Final, Game One: St. Lucie (Mets) 2, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Game One Box Score

John Axford pitched very well, but the Manatee offense only mustered three singles and three walks in the seven innings; Brevard scored its only run in the first on a one-out bases-loaded walk to J. R. Hopf, but Chuck Caufield followed with a double play grounder; the Manatees never advanced a runner past first after that; a Yohannis Perez error and an Axford wild pitch set up an unearned gift go-ahead run in the 6th for the Mets...

Salome tearing it up, 3-3 with a HR and a stolen base and BA up to.367! He is my "prospect of the year", suspension or not. You have to remember he is coming off a horrific ankle injury and plays catcher...to me he is just incredible!http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/51c35df296437fb6eb38cd21e6d18afefd677c2.jpg

Final: West Virginia 9, Greenville (Red Sox) 1

Cline and Gindl go deep in Power win

Matt Cline and Caleb Gindl homered in the sixth inning of Saturday night's game, helping the Power pull away from the Greenville Drive with a 9-1 victory over the Drive at Fluor Field.

David Mailman drove in Greenville's only run on a two-out RBI single in the third inning. The next batter, Zach Penprase singled into right field with Mailman on second. Mailman tried to score but he was gunned out by Gindl to end the inning.

The Power scored their first two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Steffan Wilson scored on a wild pitch to tie it and Gindl scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

Eric Fryer delivered a two-out RBI single to make it a 3-1 game in the fifth inning. The Power used a four-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Gindl began the inning with his ninth homer of the season and Cline belted a three-run shot over the mini-monster in left field, his third of the season. The Power scored their final runs on RBI singles from Mike Vass and Zelous Wheeler.

Evan Anundsen (11-6) tossed seven strong innings, allowed a run on six hits and fanned four, picking up his first win since July 26th. Felix Doubront (12-8) allowed three runs on four hits over five innings and was tagged with the loss. Evan Frederickson provided two scoreless innings of relief.

The Power improved to 69-55 on the year and 37-18 in the second half with the win. The Drive fell to 64-60 on the year and 24-30 in the second half with the loss. Fryer and Gindl paced the Power with three hits apiece. Wheeler reached four times on a pair of walks, a triple and a base hit. Eight Power players reached safely. West Virginia gained a game on Lakewood, giving them a two-game lead.

The Power will continue the four-game series against Greenville Sunday afternoon. The Power will start left hander Lucas Luetge (1-1, 2.95) and the Drive will counter with left hander Jose Capellan (3-4, 3.97) The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM (3:00 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

This is the Evan Anundsen we know and love, 12 ground ball outs in his seven stellar innings; Evan Frederickson has been a bit better in smaller portions as he acclimates himself to pro ball -- he did walk two and throw two more wild pitches; Eric Fryer inching in on the .350 mark again; Caleb Gindl with two doubles and a home run, still on that Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader high; this team very easy to root for...

Final: Nashville 11, Round Rock (Astros) 4

Heether Slam Keys Big Night At Plate In 11-4 Win

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds matched their season high with 20 hits, including an Adam Heether grand slam, in an 11-4 victory over the Round Rock Express on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond in the opener of a four-game series.

The Sounds (53-75) - who previously rapped out 20 hits on August 4 at Fresno - recorded their fifth straight road victory. Every starting position player recorded a knock, led by three-hit efforts from Heether, Joe Dillon, and Chris Woodward.

The Nashville offense came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, plating five runs in each of the first two innings to send Round Rock starter Ron Chiavacci to the showers.

The Sounds opened the top of the first with four straight hits off Chiavacci, including a Dillon RBI single followed by Brad Nelson's team-leading 34th double of the year that also plated a run. Jay Gibbons, Woodward, and Carlos Corporan also drove in runs for Nashville in the opening five-run frame.

A grand slam by Heether, the infielder's 11th roundtripper of the year and the Sounds' fifth slam of 2008, highlighted the five-run Nashville second.

Round Rock got a pair of runs back in the fourth against Sounds starter Nic Ungs on a pair of one-out RBI singles from Danny Klassen and Chris Johnson.

