Sounds' Final Three Games Cancelled
Date Posted: 8/29/2008

METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Zephyrs have announced that the final three games of the scheduled four-game season-ending series against the Nashville Sounds have been cancelled due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Gustav.

The teams will play their 2008 season finale at 7 p.m. on Friday evening at Zephyr Field. The Sounds will return to Nashville on Saturday.

The Baby Brewers are indeed playing, and got off to a fitting start given MH pointing out Carlos George's struggles and lack of walks:

  • Carlos George walks.
  • With Allixon Cequea batting, Carlos George steals (10) 2nd base.

2nd round RHP Seth Lintz got the start today for the A-Crew, and he's continued to underwhelm, although we'll write it off to transition to pro ball, etc., for the high schooler. But it's going to seem like a long wait until we see him again next June with Helena. Is anybody else pining for Brett Lawrie so we can feel better about all those early picks last June?

21-year-old RHP Greg Miller followed and struggled as he has all summer. Not a grand debut season for a 10th round major college selection, never making it out of the Arizona League.

Lintz and Miller combined for five wild pitches to a fairly experienced catcher (Uly Snijders), an HBP and seven walks in three innings.

A-Crew down 8-0 in the 4th...

I wonder if catcher Shawn Zarraga is on his way with a Helena trip reward. Helena's season doesn't end until Friday.

Final: Arizona Rangers 14, Arizona Brewers 4

Arizona Box Score

A-Crew scores all four in the 8th -- seems so often this season their runs came in garbage time after getting wallopped earlier; 17-year-old Venezuelan RHP Francisco Rivero gave up two earned runs in the 9th, his first two of the season (9.2 innings); 18-year-old Dominican RHP Edwin Linares posted decent numbers in 26 innings in his debut pro season -- with the young kids, just focus on H/IP and K and BB numbers; SS Carlos George's final error total is 37 -- rock-hard infields or not, that's a big number, but hey kid, Robin Yount had a season in the bigs with 44 (of course, that was in more than just 46 games); for most of this lineup, it was a matter of whether their individual batting averages would fall above or below the Mendoza line -- many were below...

Mass, Jim just mentioned the Kremblas interview on the radio broadcast and gave credit to seeing it linked on Brewerfan.net. Congratulations!

Thanks, I heard it live as well, cool as always. That's not what we seek necessarily (that's why I added the http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif when mentioning it), but the fact that the interview, somewhat buried within the Nashville site, was brought to attention and was news-worthy makes our efforts fun and worthwhile. The overall Brewer blogosphere has just been outstanding this season (like the Crew) in providing timely previously unreported updates and original material, most of which we've linked to here, trying to credit the original source whenever possible.

I just read the JS blog -- doesn't seem Tom either believes Frank Kremblas or he's chosen to ignore us again.

That makes having someone like Jim Powell all the more awesome, he's willing to not only mention something like that but give you guys credit for it too. I wonder if Haudricourt does find stuff here sometimes and just passes it off as common knowledge.

To add something to the minor league discussion, Mike Jones finishes the year with an ERA over 6. I wonder what the organization has in store for him. On the other side, Chris Cody finishes his Brevard season with an ERA under 2, it'll be interesting to see how he adapts to AA next year.

Gamel will be in Milwaukee on Sunday.

Not sure if this has been posted somewhere else or not.

Awesome! Thanks for the news Lexi.

I wonder though if you meant he will be with Milwaukee, as they will be in Pittsburgh tomorrow.

Also, I noticed Jones threw for Huntsville. They liked him enough to have him take up roster space all year. He got to nearly 80 innings on the season without a major setback. Isn't it a bit sad this this is his healthiest season? Here's hoping his stuff is coming back

Definitely thanks for sharing lexi. I would like to pretend I'm surprised, but the writing was on the wall as soon as he got bumped to Nashville.

I'm guessing in Milwaukee is the right call, since rosters don't technically expand until Monday.

Final: St. Lucie (Mets) 1, Brevard County 0

Brevard County Box Score

Chris Cody scattered nine hits and a walk in his seven innings -- he's topping off at 85 MPH, but it's sure fun to follow his pitching lines; the Manatees' season ends Sunday...

Brevard County Game Log

Both Cody and Casey Baron picked off Met first baseman Lucas Duda, who has all of two steals this year...

I have been for about a month now.

