Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film "Shaft," has died, sheriff's officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday.

Relatives found Hayes, 65, unconscious in his home next to a still-running treadmill, said Steve Shular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

So what happens to Dianetics followers when they die? Do they go to some planet or something?

Terrible news. Hayes was one of the all-time great soul singers/songwriters. Check out some of the songs he wrote for Sam & Dave with David Porter. In addition to his great songwriting, he was a good pianist (along with Booker T. & The MGs, he was part of Albert King's group for the great album "Born Under A Bad Sign"). He also played on many other sessions for Stax.

Some of his records released under his own name are classics. Hot Buttered Soul is one of my favorite albums and Shaft, though it's mostly instrumental, is also a great album. (As an aside, the Bar-Kays really came into their own on Shaft, they perform some of the greatest instrumental soul/rock ever on that album, only a couple years after most of their members died in that plane crash that killed Otis Redding.)

Hayes also had a connection to sports, being a part owner of the Memphis Tams of the ABA for a couple years in the 1970's. In addition to that, he used to wear a vest made of gold chains, how can you not love a guy who did that? I'm sad he's dead.
