FA Compensation

mancl

I am a casual baseball fan compared to most on this board and would appreciate some information about free agency. If a player is deemed to be a certain level player at his position a team that loses the player gains a draft choice correct. If the signing team is rated in the top half of the teams theydon't lose a pick and the forfited picks go between rounds, ? If a signing team is rated in the top half of teams they lose a pick. Is that correct?

In other words if CC signs with the Mets, the Mets have to give up a pick. If he signs with Washington the picks come between rounds.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

There are 3 types of free agents.

Type A - compensation is a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd round and a first round pick from the team that signs them unless that team drafts in the top half of the 1st round, then it is a 2nd round pick

Type B - compensation is a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd round

everyone else - no compensation

To get these compensation picks a team has to offer their own free agent arbitration by a certain date(December 1st this year).
