Hey all if you get a chance listen live to the Manatees and the Devil Rays. Of course you'll have to listen to the Devil Rays radio network, but a familiar voice. It's me your old pal Kirk Agius, the voice of the Manatees in 2007.

Great to see some familiar faces on the Manatee roster.

Thanks for listening.

Jeffress is an enigma to me... he can K 11 guys and give up 6 runs, and he'll walk 4 and K 2 and give none... where's the logic in that?

edit. His final line 6IP, 1H, 5BB, 2K, 0ER

Jeffress is an enigma to me
After looking through the Brewer's minor league box scores tonight, I logged on to Brewerfan.net with the intention of posting that "Jeffress is really turning into a big of an enigma."

So yeah, I agree with you.

Final: Brevard County 3, Vero Beach (Rays) 0

Brevard County Box Score

Jeremy Jeffress gets eight ground ball outs in six innings, strikes out only two while walking five as noted above, but with one hit and no runs allowed, it certainly seems we're seeing the attempted evolution of a pitcher, and it's fascinating to follow -- Jeffress has walked 23 in his last six starts covering 26.2 innings, but there are so many ways to dissect his numbers; lest we forget, kudos to RHP Mike McCendon and LHP Casey Baron for completing the shutout on the road; Charlie Fermaint homered to begin the game, and Taylor Green hit a two-run line drive home run in the 4th...

Brevard County Game Log

A line drive double play aided Jeffress in his 6th and final inning, but other than that, he was never in any real trouble...

Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 4, West Virginia 3

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

SHOREBIRDS BEAT POWER ON SINGLES NIGHT

The West Virginia Power and Delmarva Shorebirds combined to hit 18 singles on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park, as the Shorebirds scored twice with two outs in the fourth inning to defeat the Power 4-3 and earned a series split.

Delmarva scored in the first inning for the fourth night in a row. Tyler Henson reached on a fielders choice to score Ryan Adams, giving Delmarva a 1-0 lead. The Power scored all of their runs in the second inning on back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from Matt Cline, Lee Haydel and Eric Farris.

Delmarva cut the lead to a run in the third inning on Kieron Pope's run-scoring single. The Shorebirds took the lead back in the fourth with a pair of two out hits and never looked back. Adams singled in the tying run and scoring the eventual game winning run on Joe Mahoney's single. The Power left the tying run in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning.

Nathan Nery (3-3) allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings and earned the victory. Mick Mattaliano (27) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save. Evan Anundsen (10-5) allowed four runs on seven hits, walked four and fanned three over four innings and was tagged with the loss.

The Power fell to 62-52 on the year and 30-15 in the second half with the loss. The Shorebirds improved to 63-51 on the year and 25-20 in the second half with the win. Farris and Haydel paced the Power with two hits apiece. Eric Fryer singled in the first inning to extend his hitting to 11 games. Caleb Gindl went 0-for-4 ending his 26 game on-base streak.

The Power are off on Wednesday, but will begin a four-game series against the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. The Power will start left hander Lucas Luetge (0-1, 3.86) and the Crawdads will counter with right hander Duke Welker (3-9, 5.01). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

RHP's Roque Mercedes and Corey Frerichs combined for five innings of scoreless relief; walks will kill you, unless you're Jeremy Jeffress -- walks have been a big issue suddenly and unexpectedly for Evan Anundsen in his last three starts...

West Virginia Game Log

Bad luck in the Power 5th, as Caleb Gindl lined into a double play with the bases loaded; leadoff man Zelous Wheeler on 2nd base in the Power 6th, but he never advanced even to third...

Final: Huntsville 4, Mississippi (Braves) 2

Huntsville Press Release:

Bullpen Blanks Braves to Preserve Stars' Win

STARS CLAIM THIRD SERIES IN SECOND HALF

Chris Errecart hit the game-winning home run and the bullpen threw three shutout frames afterwards to preserve Huntsville's 4-2 win Tuesday night in the last of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars won the series three games to two to improve to 21-24 in the second half and claim the season series 11-4, while the Braves dipped to 29-16 in the second half and saw their lead in the South Division trimmed to two and a half games after Montgomery beat West Tenn. The Stars won a series for a third time in nine tries in the second half, having split four and dropped two.

Cole Gillespie's fielder's choice grounder in the first inning chased home Michael Brantley with the game's first run, as the Stars scored in their first at-bat in all five games. Gillespie was left stranded at third in the fourth with one out when Errecart grounded out and Lorenzo Cain flied out.

Alcides Escobar doubled down the right field line with one out in the fifth to score Martin Maldonado to make it 2-0 and push the pitcher Alex Periard to third. The Stars could not cash in again, as Mat Gamel struck out and Gillespie flied out. Deunte Heath went five frames for the Braves, giving up five hits, walking two and striking out four.

