Hawaiian League - End of a Mini-Era, On To Arizona

Mass Haas

The HWL season opened on Saturday night. The four Brewers' kids are playing for West Oahu this season.

The CaneFires opened their season with a 12-3 victory.

Mike Ramlow took the win with two scoreless relief innings, and Chris Cody also tossed a scoreless inning.

Ramlow allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out two. He pitched the 3rd and 4th innings as six Oahu pitchers saw action. Cody struck out one in his perfect 8th inning.

OF Logan Schafer went 1-for-4, scored two runs. OF Caleb Gindl doubled in five AB's, striking out once and was caught stealing once.

While the box score isn't available as of this post, season-to-date stats are.

Game Two from day Two (Sunday) should be wrapping up any moment.

I am hopeful that we can have a combined effort among readers who wish to follow the league on a daily basis and post updates. Towards that end, please feel free to use the links just posted above as well as links to the sports sections of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser. These papers will post occasional game details and player features.

I personally will be taking a bit of a less active role in this forum through the offseason, a self-imposed sabattical if you will. I may kick off and guide story lines and threads such as this, and then ask for a community effort. I'll be reading all off-season, and will be back with guns blazing full-time again about the time minor league rosters are announced late next March. And of course, for Link Reports after that.

Thanks to everyone for your support, both past and future.

Jim

I had planned on updating it for you, but the boxscore wasn't available at 0900 CDT this morning, and by the time I got home for the game at 14:15 you had already snuck the update in....

In the game that wvpowerblkwel linked to, LHP Chris Cody got the start for the CaneFires, going 4 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 runs (a 2-run HR by 2008 3rd round pick Roger Kieschnick in the 4th inning) while striking out 4.

West Oahu lost to Waiki last night 11-2. CF Logan Schafer led off for the CaneFires and went 0-4 with a pair of Ks while RF Caleb Gindl went 0-3 with a BB and a K.

I won't bother with the game report from MLB.com since no Brewers farmhands were mentioned.

Not to much to say about the Brewer farmhands today as Canefires go down 9-1. Logan Schafer does get the only RBI of the nite with a Sac fly and three walks. Caleb Gindl gets the day off (tough thing when your in Hawaii!) Canefire Box Score

West Oahu rallied late to beat North Shore last night, 7-6. Logan Schafer led off for the CaneFires and went 1-4 (a triple), 2 runs scored, a walk and a strikeout. Caleb Gindl also went 1-4 with a walk and a strikeout. Schafer is now hitting .261 and Gindl is hitting .250.

Chris Cody got the start for West Oahu, and got roughed up a little over 3.1 innings of work giving up 8 hits, a walk and 4 ER. He did strike out 7 batters. 3 of the 4 runs he allowed came in the bottom of the 1st, and his ERA spiked to 6.48.

We haven't seen Mike Ramlow for a few games, so I'm not sure if they're giving him some rest to prepare for a start either tonight or tomorrow or if something else (injury) is going on. Hopefully we'll see his name in the box score again by the end of the weekend.

Another quiet night for the Brewers farmhands. Logan Schafer and Caleb Gindl both made their way back into the lineup, although Schafer got bumped down the order and played in LF. He went 0-4, but did pick up an RBI. Gindl was 1-4, maintaining that .250 batting average, scored once and struck out once.

Just when you mention him, he shows up. Mike Ramlow pitched very well in last night's game as West Oahu faced Yankees top draft pick Jeremy Bleich and the Waikiki team. Ramlow worked 3 innings, allowed 3 hits and struck out 3.

Logan Schafer and Caleb Gindl both went 0-4. Gindl had a pair of Ks.

Chris Cody

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/a...ws_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Chris Cody allowed one hit over five innings before the West Oahu CaneFires rallied in the eighth for a 1-1, 10-inning tie with the visiting Waikiki BeachBoys.

Cody (Brewers) and Waikiki starter Mitsuo Yoshikawa dueled for five frames before both clubs turned the game over to their bullpens. Cody struck out two and held the BeachBoys to a run on one hit and a walk. Yoshikawa, who played for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters this season, allowed two hits and a walk. He struck out three.

Yonder Alonso drew a two-out walk in the top of the first inning, stole second and scored when fellow Reds prospect Todd Frazier lined a double off the top of the wall in left-center field to give Waikiki (6-7-1) a 1-0 lead.

Frazier, the Reds' supplemental first-round pick in 2007, had both of Waikiki hits.

West Oahu (6-7-1) knotted the score in the eighth, 1-1, when Mark Hallberg (Diamondbacks) hit a double down the left-field line to plate Marlins catcher Chris Hatcher from second.

The CaneFires bullpen kept the game within reach for five innings. Brian Parker (Orioles) and Pirates farmhands Harrison Bishop and Moises Robles each tossed a perfect inning before Cliff Flagello (Orioles) allowed the BeachBoys' second hit over the final two frames.

Cubs prospect Jeremy Papelbon worked a scoreless 10th to secure the tie for Waikiki.

David Pfeiffer was charged with his first blown save after allowing a run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings for the 'Boys.

Box Score:

While Cody had a strong start, Caleb Gindl and Logan Schafer both return to the lineup and each record an 0-4 game.

Logan Schafer went 0-2 with a pair of walks and a stolen base, while Caleb Gindl went 1-3 with a run scored. They're hitting .162 and .209 respectively.

Mike Ramolow gave up 2 ER in an inning of work, striking out a batter, giving up a single and a triple and allowing the 2nd run to score on a groundball out.

Neither Schafer nor Gindl are in the starting lineup for West Oahu this evening, which is probably a good thing the way they've been swinging the bats. Game updates (if there are any) to come in the morning.

EDIT: The only detail of note from last night's game is that Schafer scored a run as a pinch hitter late in the game as West Oahu rallied in the 8th inning to win.
