Official Olympics Thread

The first half of USA/China was very entertaining, especially after watching the 2004 debacle. China was able to stick around early because they're on fire from 3 point range (something like 7 of 12), but the US started pulling away when they applied the full court press -- lots of bad, high arcing Chinese passes are being picked off by LeBron and Kobe. Dwight Howard's been a beast so far, too, and Yao only has about 5 points.

The USA-China game felt like a 1v16 or 2v15 game in an NCAA tournament. Underdog team starts out on fire from 3 point range, keeping it close for the first couple of mins. It then quickly gets out of hand and you end up with the type of result that everybody expected.

IIRC, we are 1-0-1, the Netherlands are 0-0-2, and Nigeria is 1-0-1. If we TIE Nigeria it might come down to goals. Since the announcers w ere saying we might be able to advance with a tie maybe we beat Japan by more than Nigeria?

We have the same goal differential as the Nigerians but we have scored more goals than they have which is the next tie breaker so all we need is a tie or a Japan tie/win. It is going to be tough though with Bradley and Adu both being out due to yellow card accumulation.

Total boneheaded play by Michael Bradley to get a yellow card for absolutely no reason. It shows the stupidity of USA Soccer that Balboa would agree that it's wise to save 5 seconds in exchange for a yellow card. All he had to do is kick to a teammate and play keep away. They would have ended up saving far more time. With Adu and Bradley out against Nigeria I give them about a 5% chance of getting a draw which they will need to advance.

I agree but I think that losing Adu hurts more than losing Bradley. Szetela can slot into that D mid position and hold his own but we really do not have much attacking creativity or force with Adu out. I think that you will see Altidore finally getting that start that he deserves and he will play with McBride up top.

Edit- and that is hard for me to say too because even though not a lot of people agree with me- I am a big baby Bradley supporter.

Not trying to get political at all, and I am not a fan of him, but I am actually impressed with Bush being so prevelant at the games. Security there must be absolutely lock down tight with all of the high profile world leaders out and about.

You're avatar does look a little political blanco not that I care.

The Mens 4x100 had one of the most exciting finishes I have ever seen in which the Americans overcame a large lead by the French to pull it out. This after the French claimed they would crush the Americans.

My wife and I were both competitive swimmers, so I enjoy being able to watch swimming during the summer games. The men's 4x100 relay finish was just stunning; Lezak's final leg, especially the last 25m, actually had me yelling and cheering, which is rare. All that being said, I realize most people find watching swimming very boring.

Even more incredible is that the Top 5 teams in that relay all broke the previous world record, and the US broke the record by about 4 seconds. Easily the best moment of the Olympics so far, IMO, and it'll be hard to beat it (although the 100m Dash this year should be incredibly exciting with Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, and Tyson Gay all legitimate threats to break the world record). Even though it's against the Olympic spirit, a little smack talk always makes things more interesting. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

The men's 4X100 free relay (swimming) just concluded and the US had just about the greatest comeback ever against the trash talking French. That was a lot of fun to watch. Both teams just crushed the world record.

I believe the quote from the French before the meet was "We will crush them [the US]", but it's the US taking home the gold now. Unbelievable.

Unfortunately, as exciting as that 4X100 relay win was for the USA (enjoy your silver, France) it followed an equally disheartening 2nd place finish in the women's 400 free by Katie Hoff. Full body length over the world record holder from Italy and she got out touched by a swimmer from the UK.

That was amazing. The exact quote from Alain Bernard, the anchor of the French team who swam the last leg was "The Americans? We're going to smash them. That's what we came here for." The announcers in the beginning didn't think the U.S. was going to win and the last 100m said "I just don't think they can do it." In the last 50m "U.S. trying to hang on to second. They should still get the silver medal."

After the U.S. won the announcer says "Who's talking now?"

Great job by all four swimmers and we have to give props to former Nicolet High School swimmer Garrett Weber-Gale. Jason Lezak's relay split was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. One of the top Olympic moments I can remember.

Sounds like that British swimmer had a heck of an effort.

4x100 was nuts. I love swim relays. Reminiscent of Sydney (except closer, and 5 seconds faster).

Changing gears, is Field Hockey (currently on USA) the least ergonomic sport in existence? It just looks painful.