Reid Gorecki led off the sixth with a single, stole second and moved to third on a ground ball out before he did not score on Jordan Schafer's ground out to first. However, the base-running mistake was erased when Van Pope belted a two-run home run to tie the game. Periard retired the next hitter and finished his six inning stint allowing seven hits, walking three and striking out a pair. He earned his first double-A win and moved to 1-2.

Paul Bush took over for Heath and fanned Mike Bell to open the home sixth before Errecart belted a long ball to break a 13 at-bat hitless streak and put the Stars back on top. Cain' sacrifice fly in the eighth inning added an insurance marker for Huntsville, who scored more than three runs for just a third time in the last 16 games.

Patrick Ryan worked around a leadoff walk to throw a scoreless seventh inning, David Johnson did the same in the eighth and Juan Sandoval threw a scoreless ninth after issuing a leadoff walk and yielding a two-out infield single. He struck out pinch-hitter Kala Ka'aihue to end the game and earn his 15th save.

The Stars open a five-game series with West Tenn Wednesday evening with right-hander Nic Ungs taking the mound against Diamond Jaxx' right-hander Joe Woerman. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Ten ground ball outs for Alex Periard in his third and most impressive AA start; with the exception of Matt LaPorta's departure (now Lorenzo Cain in the lineup), the "Big Eight" we talked about all season is only missing Angel Salome, apparently back soon; Cole Gillespie picks his spots, now 14-for-15 in stolen bases; former Huntsville catcher J.C. Boscan picks off Periard at second base, that's not fair; the Stars turned five double plays -- Periard working his usual ground ball magic helped, but Mat Gamel committed two errors, his first in quite a while (one fielding, one throwing)...

Final: Billings (Reds) 7, Helena 5

Helena Box Score

It's something that the Reds aren't a big league powerhouse -- their Pioneer League team seems to rock every year; Brewers were down 7-1 at the 7th inning stretch; lesson learned by Rico Salmon and others tonight -- walks usually are very bad; Brewers drew 11 walks of their own but strand 12 overall; Mike Vass his 7th home run, a three-run shot, as his average inches up as well...

Corey Kemp struck out with the bases loaded to end the 8th...

Brewers' Comeback Falls Short Again

For the second night in a row, the Helena Brewers tried to make a late-inning comeback but couldn't quite get it done. The Billings Mustangs downed the Brewers 7-5 as they led from the fourth inning on, scoring in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Helena came back with three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth but couldn't quite catch the division leading Mustangs.

Michael Vass had a home run and a double and Brock Kjeldgaard also had a double for Helena. Rico Salmon picks up his first loss of the season, giving up five runs in 4.1 innings. He struck out four Mustang hitters while walking five and surrendered three hits. Andrew Bowman picks up his second win of the season as he only gave up one run on three hits and struck out six Brewers. Randall Linebaugh collected his fourth save of the season as he shut down the Brewers in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two.

The Brewers drop to 23-24 on the season and 3-5 in the second half. The Mustangs improve to 31-16 and 7-1 in the second half as they take 3-out-of-4 from Helena.

Saw the game. Random thoughts.

The one hit Jeffress gave up was a slicing flair that caught the left field foul line with a lefty at bat. Only one ball hit squarely off him tonight and it was foul but not hit very far. Jeffress was in the dirt atleast 12 times tonight. He was also high and wide quite a few times where Lucroy lunged just to catch them. I was most impressed by Lucroy not letting even one get past him. Lucroy had a pefect through to second on a steal attempt tonight. Perez was playing second base and dove to catch a liner then doubled off the runner at first. Both great plays. A clean ground ball play by Green at third, do not know if he has the range to play second at the MLB level. Brewer looks physically impressive but struck out looking twice. Walked off with his head down both times. Not sure if he can hit the curveball. The Manatees look to have pretty good plate discipline, not alot of free swinging like the Milwaukee club. Jeffress fastball was just that and he mixed in a couple of nice curves that broke well when he didn't spike it a la Turnbow. Needs polish but you can see the raw speed of his fastball. Both Manatees homers cleared the fence by maybe 10-20 feet. Greens was a line drive but it did not look like he fully followed through. Green puts a bat on the ball every time up. Again, odd to see after watching how wild swings by the MLB team all year.McClendon had some decent stuff. Mixed it up. Kept hitters off balance and good control, a little awkward of a delivery. Baron was a little like Shouse, got the job done.

Green might not be as athletic as Cirillo, but he sure does hit like him, he's probably more of .280 guy than a .300 guy, but 13 HRs in the FSL is pretty impressive. He also has more walks than strike outs, with 1 more walk... but hey it's still a great ratio.. he's walking and striking out 1 per 7 ABs. The only thing I've noticed is that his doubles total is way down this year, thus his OPS is down despite a similar HR total as last year.

