Lakewood goes down to Lake County 3-0 today....if the Power can pull off a win tonite, their magic # would be down to 5 with 15 games to go for the two teams! GO POWER! Need a playoff series here in what appears to be the last season for the Brewers here in WV (boo hiss)!

Not a bad A-ball debut for Wily Peralta. Had a bad fourth inning, but it's only his third start of the year, so that's okay. What happened on the inside-the-park homer that Reed Dickert gave up on the first batter he faced after relieved Peralta. Also, did Steffan Wilson get injured?

West Virginia Top 2nd

  • Steffan Wilson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Steve Brown.
  • Caleb Gindl flies out to right fielder Brandon Barnes.
  • Zelous Wheeler strikes out swinging.
  • Anderson De La Rosa flies out to left fielder Brian Pellegrini.

Lexington Bottom 2nd

  • Defensive Substitution: Curt Rindal replaces first baseman Steffan Wilson, batting 4th, playing first base.

Helena Independent Record:

Brewers rally to 8-6 win over Voyagers

Helena Independent Record

A late-game rally boosted the Helena Brewers past Great Falls Sunday and put some life into the team's late-season drive to reach the Pioneer League playoffs.

Brock Kjeldgaard hit a three-run double with two outs in the eighth, and Helena scored six runs in the final three innings to beat the Voyagers 8-6 before a crowd of 2,056 at Dehler Field.

The win moved the Brewers (29-35) to within three games of Great Falls (32-32) in their overall season records, which will decide the North Division's second playoff team if Billings finishes atop the second-half standings, as it did the first half of the season. Billings lost to Missoula 13-3 Sunday and remained one game ahead of Great Falls. Helena is five games back.

Kjeldgaard led the Brewers with four hits one day after striking out five times. Outfielder Erik Komatsu had three hits and scored twice and catcher Mike Roberts had three hits, including two doubles, to highlight the 16-hit attack. The win improved Helena to 7-7 in road games during the second half.

Helena (9-17 in the second half) and Great Falls (13-13) meet again today in Great Falls at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) and play Tuesday and Wednesday in Helena.

The Brewers are just 2-10 at home.

Great Falls scored four runs in the first inning and led 6-2 entering the seventh when the Brewers scored twice -- the second run scoring off a botched pick-off attempt, and then Kjeldgaard put the team up 7-6 with his three-run double, which tied him for the league lead with 24.

Helena added a final run in the ninth with back-to-back doubles by David Fonseca and Roberts. The Brewers hit five doubles in the game.

In addition to leading the league in doubles, Kjeldgaard, a first baseman, is second in the league in RBI with 57 and second in home runs with 13. Third baseman John Delaney scored a pair of runs and is second in the league in runs scored with 59. Komatsu raised his average to .353 and remains third in the league.

Helena Box Score

Wonderful win, down 6-2 after six innings; could Erik Komatsu skip low-A next year? Chris Dennis with a .368 OBP, on four times here; Liam Ohlmann, Trey Watten, and Brandon Rapoza combined for seven innings of one-run ball in relief...

Final: Lexington (Astros) 6, West Virginia 4

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER LOSE LEAD, THEN GAME

The West Virginia Power had a 3-0 lead through three and a half innings of Sunday night's game at Applebee's Park, but the Lexington Legends erased that deficit by scoring four times with two outs in the fourth inning and came away with a 6-4 victory.

Eric Farris began a string of three consecutive two-out singles in the top of the third. Farris stole second and scored on Logan Schafer's RBI single. Schafer scored later in the inning on Eric Fryer's two-out base hit to give the Power a 2-0 edge. West Virginia struck with two outs again in the third inning when Caleb Gindl scored on Lee Haydel's double.

Russell Dixon drove in Lexington's first run of the series on a two-out base hit in the fourth inning. Dixon scored on Brandon Barnes's double before Steve Brown gave the Legends the lead on a two-run inside the park homerun.

West Virginia tied the game at 4-4 a half inning later. With runners on first and second, Zelous Wheeler hit a groundball back to the mound which Leandro Cespedes fielded cleanly, but when he threw the ball to second base, there was nobody there to cover the bag and the ball went into center field, allowing Fryer to score. The Legends stole the lead again in the fifth inning when Dixon hit the eventual game-winning two-run homer.

Cespedes (3-6) did enough to get the victory, allowing four runs on ten hits with five strikeouts over five and two-thirds. Tony Duran (1) picked up the save after tossing three and a third scoreless innings. Reed Dickert (2-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits over two innings of work. Roque Mercedes tossed two and a third scoreless innings of relief.

The Power fell to 73-59 on the year and 41-22 in the second half with the loss. The Legends improved to 43-88 on the year and 22-40 in the second half with the win. Logan Schafer paced the Power with a 2-for-5 performance. Caleb Gindl and Lee Haydel both extended their hitting streaks to ten games. Eric Fryer reached twice to bring his on-base streak to 33 games.

