This is a bit old, but I didn't bother checking to see if it'd been posted here... just assumed it would have been.

We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program." -- DMB website

AP Story

"Lead singer Dave Matthews credited Moore with arranging many of his songs, which combine Cajun fiddle-playing, African-influenced rhythms and Matthews' playful but haunting voice.

The band formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, Va., when Matthews was working as a bartender. He gave a demo tape of his songs to Moore, who liked what he heard and recruited his friend and fellow jazzman Carter Beauford to play drums, and other musicians."

I'm a big fan of the group, and LeRoi was my favorite instrumentalist. I really don't know what the sound will be like without his skillful input. Just a sad, sad bit of news to me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif I hope you're in a better place, Mr. Moore.

It was extremely sad when I heard it, especially since the last news I had heard about the situation was that he was recovering well.

To answer how they sound without him, though - I saw DMB at Alpine Valley on August 10 and Jeff Coffin (of Bela Fleck and The Flecktones) was playing in LeRoi's place, and playing quite well in his stead. I don't know if that would be an option for a more permanent position, but he played very well.

Once again, extremely sad news about Moore's passing - just goes to show that anything can happen at any time in life.
