Your Best/Worst List of Wisconsin restuarants

fondybrewfan
Best Greasy Spoon - Ted's (62nd and North Ave, Milwaukee)

Best Restaurant - Eddie Martini's (Watertown Plank Rd. Wauwatosa)

Best Organic (Runner-up best restaurant) - Roots (Brewer's Hill, Milwaukee)

Best Mexican - La Fuente (Runner-up La Estacion in Waukesha)

Best Sushi - Izumi's

Best Chinese - Yen Ching

Best Pizza - Balistreri's Ristorante (68th and Wells, Wauwatosa)

Honorable Mention Miscellaneous - Crawdaddy's

Worst Greasy Spoon - George Webb's. I hate it!

Worst Mexican - La Perla

I don't really go to bad restaurants.

Solid list. Have you tried Pizzeria Picola? It's a Balistreris place, but I think the actual restaurant is way over rated. It's good, but not great. But I love Pizzeria Picola. I used to live just down the street from Teds, great food, the cash only thing freaks out a lot of people.

Best Retauraunt: Sanfords - Sanford D'Amato makes some truely amazing food. I will recommend breaking open the bank, and just going witht he Chefs choice with wine pairing. It's not going to disapoint.

Best Steak - Corpers 5'Oclock Club. I heard they had a ownership change, I haven't been back for awhile. Place looks a mess, but steak is great.

Eddie Martinis is fantastic. Pretty good wine list, and Chris Murphy (Manager) has a pretty good nose for good wines. Had my first Silver Oak there, man that's some great wine.

Anyone have any oppinion on Dream Dance? I've been meaning to go there...

someone mentioned any hole in the wall mexican place and that reminded me of my favorite place for a burrito. Taco Burrito Mexico in Green bay on E Mason st.

Awesome stuff.

Been to Laras Tortilla flats in Oshkosh but not real fond of that one.

Sammy's pizza is pretty good but my favorite pizza in Appleton is Pizza King's Chicago pizza. They have the best sauce in town IMO and they use large pieces of meat and veggies instead of small ones so you can taste it when you bite into them.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Can't say I agree with that statement at all, other than the beer is good part. I don't think I've ever had anything I haven't loved, and trust me, I don't have a small sample size.

I am not trying to say the food is bad, but it is bar food done well. I wouldn't go just for the food. If they didn't make good beer I wouldn't return.

Deli: Koppa's

Grecian: Gyro Corner

Burger: Robert's (however, I have yet to be to Sobleman's or Solly's)

BBQ: Speed Queen

Mexican: Conejitos or Acapolco

Bar Food: Leff's or McBob's

Wing night: Brothers (it's a chain, but 10 cent wings and dollar high lifes are right up my alley, good sauces too!)

Pizza: Ballestreri's

Pastys: Renyold's (I doubt there is any other pasty place really in Milwaukee, but it's one of my favorites, a meal in itself!)

I've gotten to eat at tons of fine dining places over the years with Grandparent's at Christmas time, but only eating at each one once, I can't really say "you gotta eat here, try the______!" So I'm leaving those off, I don't think a one time experience is worthy of high praise.

Also, anyone been to Pizza Shuttle lately? I used to love that place. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the quality has changed, but the prices are becoming rediculous! 4 something a slice? That's a joke. Also, I've heard recently that weekends after midnight they have cops out there and metal detectors and whatnot. I don't wanna deal with that.

Another place I'd like to check out is Jake's Deli on 12th and north. Anyone been there? Price range? I hear the corned beef can't be touched.

Now we're talking! Sounds like a fun night for $20. My two favorite things: High Life and wings.

We only order a pizza to go from Pizza Shuttle. It's not worth waiting for the delivery guy and it's not worth dealing with the psedo-emo/hip kids who are there. We usually spend about $20 and feed 3+ on a pizza and breadstick things, which we figure isn't so bad.

Koppa's is a diamond in the rough. LOVE that I can walk there.

I'll second Pizzaria Piccola. The smells in that place alone are worth the price. They also do a cool thing on Sunday nights where a non-profit comes in and works as the servers/bussers and all the tips and a portion of the profit go to the organization. I work with a dog rescue and we made more than $500 the last time we did it. Very cool of them to do.

When I lived in Milwaukee I loved going to Hooligan's for dinner. They have great bar food.

20? are you ordering 100 wings? I usually can get by under 10 and that includes tips. Either way, check it out! The only bad part is the wait in line, get there before 9 (that's when the deal for wings starts, high lifes are all night), it still goes fairly fast, but a high life or two while you wait won't hurt ya http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif They also have a few plasma's with either the Brewers game on, or sportscenter to occupy yer time if your sick of listening to yer buddy's nonsense

Anyone remember the White Horse Inn in Madison? That was awesome but it closed like a year ago.

my sister used to waitress there in 2000-2002 i believe. I never ate there, but used to live two blocks down Henry st. from it. Seemed nice. Right next to that hippie store and across from the civic center.