The Power will continue the four-game series against Lexington Monday night. The Power will start left hander Dan Merklinger (7-9, 6.21) and the Legends will counter with left hander Jeff Icenogle (3-9, 4.31). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

What happened on the inside-the-park homer that Reed Dickert gave up on the first batter he faced after relieved Peralta.
Lexington has a feature on their web site in which they feature the play of the game. Click on the video link among the rotating feature stories with the two young lady hosts dressed in superhero garb. First will be an interview with the Venezuelan speedster who hit the home run, and that's followed at the 03:00 minute mark by the home run, which was to straightaway center. Logan Schafer found himself too close to the wall as it bounced back past him. Regardless, the kid must have been flying right out of the box, because as you're watching, you figure it will be a sliding triple.

Andy Barch's call (Eric Farris' relay throw home was high)

Click on WSWW archive of August 24th, then browse to the 01:46:00 minute mark

Lexington does this feature every year, and each year we enjoy the Kentucky accents of the hosts; of course, you guys read me all season in my Massachusetts accent, right?

Brevard County Box Score

Chris Cody does what Chris Cody has always done, really since his pro debut in the Tigers' system -- six nice innings; Zach Braddock still struggling in miscellaneous relief innings, it'd be nice to know what the situation is with Zach; Yohannis Perez 4-for-4, all singles, two RBI, two runs scored; Lou Palmisano still with designated hitter duty only, three singles; Chuck Caufield on base four times as the Manatees scored five in the 2nd inning and three in the 4th...

Arizona Box Score

A-Crew survives five errors to post a very rare road win; fine pitching, as Brewer hurlers strike out 12 with no walks; just-turned 18-year-old Canadian RHP Nick Bucci with three perfect innings, as was noted above; 19-year-old recent Florida high school RHP Damon Krestalude, who has been solid all summer despite a very undeserved 0-4 mark coming in, gets the win with two scoreless in relief; three of the miscues were by SS Carlos George, jumping his count to 33 in 42 games; 19-year-old catcher Shawn Zarraga on base four times -- his .308 / .437 / .449 line is so impressive for this league, especially for a catcher toiling in that heat...

Final: Carolina (Marlins) 6, Huntsville 5, ten innings

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Concepcion Homer Carries Mudcats to Victory

Carolina Claims Another Close One From Stars
By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Alberto Concepcion belted the game-winning home run in the tenth inning to lift Carolina to a dramatic 6-5 victory over Huntsville Sunday evening in the second of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Mudcats improved to 38-24 in the second half and trimmed their magic number to clinch the North Division title to three, while the Stars fell to 28-34 and were officially eliminated from the race. Carolina has won 12 of the 18 games between the teams with seven of the victories coming by a single run.

Steve Bray opened the tenth on the hill for Huntsville and retired the leadoff man Andy Jenkins before Concepcion jumped on an 0-2 offering and drilled his first home run since July 5 over the wall in left field. Bray drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning but was forced at second on a bunt attempt by Michael Brantley before Guilder Rodriguez bounced into a game-ending double play. Bray took the loss to drop to 1-3, while Chris Mobley earned the win to improve to 5-3.

Todd Doolittle threw a scoreless eighth inning and took a 5-1 lead into the home ninth before an error and two singles loaded the bases with one out. Chris Errecart doubled in two runs to trim the Carolina advantage to 5-3 and knocked Doolittle out of the game. Mobley came on to strike out Mike Bell before Freddy Parejo singled off the glove of a diving Chris Coghlan at third base to deliver Michael Garciaparra and Errecart to tie the game. The Stars remain winless in 42 games trailing after eight innings and have dropped ten of thirteen extra innings games.

Gaby Sanchez doubled in a run and Jenkins singled home Coghlan in a two-run first against Mike Jones, who went four frames, giving up those two hits, while walking five and fanning three. Mudcats' starter Willie Glen was perfect through four innings before Angel Salome reached on a Coghlan fielding error leading off in the fifth and held the Stars hitless through five innings.

Parejo led off the home sixth with a single, moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on a double by pitcher Donovan Hand, who collected his first hit of the year. Brantley was retired on a comebacker for the first out and Glen was replaced by Tim Wood, who fielded a Rodriguez come-backer and caught Hand in a rundown for the second out. He then retired the next four hitters in order to turn the game over to Doolittle. Glen allowed only two hits and an unearned run, while fanning four, over 5 1/3, while Wood worked a scoreless 1 2/3 innings and struck out three.

Hand threw two scoreless innings before two hits and a walk to Coghlan loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. Sanchez then cleared them with a double to make it a 5-1 game and push his RBI total for the season to 88.

The series continues Monday night with southpaw Brae Wright taking the mound against Mudcats' left-hander Graham Taylor. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Score four runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie it, only to lose another late -- this Stars' season an all-timer in frustration; 22 errors for second baseman Mike Bell is not acceptable...

Huntsville Game Log

Michael Garciaparra batted for Cole Gillespie in the 9th, as Gillespie was shaken up diving for a line drive single in the top of the 9th (left hand, left arm) -- he stayed in the game for the inning, but did not bat next time up...