Jack Z is great at drafting hitters who can't field...I am not so sure his forte is drafting pitchers.

Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 8, West Virginia 1

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

SHIREK SHUTS POWER DOWN

Kannapolis right hander Charlie Shirek held the West Virginia Power to just a run on a pair of hits over seven innings on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park as the Intimidators defeated the Power 8-1 to take the third game of the series.

Kannapolis struck first with a three-run first inning and never looked back. Jorge Castillo brought in Eduardo Escobar with a sacrifice fly to give the Intimidators a 1-0 lead before Jim Gallagher's two-out double brought in the final two runs of the inning. The Power scored their only run in the bottom of the first on Steffan Wilson's RBI single.

Jordan Danks ripped a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning to increase the Kannapolis lead and the Intimidators pulled away with a three-run fifth inning. Christian Marrero and Matt Inouye smacked back-to-back two-out run-scoring doubles and Escobar singled in the final run of the inning. Gordon Beckham hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to plate the final run of the game.

Shirek (6-6) retired 11 batters in a row from the first inning through the fourth. He struck out eight over seven frames while allowing just a run on two hits in a winning effort. Wily Peralta (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits over an inning and a third. Jose Garcia and Mike Ramlow both tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

The Power fell to 76-61 on the year and 44-24 in the second half with the loss. The Intimidators improved to 66-67 on the year and 35-28 in the second half with the win. Steffan Wilson has knocked in 98 runs and needs four over the next two games to tie the franchise record. He has reached safely in 17 straight games. Eric Farris singled to extend his hitting streak to seven games. West Virginia has been held to two runs on six hits over their last 16 innings.

The Power will continue the five-game series against Kannapolis Sunday night. The Power will start right hander Evan Anundsen (12-7, 3.99) and the Intimidators will counter with right hander Levi Maxwell (14-5, 3.18). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM (5:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

Manager Jeff Isom will try to be creative to rest players while also maintaining some momentum -- Eric Fryer had the night off here; only so much rest you can set up with a 25-man roster; Zelous Wheeler's 60 walks help him to a .345 OBP despite a .260 average; Wily Peralta was certainly on a short pitch count as starter -- he retired four of the nine batters he faced (one was on a sacrifice fly), and was lifted with one on and one out in the 2nd...

Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 5, Huntsville 2

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Wood Wings Chattanooga to Win

Manuel's Labor Preserves Lookouts Victory
By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Eddy Rodriguez delivered the tie-breaking home run and Travis Wood worked six effective innings in Chattanooga's 5-2 victory Saturday night in the middle of the last regular season five-game set at AT&T Field. The Lookouts improved to 29-38 in the second half and 66-71 overall, while the Stars dipped to 31-37 in the half and 72-66 overall. The Stars lead the season series 13-10 and have won seven of 13 in Chattanooga.

Michael Garciaparra's home run off the scoreboard in left field with two outs in the first inning opened the scoring. It was his second of the series and third of the year with all three coming in Chattanooga. The Lookouts tied the game in the home fourth when Justin Turner scored from second base on a force play at second base, as Drew Anderson beat the throw back to first base to keep the inning alive.

Stars' starter Mike Jones walked Eric Eymann to begin the fifth before Rodriguez belted a 2-1 offering over the wall in right field for his second home run with the Lookouts to make it a 3-1 game. Jones had allowed only 12 home runs in his entire career before rejoining the Stars on May 19 and has given up 11 since. Jones allowed three hits, walked three and fanned three in taking the loss to finish the season at 1-6.

Wood held the Stars to only an Ozzie Chavez single over his last five frames and picked up the win to end the season at 4-9. He walked two and struck out two to beat the Stars for the first time in four tries after a suffering a loss in each of his prior three starts against them. Robert Manuel retired the first six hitters he faced before Guilder Rodriguez led off the ninth inning with a single and scored on Mike Bell fielder's choice grounder. Manuel struck out a pair and earned his third save of the season.

The series continues Sunday evening with left-hander Brae Wright taking the hill for the Stars against Lookouts' right-hander Sam LeCure. Coverage begins at 5:00 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Stars held in check by a pitcher with an ERA over 7.00 over 17 AA starts; Cole Gillespie will be fine (hand) -- he pinch-hit here, although he did strike out; the Stars teams that qualified for the postseason over nine Brewer-affiliated seasons never seemed to be the most top prospect-laden, this one came oh-so-close in the first half...