The Sounds increased their advantage to 11-2 in the fifth with an unearned run against former Nashville hurler Chad Paronto. Tony Gwynn reached on a fielding error by first baseman Mark Saccomanno and later scored on a Nelson RBI single.

The Express made it an 11-4 contest with a two-run rally against Sounds reliever Erasmo Ramirez in the bottom of the seventh. Center fielder Yordany Ramirez greeted the left-hander with a leadoff solo homer, his 10th of the year. Later in the frame, Ray Sadler delivered a two-out RBI single to score J.R. Towles from second.

Ungs (2-2) earned the victory after allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five batters over his five innings of work for Nashville. The right-hander improved to 5-1 over his last eight outings, split between the Sounds and Double-A Huntsville.

Chiavacci (5-5) absorbed the loss for the Express after surrendering 10 runs on 12 hits in only two innings of work.

The teams continue their series with a 6:05 p.m. CT meeting on Sunday evening. Left-hander Troy Cate (2-2, 4.86) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Round Rock southpaw Josh Muecke (7-11, 4.78).

Nashville Box Score

You have to love baseball -- 20 hits for this Nashville crew? You never know when you head out to the ballpark or tune into a game what awaits you; scoreless innings for Luis Pena and Tim Dillard to close it out, Pena allowed two baserunners but we'll take it; it was a night to hack, Brad Nelson the Sounds' only walk drawn...

I was almost laughed off the board last year for saying Salome was in my top 5. {It may have been 2 years ago}

I feel good about my choice. It's hard to have him above Escobar, but he might be #2 in my eyes. He'd be a top guy regardless of position, and he might well end up as a catcher in the bigs.

Well I would sure hope so, where else is he going to play? DH?

Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 8, Huntsville 7

Huntsville Site game Summary:

Lookouts Leap to Big Lead and Hang on to Win

Stars Valiant Comeback Falls Just Short
By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Danny Dorn's grand slam punctuated an eight-run second inning, as Chattanooga held on for an 8-7 win over Huntsville Saturday night in the last of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Lookouts won twice in the series to improve to 23-32 in the second half, while the Stars dropped to 26-29 in the half and 67-58 overall. Huntsville leads the season series 12 games to eight.

The Stars grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an Alcides Escobar run-scoring groundout and a home run by Angel Salome, who had his fourth multiple hit game of the series. However, the lead was short-lived, as the Lookouts posted the single biggest scoring frame of the season against the Stars in the next half inning.

Eddy Rodriguez doubled home two runs, starting pitcher Camilo Vazquez singled home two and Dorn then jumped on the first pitch he saw from Alex Periard to launch his 18th home run of the season and second grand slam. Tonys Gutierrez, who started the rally with a leadoff single, delivered another base hit that knocked Periard out of the game after he recorded just four outs. He suffered the loss to drop to 1-3 after yielding eight hits and walking a pair.

Vazquez could only make it through three innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while walking two and striking out two. He gave up a run in the third and was helped out when Escobar was picked off at third base with the sacks full to end the inning. Lee Tabor allowed a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth against Michael Hyrnio trimmed the visitors lead to 8-6.

Mat Gamel's home run off of Ramon Geronimo in the seventh made it a one-run game and the Stars had runners at the corners with two outs before pinch-hitter Mike Bell fanned to end the frame. Joe Valentine came on to retire all six hitters he faced to earn his second save of the series and keep the Stars winless in 39 games trailing after the eighth.

Patrick Ryan, Robert Hinton, Omar Aguilar and Steve Bray kept the Looks blanked on four hits the rest of the way and extended the bullpen's streak to 13 innings without giving up an earned run over the last four games.

The Stars begin a five-game series Monday night in Birmingham with right-hander Jeremy Jeffress taking the mound against Barons' right-hander Kyle McCulloch. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Yikes, that's a horrendous baserunning error on Alcides' Escobar's part, not sure we've ever read of that happening before; do you remember July's "Organizational Pitcher of the Year?" thread? Alex Periard's candidacy is taking a hit with his struggles in adjusting to AA. David Welch, anyone? Still Evan Anundsen? It's wide open now, and that may not be a good thing -- yes, depth, but relatively ordinary depth...

