Donation time

It's not too late to donate. Brian is planning on making a payment now and another payment after checks roll in.

Note that ads may show up in posts at some point tomorrow (Monday). That's a side effect of switching payment systems, and it should only happen for a very brief period. (We're moving from the ezBoard system to the Yuku large board system.)

If ads show up for any more than a brief period, we can have Yuku staff "kick start" the switchover. They occasionally have to do that for boards. Note that if we're seeing ads, we're not paying for anything; page views with Yuku-generated ads are free.

I can't answer the suicide hotline question. mothershipconnection is in charge of that.

Casey,

I remember the Community Chest thing in EZBoard from my Everquest days and early on with this board, did that option go away with Yuku? Using that feature could donate directly to the board via credit card IIRC...

Yuku replaced the ezBoard fund-raising system with a system where pricing is based on the size of individual donations. Brian opted for the personal paypal route so we could pool our donations toward the largest possible discount.

It's possible that in the future, Yuku might offer a fundraising system where individual contributions within a short period would be discounted at the same rate as if a single member had made the donation. A staff member has "specced this up," but management has placed it on the back burner.

So, yes, we can open things up so members can contribute directly to Yuku, but Brewerfan opted to try a different route this time around. If we were to go the "pay Yuku directly" route, it would be via PayPal anyway. One wouldn't need a PayPal account to do make a payment; PayPal simply handles the funds.

I'm no PayPal expert, but I think the same holds true in this case. As far as I know, one should be able to send funds to Brian without starting up a PayPal account. The difference would be that you'd have to enter more information.

As far as splitting the payment into two portions, we shouldn't be hurt enough by this for it to matter. The discount would drop by a less than a percentage point.

Some sample discounts:

  • $66 ... 26.66667%
  • $126 ... 30.00000%
  • $252 ... 31.70732%
  • $504 ... 32.53012%
  • $1,002 ... 32.93173%
  • $2,004 ... 33.13313%
  • $4,008 ... 33.23338%
  • $8,016 ... 33.28340%
  • $80,160 ... 33.32834%
  • $801,600 ... 33.33283%

Maybe I'm off base, but it sort of upsets me that 3,300+ of us haven't ponied up enough cash yet for 1 more year of Bf.net.

Brian, are you intentionally not posting the total needed vs what you have so far?
No, it's just that people have asked for mailing addresses for checks so I don't know what a true total is, as a few outstanding checks are still coming in. Unfortunately, I've been running back and forth between the hospital, so I haven't been able to organize a normal posting of amounts as I normally would have.

I'll defer to Brian for definite numbers, but we're thinking more in terms of a "goal" than a "total needed." That's because we're now on a prepaid system where we buy ad-free page views in advance (much like a prepaid phone card). Discounts are based on payment size: as lump sums paid to Yuku increase, the size of the discount also increases.

On ezBoard, Brian would be sent a bill that had to be paid. If we were falling short in donations, there'd be a problem in meeting the obligation. In this case, Brian and I were each able a small payment to Yuku to hold us over while personal checks came in.

On the day Brewerfan's Gold ran out, Brian's computer took a dump, so I made my "board donation" by paying directly to Yuku; Brian added a cushion a couple of days later. We wouldn't have had the option of making "holdover" payments on ezBoard. (By the way, LambeauLeap has cost so little that we've been running it entirely on "holdover" payments.)

On ezBoard, donation overages would also be an issue. They'd sit in the Commmunity Chest until the next bill came. With Yuku, we can pay as much as we have or as much as we want and have credit applied immediately. The decision to sit on funds would be Brian's, not Yuku's. The only reason for holding them would be to pool donations for a bigger discount

Basically, the bottom line is the more Brewerfan gets, the bigger the discount we get on page views. And more page views will take us further into the future without having to ask for money again.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