1B has been a bit of organizational black hole since Hart was moved and Fielder went to Milwaukee, but I find Kjeldgaard intriguing. I wish his OBP was about 40 points higher, but what's not to like about a young man that couldn't make it out of the same league as a pitcher now playing very well in a different role. I wonder if pitching, and thinking about the game as a pitcher helps him at the plate?

Cain in CF again and Brantley in LF... boo! If Cain wouldn't mix 0 for 8 streaks around his good hitting performances he'd be outstanding. He's not raking, but he's holding his own early, and he's had some outstanding games already.

So many hitting lines to be pleased with this year... now if only the pitchers would pick up the slack some, it would be nice if the top end of the system was balanced with hitters and pitchers. Though the truth is probably more along the lines that the team needs pitching more than the hitting at this point. Adding Scarpetta, Lintz, Odorizzi, Bowman, Frederickson, Luetge, Wooten, Adams, Nieves etc to already intriguing young list of arms is exciting. I've said it before but what a great time to be a fan of the Brewer organization.

Question though, why hasn't Romanski made an appearance as a pitcher? There isn't a strange rule where if he plays as a position player he's not eligible to pitch is there? If he's unable to pitch why let him hit once in a while just so he's doing something? I don't remember him getting injured and web search came up empty, his MiLB profile also lists him as active.

Brewers left stranded

By CURT SYNNESS - Helena Independent Record

Twelve men left on base. That was the Helena Brewers' major issue at Kindrick Legion Field Tuesday, as the home team lost to the Billings Mustangs, 7-5.

The Mustangs, who improved to 31-16 overall and lead the Northern Division with an 8-1 second-half record, were led by the pitching of starter Andrew Bowman, and the bats of Carlos Mendez and Byron Wiley.

The left-handed throwing Bowman posted the win, working five innings and giving up three hits and one run, while striking out six. Randall Linebaugh pitched the ninth frame to collect the save.

Wiley went 2-for-4, with a double and an RBI, and Mendez drove in two runs, stroking a single and a two-bagger. Jordan Wideman was 2-for-3.

The visitors outhit Helena 9-6 and left eight runners stranded, four fewer than the Capital City group.

The Brewers were down 7-1 after 7 1/2 innings, but showed some grit by rallying for three runs in the seventh stanza and one in the eighth to get within two.

Their big inning was the seventh, when Chris Dennis and Corey Kemp walked. With men on first and second and two out, Mike Vass put a charge into a 2-2 pitch, driving it well over the wall in left-center for a three-run homer. The ball traveled an estimated 400 feet, bouncing off the scoreboard and eliciting a booming cheer from the crowd of 1,300. Vass finished the game with a pair of base knocks.

The Brew Crew's two tallies in the first and the eighth frames were produced by John Delaney, Dennis, Brock Kjeldgaard, Jose Duran and Erik Miller.

The locals twice ended innings with the bases loaded, in the sixth and eighth frames.

Rico Salmon started on the bump and went 4.1 innings while being tabbed with the defeat. He was relieved by Nick Tyson and Garrett Sherrill.

The Brewers fell to 3-6 for the second half, and 23-24 overall. They next take to the road, facing the Orem Owlz in Utah on Thursday.

Power (for once) can't capitalize

By Tommy R. Atkinson

Charleston Gazette Staff writer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Nowadays, West Virginia Power manager Jeff Isom is just as surprised as most fans when the team fails to come through in clutch situations.

Tuesday was one of those rare nights when the Power failed to produce and lost to the Delmarva (Md.) Shorebirds 4-3 in a South Atlantic League matchup. A paid crowd of 2,092 attended at Appalachian Power Park.

The Power's lead over the second-place Lakewood (N.J.) BlueClaws remained at two games in the Northern Division. Tuesday night, the BlueClaws (28-17) lost at Greensboro 8-7 in 15 innings.

After falling behind 4-3 in the fourth, the Power (30-15) had three straight innings with opportunities to either knot the game or take the lead and couldn't come through.

"You can't rely on it every night,'' said Isom. "We had a couple of opportunities in the middle of the game.

"We just couldn't come through with that big hit when we needed it. Little things cost us this ballgame, but I thought [Delmarva's] bullpen came in and did a very good job against us.''

West Virginia had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Delmarva starting pitcher Nathan Nery gloved Caleb Gindl's line drive up the middle then threw to first base to double up Steffan Wilson to end the inning.

The Power's Zelous Wheeler led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch but was left stranded. In the seventh, West Virginia's Logan Schafer singled with one out and stole second, but Eric Fryer flied out to the warning track and Wilson struck out. The Power went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings.

Relievers Roque Mercedes and Corey Frerichs kept West Virginia in the game, shutting out Delmarva (25-20) on two hits in the final five innings. Power starter Evan Anundesen (10-5) took the loss, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits in four innings.