Huntsville Game Log

Looks like Omar Aguilar may be figuring AA out a bit, it took a while for him, too -- it's the biggest jump of them all...

Final: Orem (Angels) 6, Helena 1

Owlz breeze by Brewers 6-1

By CURT SYNNESS - Helena Independent Record

The Orem Owlz posted their 13th straight victory Saturday at Kindrick Legion Field, 6-1 over the Helena Brewers, establishing a new team record for consecutive wins.

The Owlz were paced by Roberto Lopez on offense, a trio of pitchers who gave up just six hits, and their usual solid glove-work in the field.

The Southern Division leading Owlz (15-4 second half, 40-17 overall) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After Helena tied it up 1-1 in the third, Lopez - the league's leading hitter - led off the fourth frame with a single. Next Luis Jiminez singled, Donato Giovanatto reached on an error, and Lopez scored on a Ryan Groth RBI fielder's choice.

The Owlz took a 3-1 lead after Jiminez crossed the plate. Orem added one in the fifth to go up 4-1, and then scored twice more in the seventh, on a two-run homer by Lopez.

Owlz pitchers Jeff "Buddy" Boshers started and went five innings for the victory. He permitted one run and five hits, striking out three, while improving his record to 3-0.

Cephas Howard and Steven Geltz combined to relieve the final four scoreless stanzas. In two innings, Geltz did not allow a hit and fanned five Brewers.

Lopez's 2-for-4 effort raised his average to a cool .394. He scored twice, with two RBIs. Perez and Jiminez also had two hits each. The visitors are now 6-0 against the Capital City club this year.

Helena's lone run came in the third inning, when Brock Kjeldgaard brought Cutter Dykstra home with a base rip back up the middle.

The Brewers threatened again in the fifth. With two outs, Dykstra and Erik Komatsu both singled. A wild pitch placed runners on second and third, but the hosts were unable to score. Helena, which left nine men on base, also stranded two runners in the seventh. John Delaney and Dykstra finished with a pair of base knocks apiece.

Brew Crew twirler Rico Salmon (2-2) went five innings and took the defeat. He gave up five hits and four runs, two of them unearned. Salmon whiffed four hitters.

At one point, he retired seven men in a row, getting the last out of the first inning, and then setting the sides down in order in the second and third stanzas. In the third, he whiffed two-of-three batters.

Nick Tyson replaced Salmon in the sixth frame and went the rest of the way.

The Brewers stand 6-13 in the second half, and 26-31 overall. The four-game series closes out today, as the two clubs battle again at 4:05 PM (5:05 Central) at Kindrick Field.

Final, Game Two: St. Lucie (Mets) 7, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Game Two Box Score

Starter Rafael Lluberes was fine in his four innings; relievers Josh Wahpepah and Travis Wendte were hit hard late, surrendering six runs and nine hits between them over the final two innings; OF Scott Houin's promotion from West Virginia earlier this summer was questioned by some -- basically, we explained it kept together a strong Power club while providing the Manatees with an extra outfielder, but Houin has struggled in high-A as well (4-for-34, combined .517 OPS on the season in 174 AB's); just five Brevard hits, one a Yohannis Perez triple...

Condescending, TC.

I regularly read your blog, as we tend to share similar opinions on politics, but I find TC's comment no more consdescending than the neverending stream of "I told you so!". It would be different you'd ever post how you were wrong about a prospect, an opinion, or anything for that matter but I haven't seen that in my many years here on the site. Sometimes people need to be put in their place... a find it somewhat humorous that you continually walk the fine the line with condescendation, but are the first one to post about how the Mods abuse this and that... You tend to post here exactly like you do in your blog, except here you rarely link supporting material and tend to take an antagonistic stance on most topics you contribute to.

As a neutral observer, you earn everything you get.
