to see Gindl and Schafer build off of a successful game. Wisconsin native Mark Hallberg did so again today, after his big hit last night, going 3-5 raising his BA to .353. Gindl and Schafer both went 1-4, Gindl with a double, and Schafer with an RBI.

West Oahu plays another early game tomorrow, starting at 3pm HT (8 pm CST).

Sorry Mike, we haven't heard what the details are. It definitely sounds like an injury replacement.

Chris Cody got the start today for the West Oahu CaneFires against the incredibly tough lineup of the Waikiki Beach Boys, which boasts the likes of Buster Posey, Yonder Alonso, Tony Thomas and Roger Kieschnick. Cody lasted 5 innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 walks which led to 4 ER, while striking out 6. He actually retired Thomas, Posey and Alonso quickly in the 1st, as most of the damage against him came after those three batters in the 2nd inning, and the red-hot Posey was 0-3 against him.

Caleb Gindl returned to the lineup today, although batting third which was somewhat surprising to see. He responded well, going 2-4 with a double, 2 runs, 1 RBI and a K. Logan Schafer also went 2-4, and had a run scored and a K.

Cody Scarpetta didn't have the prettiest of lines this evening (4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 4 BB), but he pitched well enough to earn his first HWB victory as West Oahu blew out Honolulu, 13-5.

Caleb Gindl definitely stepped up to help his teammate, with another strong performance batting third, going 2-5 with a pair of doubles, 3 RBI, a run and a walk. Logan Schafer also chipped in, with a 1-3 night that included a double of his own and a pair of walks. Schafer has really been doing a good job drawing walks (and not striking out) during his stint in the HWB, while Gindl took a while to heat up during the regular season as well. Let's hope the success continues to these guys finish the fall on a high note!

Caleb Gindl was one of three CaneFires to record a hit last night, going 1-4 in a game that ended 0-0.

He now has 5 hits (3 of those hits were doubles) in his last 13 ABs since being moved into the 3-hole for the CaneFires, and as one astute reader has pointed out to me, many of his hits are going to LF where he seems to enjoy more success.

The league is off today (Thursday), the second to last off-day of the HWB season.

West Oahu decided to give Gindl a night off in the middle of a nice little hot streak. Logan Schafer played RF instead and went 2-5, bumping his average above .250 (.256), while also adding an assist throwing out a runner trying to stretch a double into a triple (there was a relay throw in between).

Chris Cody is scheduled to start today's game.

The CaneFires, one win away from clinching a berth in the championship game, finished yet another game in a tie, a 6-6 contest with North Shore.

Chis Cody started and pitched very well, tossing 5 innings giving up only 1 hit and 2 BB while striking out 2. 36 of his 54 pitches went for strikes, and he lowered his ERA to 3.90.

Caleb Gindl returned to the lineup, although batting 7th, behind Logan Schafer. Gindl went 1-4 with a run scored, while Schafer was a late inning replacement for the red-hot Cyle Hankerd. Schafer recorded a hit in his only AB.

There are no HWB games scheduled for Monday, 11/10/08.

I'm not sure if Gindl has a nagging injury or what, but he isn't in tonight's starting lineup, which stands out more than usual considering he was swinging the bat pretty well, and he sat two games ago while yesterday was an off day.. Schafer is taking his place in RF, and Cody Scarpetta is the starter tonight for the CaneFires. Details in the morning, unless some night owl (or a big Scarpetta fan that's willing to burn the midnight oil) beats me to them.

CaneFires clinch division title

Hankerd hits grand slam in 6-3 triumph over BeachBoys

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/a...ws_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Cody Scarpetta struck out eight over five one-hit innings and Cyle Hankerd hit a grand slam Tuesday as the West Oahu CaneFires clinched the West Division title with a 6-3 win over the Waikiki BeachBoys.

Scarpetta (2-2) allowed only a two-out single in the first to Giants' first-round pick Buster Posey and a walk, retiring 11 consecutive batters from the first through the fifth. He recorded seven strikeouts in one eight-batter span.

The 20-year-old right-hander pitched in 12 Rookie-level games, making eight starts, between the Arizona League Brewers and Helena of the Pioneer League this season, going 2-0 with a 2.23 ERA.

Hankerd staked Scarpetta to a quick lead when he emptied the bases in the opening frame. Fellow Diamondbacks prospect Mark Hallberg started the inning with a single, James Skelton (Tigers) walked and Miles Durham (Pirates) singled before Hankerd connected for his fifth Hawaii Winter Baseball homer.

Hankerd is hitting .368 (14-for-38) with 10 runs scored and 18 of his league-leading 30 RBIs over the last 11 games.

Orioles Minor Leaguer Tyler Henson stroked a two-run single in the second en route to his fourth straight multi-hit game for West Oahu (17-14), which nailed down a spot in Sunday's Championship Game.

Hallberg was 3-for-5 and scored twice to raise his average to .352 over 31 contests.

Waikiki starter Mitsuo Yoshikawa (3-2) surrendered six runs on seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts in three innings.

Yonder Alonso had three hits, while fellow Reds prospect Todd Frazier and Yankees Minor Leaguer Damon Sublett each drove in a run for the BeachBoys (17-16), who remained a half-game in front of Honolulu in the HWB East.

Box Score:

What an awesome game for Scarpetta. Nice to see him settle down and pitch a dandy with playoff implications on the line. I've mentioned before that Waikiki has a college all-star lineup that includes players such as Buster Posey, Yonder Alonso, Roger Kieschnick, Todd Frazier and Damon Sublett, so shutting them down so convincingly is that much more impressive.

Logan Schafer went 0-4.