Shorebirds relievers Cliff Flagello and Mick Mattaliano, who earned his 27th save, blanked the Power in the final four innings, giving up just a single.

West Virginia took a 3-1 lead in the second inning on three straight run-scoring singles with two outs. Delmarva turned the tables on the Power, scoring three runs with two outs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-3 edge. Joe Mahoney's two-out RBI single gave the Shorebirds the lead for good at 4-3 in the fourth.

For the most part during the season's second half, the Power has been finding ways to win. West Virginia rallied from an 8-0 deficit Saturday to beat Delmarva, and the Power rallied to take a 9-4 victory over the Shorebirds Monday.

"It's been somebody different every night,'' Isom said. "That's what we've been doing this whole second half. We get a couple guys on and somebody was coming up with a big hit. It's going to happen where it doesn't happen.''

Power points

Delmarva catcher Brendan Monaghan fell over the railing in front of the Power dugout chasing a foul pop and went head over heels. Luckily, several West Virginia coaches and players were on hand to catch Monaghan, who was upside down for a few moments ... Eric Farris and Lee Haydel were the only Power players with multiple hits, pounding out two apiece ... The teams combined for 18 hits, all singles ... Fryer extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the first ...The Power is off today before beginning a four-game home series against Hickory at 7:05 PM Thursday (6:05 Central).

Huntsville Times:

Stars win 4-2

Recently promoted pitcher Alex Periard put a miserable outing his last time out behind him and tossed six strong innings to get the win for Huntsville.

The Stars' big blow came in the sixth when first baseman Chris Errecart belted the game-winning home run off Paul Bush to give Huntsville a series victory over South Division leader Mississippi and send them on the road on a good note.

"This last week, I think I've put too much pressure on myself," Errecart said. "The last couple of games, I'd started getting down on myself. Hitting that home run felt like 1,000 pounds had been taken off my back. This is a great win."

Manager Don Money said Angel Salome will return from the disabled list today.

Final: Nashville 5, Fresno (Giants) 4, ten innings

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Beat Fresno Again In Extras, 5-4

FRESNO, Calif. - The Nashville Sounds recorded their second straight extra-inning win on Tuesday evening at Chukchansi Park, besting the Fresno Grizzlies by a 5-4 count in 10 innings.

With the win, Nashville (47-70) secured its third winning road trip of the year and extended its current winning streak to three games, matching the club's longest effort of the season.

Hernan Iribarren opened the tenth with a single off Grizzlies reliever Dan Griffin and moved to second when Callix Crabbe walked. After Ryan Sadowski took over on the hill for Fresno, Tony Gwynn legged out a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Joe Dillon followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly to center that plated Iribarren for a 4-3 Nashville lead.

After a strikeout by pinch-hitter Jay Gibbons and an intentional walk issued to Laynce Nix that reloaded the bases, Sadowski hit Adam Heether with a pitch to force home Crabbe to increase the advantage to 5-3.

Randy Choate took the hill in the bottom of the tenth for the Sounds and allowed a leadoff single to Travis Ishikawa. Catcher Vinny Rottino threw the Fresno first baseman out as he attempted to steal second, which turned out to be a very important play. Scott McClain followed with a solo homer to left, his 23rd roundtripper of the year, which pulled the Grizzlies within 5-4.

Justin Leone followed with a double that put the potential tying run in scoring position with only one out. Choate induced a groundout from Ben Copeland then a game-ending popout from pinch-hitter Guillermo Rodriguez to secure the win and lock down his second save.

Mitch Stetter (1-3) was awarded his first win for Nashville following one scoreless inning of relief work, while Griffin (0-1) was dealt the loss for Fresno after being charged with two runs in his one-plus inning of action.

The extra-inning contest was the 13th of the year (5-8) and fifth in the last 12 games for Nashville.

Fresno took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Sounds starter Chris Narveson. McClain plated Clay Timpner with an RBI groundout before Leone delivered a two-out run-scoring double to left.

The teams exchanged runs in the second. Nix led off the second with a double and scored on Chris Woodward's RBI single to halve the lead to 2-1 before ex-Sound Steve Hammond helped his own cause in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double that brought home Brian Horwitz for a 3-1 Grizzlies lead. Narveson worked out of further damage in the frame after Fresno loaded the bases with one out, inducing consecutive popouts from Ishikawa and McClain.

The Sounds tied the contest in the third with a pair of runs off Hammond. Crabbe led off with a single against Hammond then scored when Gwynn followed with a triple to right, bring the score to 3-2. Two batters later, Brad Nelson knotted the score with an RBI infield single.

Neither team scored again until the decisive tenth inning.

The teams wrap up the series with a 9:05 p.m. CT finale on Wednesday evening. Right-hander Mark DiFelice (4-1, 3.53) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Fresno southpaw Pat Misch (6-3, 5.35).
