9/17/08 Brewers (Sheets) at Cubs (Marquis): 7:05 PM CDT... Biggest start of Ben's career?

naivin
Wasn't sure where to put this, so I'll stick it here...I will submit that tomorrow is the biggest start of Sheets' MLB career. After his weak outing last time, his team needs him desperately. For his own sake, he could probably use a strong performace on national TV as well. I don't think its is overly hyperbolic to say that the season may well be on the line tomorrow. CC has picked him up the last couple months and its time for him to return the favor.

Totally agree naivin. If a two week period of bad play is enough to get a manager fired then one game is enough to determine if Sheets really all he was advertised to be.

Does that mean CC'S start last night is enough to determine that he really wasn't what he was advertised to be? Even great starting pitchers have average to bad performances from time to time, especially against equally good offenses. To judge any starter on one start is simply unfair. As much as fans like to think it so, Professional athletes cannot just will themselves to a dominating performance.. You could tell that CC wanted to last night but the Cubs still got to him. They have a great offense and hit some good pitches. Over the last month, it seems like if Sheets doesn't pitch a complete game shutout, he didn't rise to the occasion. It seems to me that he has no chance of satisfying Brewer fans at this point.

C'mon Brew Crew...we've detected a pulse. Prince is now driving...hop on board and get some. I loved how he was yelping at the fans who were heckling him. They were doing the same thing in LA last year before he unloaded with two monster bombs. I sure hope this thing is contagious.

Marquis is a stiff...let's get some batting practice going early tonight.

6 ER in 5.1 innings last time out against the Cubs for Sheets. Wasn't pretty. If he throws BP like he did in Philly, we're getting swept yet again in this series.
I actually got to watch that game and the funny thing for me was that I didn't feel that Sheets pitched all that badly, despite the result. Two mistake pitches to Ryan Howard resulted in 4 runs (2 off the homer, 1 off his double, and then he was driven in). Two of the other big hits (I believe both were by Ruiz?) were on a low outside pitch that the batter somehow drove into right for a double (driving in Howard) and a bloop single that eventually became the 5th run.

He didn't pitch a "good" game by any means, but he still kept his team in it.

Ben has already had a terrific career and proven himself as an ace, nothing that happens tonight will change that. However, if you really want to be known as an elite athlete, one needs to be the guy that rises to the occasion on the biggest stage. Ben will be making 3 critical starts over the next week. He won't be the complete factor on whether they win or lose, but he'll be a big one. Rightly or wrongly, these three starts will go a long way on how Ben's Brewers career will be judged. It's Big Boy Time.

Yep as usual all this talk about Ben stepping up to prove he is an ace is nonsense. CC has got fat off easy teams all year and then struggles in his only two 'big games' and nobody says a thing, Sheets has a rough game against a big team and he is proving he isn't an ace again.

Just don't understand it one bit.

The Brewers will pass the Mets tonight for the Wild Card lead and hold on to it.

Today's the first day I'll have cable in a month and the game will probably be blacked out on ESPN http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

Not living in Milwaukee, I only get to see the Brewers' nationally televised games (and even all of those, depending on regional selection). I think the last game I watched the Brewers win was the 6-3, 10 inning affair in St. Louis during the sweep.

This is kind of a silly comment...The Brewers are 12-2 in CC's starts. Those starts came against the CHC (2), CIN (2), SD (2), PIT (2), HOU, WAS, ATL, STL, SF, COL.

The Brewers were 5-7 over that same span in Sheets starts against PHI, NYM, CIN (2), STL (2), HOU, SD (2), WAS, ATL, CHC, SF, COL

I agree Sheets has faced a tougher slate, but he hasn't simply had a rough game against a big team, and I for one am not saying he's pitched badly overall, but to say CC has simply gotten fat off easy teams is a bit disingenuous.

BTW, what is your definition of struggling in big games? To use your examples, CC's struggles consisted of 3 ER in 6.1IP, and 4 ER in 7IP - both against the Cubs. Compare that to Sheets in similar situations against the Cubs he gave up 6 ER in 5.1IP, and agsints the Phillies the other day he gave up 5 ER in 6IP. All four were big games, and frankly, the performances aren't really close.

Anyway, that wasn't my point. My point was that this is the biggest start Sheets has faced in his MLB career. In his 7 years, the lights have never been brighter then they will be tonight. Nobody's asking him to step up and prove he's an ace. I am saying his team needs him to step up and be an ace. The Brewers definitely need this game, and he needs to pitch well and give them a chance. That's what an ace is asked to do, and when the heat is turned up, they are asked to do it even more. Just the way it is.

His BB are about the same as the first half and his k's are actually down. First half he had a .318 BABIP, second half a .265.

His July and August numbers were fine but then his Sept numbers are .164/.207/.255/.461 with a .196 BABIP. A really nasty month.
