High School Pride: Your colors, mascot, preps

jaybird2001wi

It's kind of funny this topic came up. I'm from Jefferson. We were the Eagles, and our colors were maroon and gold. I was a freshman when our football team went undefeated and won the 1991 Division 3 State title.

Anyway, I was going through some old video tapes at home and I found a couple different news clips that I was in. One was from WKOW Channel 27 in Madison and the other was CBS 6 in Milwaukee. When I was a junior, the study hall monitor in my school hired 3 students to murder her husband. The case went unsolved until September of my senior year. When the arrest was made, I jumped in front of every video camera I could in order to get on the news. I gave a couple of interviews. Looking back on it, it was extremely irresponsible considering someone was murdered. When it was happening, all I could think of was, "LOOK, I'M ON THE NEWS!!"

Anyway, they turned the whole incident into an NBC minseries called "Seduced by Madness: The Diane Borchardt Story." It starred some really big names. Ann Margret, Peter Coyote, Freddy Rodriguez (Rico on Six Feet Under) and a guy named Tobey Maguire.

Dominican, Wisco, Regis, St. Joe's.....WISAA, ftw!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Even though the WIAA was/is superior, it was fun going to all those old WISAA basketball tournaments back in the day.

Yeah, I miss WISAA and the old Metro conference. There were some great battles in basketball.

Kiel High School class of 2006.

Colors are purple and white.

Nickname is the Raiders.

The most famous person that I can think of to graduate from Kiel was Tony Gries who walked onto the Marquette basketball team for two years. He did manage to play a minute at the end of the Final Four game that one year. Other than that, I'm pretty sure there were only local legends to graduate from there, like a kid nicknamed Bacon http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

You might recognize our most famous alum http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Girl's basketball team also had a run of 12 consecutive Coulee Conference championships that I believe was just snapped last season. We were pretty spoiled with good athletic teams every season and good academics.

Marquette University High School Hilltoppers.

I still wish MU would have gone back to that nickname. I graduated in '99. I miss WISAA, because of the rivalries, too. I think I really hated the disdain we got from most of the public schools in the conference. I grew up in public schools, then went to a private high school and college. Now I teach in a public school. But I'll never get why so many public school students/teachers/parents have deep-rooted resentment towards private schools. I don't get it, because I've known so many genuine people that strongly believe in community issues and care about the world that come from both private and public schools (although probably private school folks generally felt moreso that they could make an impact and change the world for the better), yet many ardent public school supporters will take every chance they can to criticize private schools. It really frustrates me hearing this, especially as a teacher.

I graduated from Oak Creek in 2006. I actually got cut from the freshman baseball team, who the hell gets cut from a freshman sport? I ended up not feeling too badly cause they were the Summer league state champs '03-'05. I ended up playing tennis the next 3 years and it was lot of fun and we ended up pretty good (relatively) my senior year. Of course once we played the Brookfield's/Tosa's we got smoked. Brian Calhoun, Travis Beckham and Tony Butler all went there. Ben Walker graduated from there like 10 years before me and was on the Creighton basketball teams that made the second round of the NCAA Tourney around 2000.

PaulRigdon,

What year did you graduate from Muskego. I grew up in Muskego and would have graduated from there in '96, but we moved to Vegas in the middle of my Sophmore year 2/1/94. Just curious. I too remember the Arrowhead game. My cousin was the starting QB for Arrowhead that year so while I was rooting for Muskego, I also had ties to Arrowhead.

New Berlin Eisenhower Lions class of 04. I can't say I had too much school pride, but I went to plenty of the sporting events.

Someone will have to tell me if they know anyone famous who graduated from there because I sure can't think of anyone.

I went to a public school and my football team played your school in 99' and I didn't have disdain for you school. Some of your people did have that I am better then you mentality. And when your football has kicking nets and almost looks like a semi-pro football team there is gonna be some disdain. Also when your fans throw stuff at our band as they are on the other side of the track waiting to do the halftime show then ovbviously there is gonna be some animosity

I went to Westosha Central in Paddock Lake, WI, and graduated in 98'. We were the falcons and our colors were maroon and silver. Famous alumni from there are Misty Davis, who is a former playboy playmate, current ultimate fighter Ben Rothwell, who I went to high school with. Also Daryl Maday, who is a good friend of my sister, was drafted by the Brewers and didn't sign and is now playing w/ a Giants minor league affiliate.

Our volleyball team is always really good, our baseball team won state a couple of years ago, but other than that our athletics aren't that good. I played soccer, and it was coed my freshman and sophomore year. Its hard to get college scouts out to watch a coed high school soccer team.

Viroqua High School class of '03. Colors were black and orange, and when I was there we were the Blackhawks. But now I think they're simply: Hawks.

No famous alumni really, an astronaut, but no sports players.

To help round out the Metro Conference - I went to Waukesha Catholic Memorial, graduated in '97.

Blue and Gold

Crusaders

We pretty much dominated most of the sports while I was in school, though the tennis and soccer teams I was on didn't win any championships. A lot of kids each year go on to play d-1 sports.

Famous Alumni -

Leslie Osbourn - US Women's National Soccer Team

Dan Needles - Channel 12 sports and the D-List

Matt Katula - Baltimore Ravens

Of Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay. The most recent example of someone people might know is Deron Washington, who played for Virginia Tech basketball the past few years and was drafted by the Pistions this year. The best thing about his connection with Notre Dame is that he didn't even crack the rotation. The most embarrassing part of that is that its not because he wasn't good....I think the coach just somehow failed to notice how good he was. I would guess he averaged less than 2 ppg his junior year. He came into one game later in the year and pulled a two footed/two handed baseline drive dunk over people out of nowhere. He transferred soon after that. Here is my favorite Deron moment (especially since I hate Duke):

and then there's this:

Yeah, I can see how you would miss him http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif

What, nobody else from the city?

Milwaukee Marshall. Class of 1982.

Scarlett Red and Columbia Blue

Eagles.

I remember the school song, and that's about it:

Hey look us over, we're Marshall High,
We are the Eagles ever flying high.
We've got the spirit, we've got the pep.
We've got the team that's always right in step.

There's probably more to the song, but that's all I remember after 26 years.

I think Marshall might be a specialty school now. Or a prison.

Oshkosh West High School, 1996.

Claims to fame, back to back Division 1 Boys basketball champs in 05-06 and 06-07.

Famous alumni; I have no idea, but with a school of an enrollment of over 1500 I would think we could claim something better than this guy.

I think it's been referred to in this thread already, but I'm an alumna of Monroe High School, home of the Cheesemakers, wearing crimson and white. I am mildly distressed that a Google image search no longer turns up a picture of our little cheesemaker guy, perched atop a wheel of Swiss cheese.

While I was in high school (class of 1984, which was Orwell-tastic), Monroe was infamously bad at high-profile sports like football and basketball. The boys' basketball team did enjoy an undefeated season and single-class WIAA championship in 1964-65.

Since my graduation, Monroe turned on the athletic-success switch and won a bunch of football titles, two or three girls' basketball championships (including 2008!) and a boys' basketball title in 2007. I think the softball team also won a state title earlier this decade. Monroe has also traditionally been strong (for its size, anyway) in tennis and track/cross country.

As for famous alumni, the only one I can think of offhand is former Seattle Seahawks owner Ken Behring.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