If I'm going steak (which I do quite a bit) I'm going Carnevor. Eddie Martini's used to top this list for me, but Carnevor holds that spot now. Simply the best steaks I've had, you can bring in your own wine (another advantage over Martini's), and wonderful atmosphere and servers. We've brought numerous clients who visit steak houses all across the country, and each and every one has raved about Carnevor.

Pizza: I've become a Zaffiro's convert; how did I ignore it all these years? Thin crust and a PBR...heaven.

Savoy Room for speidini.

And I still love a Solly's butter burger.

Man, I'm getting hungry....

Favorites:

Cheese Corner in Viroqua for subs. Great subs, haven't tried the one in LaCrosse yet but I wouldn't think it would be all that different

For pizza I really liked Sam's in Wausau. I haven't been there in a really long time so I have no idea if it's even open anymore.

I haven't been blown away by any steak places, usually when I go out it's not for steak.

La Hacienda in Madison is/was awesome. After bar time we would go there a lot, there were always friendly with us.

Edit - forgot the worst.

I hate Country Kitchen, it doesn't matter where it is. Pretty much any chain type breakfast restaurant I dislike.

I will add my favorites from the Racine/Kenowhere area. Luigi's in K-Town is the best Italian around IMO, returned after a 10 year hiatus, same great food, same great prices. I will second the Wells Brothers recommendation of earlier, not the greatest area, but pretty good pizza. I was a big fan of Infusinos, but have heard it has gone downhill. For bakery you can't beat O&H.

I'm a big fan of Good Company in Appleton, even though I haven't been there in awhile

El Azteca is great

I actually go to El Azteca fairly often, but not by choice. I don't think it's very authentic, just your standard "American Mexican" fare. Also not a big fan of Good Company. A lot of people love that place, but I think their menu is way too large. They make a lot of different types of food, but don't do any of them really well.

Also, forgot my vote for worst.... Cracker Barrell

Oh, and a controversial paick for Best- Buffalo Wild Wings. I know a lot of people think it's over-rated, but I love wings really well done, and they fry the bleep out of them. Plus I love their choices of sauces. mmmmmm Mango Habenero.

Best Mexican in the City: Lopez Bakery - and its not even close.

Its authentic, delicious. The atmosphere is very relaxed as it is in the middle of a Mexican bakery. And after you finish your meal, you can load up on a bunch of delicious Mexican sweet breads.

I am living in Mexico, and I still miss that restaurant. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Try the gorditas made with carne asada. Yum!!! The chimichangas are also to die for.

Pizza: I've become a Zaffiro's convert; how did I ignore it all these years? Thin crust and a PBR...heaven.

Savoy Room for speidini.

Zaffiros is awesome. I meet up with my cousins there a few months back, they have some very tasty pizza. Pretty tiny place.

I thought they Savoy Room closed. Apparently I'm wrong. Pretty good food, but the owners a bit crazy! I had a friend who used to waitress there, told me about some of the crazy stories.

I forgot a few other places that I liked. Crazy Water. For being all cooked behind a bar, it's very elegant and very very good. The Social is also pretty good, but you have to be willing to try American Hip Fusion, as that's the only way I can explain it.

Jeffh: I used to work for Jakes, at the location in Wauwatosa, and part time out in Brookfield. It's transformed, thank god, since they let the younger generation run it. It was far to stuck in the old school steak house, and Jake let her daughter and husband run it. They did a great job of bringing it out of the 70s, but Jake Sr didn't like it. I think about 5 years ago Sr sold it to Jake Jr and now he's the guy that runs it. Personally I think he's a prick. But he makes pretty good food.

If you want a real treat, drive up to Kohler and go to the Immigrant Room and have the tasting menu. Back when I was married I had my anniversary there, went and had my first Sweetbread. I had no idea what it was, and when I found out I was shocked. It's hard to explain the texture, it's..... by far different.

The Palms in the 3rd Ward has fantastic food. It's a casual place, owned by the same person that owns the City Markets. Great food, laid back atmosphere. And they have paintings of monkeys on the walls. They do need to know how to spell Creme Fraiche though.. few times it was written on the board out side as Creme Fresh. Oops.

I'll have to check out Carnivore. I heard bad reviews from a friend, but she went right after they opened. Could be opening week jitters.

There are several good to great restaurants in the Milwaukee area. In my opinion, Eddie Martini's is the best all around restaurant in Milwaukee. Other notable places for steaks in order of personal preference are: Mr B's, Carnevore, Flemings, Butch's. I like Mitchell's Fish Market for seafood, but I rarely go out for seafood since its so easy to cook at home.

Other favorites are:

- Botanas and Samanos for Mexican

- Points East Pub for Wings

- Jakes Deli for Corned Beef and Pastrami

- Sammy's Red Hots for Italian Beef

- Soblemans for burgers

I am typing this from my room at the American Club and will be dining at the Horse and Plough and the Immigrant Room for the first time this week. Hopefully they live up to the hype.

Savoy Room is still kicking, although I haven't been there in a couple months. It was rumored to have closed after Sally Papia died, but ownership kept it going. We knew/know a number of the waitresses, so I've probably met your friend. Know the managers a bit also. Love to hear your stories. We've been going there since it was "Snugs" back in the 1980s.
