Non-Brewer Game Thread 5/20/06 Cubs and Sox brawl

Recommended Posts

let me be the first to say that i think aj was trying to avoid contact with barrett while heading toward the bench. you can see his shoulder move away from barrett then barrett lunges after him.

barrett should be out for many games IMO.

And then Iguchi launches a grand slam.

You can put that on the board, Cubs fans!

5-0 White Sox in the 3rd.

Hopefully Barrett gets about a 15 game suspension since that was a about as cheap as it gets. That would be a major blow to an already pathetic offense.

I'll stand on record as well to say that I don't think Pierzynski intentionally bumped into Barrett.

I've been reading the Cubs boards and it seems most everyone thinks that AJ deserved to be sucker punched. Classy people, those Cub fans.

All I have to say is, good job Barrett! This team needs motivation. Thank you.

That was so awesome. AJ's collision was completely unnecessary and as a catcher he should know better. Barrett just became my favorite player and I hate the Sox more than ever now. Yeah Barrett is gonna miss some time but this team is going nowhere and it was worth it.

So Barrett's just supposed to sit back and take AJ's antics? He could have been seriously injured for no reason at all. I'd take exception to it as well. Its a guy's career he's messing around with there.

ask jj hardy what he is going to do when he has the decision between sliding into a catcher blocking the plate and running him over.

i am already sick of cubs fans saying that pierzynski shouldnt have ran the catcher over...it is part of the game people.

Not saying he deserved to get popped for it....but...AJ's emphatic slam of the plate with his fist was completely over the top. You just nearly knocked a guy out on a clean hard play at the plate. You did your job, you don't top it off by trying to show him up and slamming the plate with your fist to say "mission accomplished"...you just touch the plate with your hand and walk away without making eye contact....I'm guessing that's what Barrett took exception to...

In addition...from Yahoo's coverage...

"As Pierzynski went back to the dugout, he raised his hands in the air while a soldout crowd at U.S. Cellular Field roared. He slapped hands with his teammates."

Just another reason why Pierzynski is one of the biggest morons in baseball.

I think it has zero effect when it comes to "motivation", etc., but that picture puts a smile on my face.

Yeah, AJ is one of the biggest jerks in the game, but the reason that picture puts a smile on my face is because looking at it made it perfectly clear that Barrett is going to be out for a couple of weeks and the Cubs get to replace him in their already pathetic lineup with Henry Blanco.

Punkzynski should just quit baseball and go to the WWE where he can behave like an over-roided freak and get away with it.*

(* Just for the record, I like wrestling. And AJ would be a great heel. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif )

Wearing my heart on my sleeve since birth. Hopefully, it's my only crime.

Video of the fight

I don't know how anyone could defend Barrett in this situation. Sure AJ slapping the plate maybe was a little over the top, but Barrett needs to act like an adult. AJ was just walking away and Michael got in his face and sucker punched him. That was completely uncalled for and just plain immature childish behavior.

Just saw some longer clips of the collision/punch/aftermath on ESPN, and I can't see that Pierzynski's hit was that out of line, it wasn't like Pete Rose and Ray Fosse in the 1970 All Star game.

Dusty (from Yahoo) seems to agree:

Quote:
"I asked Michael what happened and Michael said he (Pierzynski) hit him without the ball, but that's baseball to me," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said during an in-game TV interview.

Also I don't get the hatred for Pierzynski. I doubt he's a spokesman for the Human Fund, but it all seems a bit overblown. He plays with fire, I like that in a catcher, he's the field general whether on offense or defense. I got a kick of the way he stomped back to the dugout like a wrestler.

Anyway, the Cubs are pathetic.

I know this guy is kind of a touchy subject to some around here, but Branyan just hit a 2-run walkoff bomb for the D-Rays.

Aaah, the wonderful baseball fights. I appreciate Barrett actually throwing (and landing) a punch, but the pictures above tell the story...lots of slapping and pulling on each others' jerseys. Nicely done. Gotta love Chicago.

I watched the game on MLB TV and AJ did nothing wrong. He rammed into Barrett like most players would to score. AJ was just excited that he actually was safe at home and slapped the plate. Barrett didn't even see AJ do that so that wasn't a factor in Barrett punching AJ. I saw Podsednik lunge after Barrett to keep him down and then Anderson started throwing punches at Mabry. It was a huge mess but AJ didn't deserve to be thrown out of the game especially since he was the one punched and then he walked away. He didn't get into anything else with anyone.

Barrett is a whimp and was just embarressed he got showed up. For Cubs fans to be condoning this kind of behavior says alot about them.
