Donation time

Quite a while has passed since we last asked for donations (Jan 21 2007), but it seems that finally our time is about up. The renewal date for Yuku is upon us (Friday of this week), and we are in a pretty big deficit (i.e., negative money) for paying for our message board. In the past, ezBoard had a "community chest" feature, in which people could pay directly to the community chest, and once a certain threshhold was reached, I "paid the bill" and all was merry for another year.

Yuku doesn't have this feature, so what we're reduced to now is collecting the funds via PayPal and then negotiating with Yuku for a price. Casey's done a fair bit of legwork on this, and the way to best pull this together is collect the funds over a short period (such as this week), and then work with Yuku to get the best negotiated price.

So, I would ask that if you feel that you use brewerfan.net a bit (either posting or lurking), send some money via PayPal to webmaster@brewerfan.net ... There is also the current $50 per month cost of the "main site", as well as server costs for the "new site" ($50 every 3 months). Obviously, this is a community-driven site, so any assistance that you feel comfortable giving will keep Brewerfan.net going until hopefully at least Mat Gamel is our starting third baseman http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks,

Brian

I'll have to do it when I get home from work but, yeah, no problem. Any recommended amount?

Last time, you guys closed it out before I had a chance to make a submission so hopefully it will still be open by this evening.

I don't want to recommend an amount, because some people are only able to give X many dollars depending on how things are going for them right now, and how much they feel the site's worth to them.

Of the 9 donations received so far, we've ranged from $12.50 to $200.00 (wow!). The median seems to be $25.00.

Yes, it is different from being a Yuku supporter.

Think of this "donation time" as the annual rent being due to Yuku. The reason we haven't owed since January 2007 is because of the deal Yuku offered Brewerfan when Brian agreed to have the board migrated from ezboard to Yuku last year.

This is not to say that being a Yuku supporter doesn't also help, but that's not brewerfan-specific.

(I'm sure Brian and/or 1992casey will fine tune my explanation if necessary)

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

The little community chest thing doesn't work for this? Where we can donate directly to the board account? Or was that gone with ezboard? Or am I confusing something else? I'm ashamed to admit I dont' have a paypal account but I'll figure it out after the Packer game.

have any of the powers that be looked into getting a self-hosted solution instead of pretty much being extorted by yuku. export the database, use a software package like vB or phpbb and host it somewhere else for much, much less, while having total control.