Final: Nashville 7, Round Rock (Astros) 2

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Link, text follows --

Nelson, Narron Lead Sounds To Series Finale Win

NASHVILLE - Brad Nelson homered for the second straight evening and drove in four runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 7-2 victory over the Round Rock Express on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium in the finale of a five-game series.

With the victory, Nashville (58-78) secured a three-games-to-two series victory and wins in six of their nine consecutive meetings with the Express dating back to last Saturday.

Left-hander Sam Narron (9-4) earned his team-leading ninth victory of the year for Nashville by turning in his sixth quality start with the club. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four batters and walking none over six frames.

Round Rock grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Edwin Maysonet opened the contest with a single and Nick Gorneault followed with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Ex-Sound J.R. House plated Maysonet with a groundout before Gorneault scored the second run when new Nashville third baseman Mat Gamel committed a fielding error on a Ray Sadler groundball.

The Sounds responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Callix Crabbe drew a four-pitch walk from Round Rock starter Runelvys Hernandez to start the inning, moved to second on a Tony Gwynn single, and later scored on a Joe Dillon sacrifice fly. Nelson followed with a mammoth two-run home run off the light pole to the left of the batter's eye, his 18th roundtripper of the season and second in two nights against Express pitching.

AUDIO: Brad Nelson Go-Ahead HR

Nashville manufactured a run in the third to increase the lead to 4-2. Gwynn led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Dillon flyout, and scored on a Nelson groundout, which netted the Sounds first baseman his team-leading 77th RBI of the year.

Jay Gibbons increased the Sounds' cushion to 6-2 in the fifth when he belted his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot to right-center off Hernandez that careened off the top of the clubhouse building. The home run extended the outfielder's hitting streak to five games, matching his longest of the season. Gwynn, who walked to open the frame, scored his third run of the contest on the blast.

Nelson drove in his fourth run of the evening in the seventh when Gwynn scored his fourth run of the night from third on a sacrifice fly to left, making it a 7-2 contest.

Gamel got off to a rocky start to his Triple-A career for the Sounds, striking out in all four of his plate appearances (three times caught looking) and committed an error on one of two balls hit to him at the hot corner on the evening.

Nashville shortstop Chris Woodward went 0-for-4 to snap his season-best hitting streak at eight games.

Mitch Stetter (1.0 IP) and Tim Dillard (2.0 IP) followed Narron by closing out the game in scoreless fashion to continue the recent strong performances by the Nashville bullpen.

Hernandez (7-8) absorbed the loss for the Express after giving up six runs on five hits over six innings of work.

The Sounds continue their final homestand of the 2008 season on Monday when they welcome the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA-Marlins) for the 6 p.m. opener of a four-game series. Left-hander Chris Narveson (6-12, 5.14) will man the bump for Nashville to face Albuquerque southpaw Chris Seddon (9-9, 5.21).

Nashville Box Score

It would be criminal at this point if Brad Nelson doesn't get the courtesy of a September callup; Mitch Stetter and Tim Dillard are primed to return to the bigs; if the Brewers want to retain 15-game winner Sam Narron, they'll have to find a 40-man roster spot or convince Narron to once again sign a minor league free agent deal -- money can talk in those cases...

First baseman continues offensive surge in Sounds victory

By GREG SULLIVAN

Tennessean Staff Writer

A long two-run homer from first baseman Brad Nelson put Nashville ahead in the first inning Sunday night on the way to a 7-2 win over Round Rock at Greer Stadium.

Nelson had four RBIs, driving in two more runs with a groundball out in the third inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

The homer, his 18th this season, bounced off the light pole in left-center field. He also hit a homer Saturday.

"I've been feeling good lately," Nelson said. "I was trying to get more weight on my back leg. It's been working lately."

Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said he's been pleased with his team's offensive production of late. The team has averaged 7.3 runs per game in their past 10 games.

Joe Dillon added a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Prospect arrives: Infielder Mat Gamel joined the Sounds on Sunday after being promoted from Double-A Huntsville.

Gamel arrived with a .329 average, 19 home runs and 96 RBIs in 127 games with the Stars. Infielder Ozzie Chavez was sent to Huntsville after spending the entire season with Nashville. Chavez was batting .223 with three home runs and 29 RBIs.

Gamel struggled in his Triple-A debut, striking out four times and mishandling a ground ball at third base.

Fast starts: The Sounds have outscored their opponent 27-6 in the first inning over their past nine games. All nine of those games have been against Round Rock.

Zach Braddock still struggling in miscellaneous relief innings, it'd be nice to know what the situation is with Zach

I wonder if it's a way to limit innings and nurse him along. He pitched 47 innings last year, then was shut down for injuries (?elbow?). This year he's already had a stint on the DL, and he's up to 67 IP in a league higher. If that's all it is, I'm OK with it. If it's because he's hurt and trying to pitch through it, then off with someone's head. (Hey I'm a Brewer fan, I expect the bad and receive even worse)
