Aug. / Sept. Transaction Thread -- Latest: From Helena to W.V.

Super 2 has nothing to do with how long a player is under team control, just how much money they will get. If Gamel helps the team get to the playoffs, it will be worth it (maybe not financially in this year, but in a franchise sense).
I understand that, the money was my point, I'd rather keep players as cheap as possible, adding an extra 3-4 mil in the last year of Arby is pretty significant. If he's the opening day 3B next year then it's moot, if they take a Braun type track with him and he has to spend an extra month in AAA to avoid super 2 status then I'm on the fence pending the impact his ABs have this season.

You said that you want Gamel as long as possible. You think that the Brewers will be forced to trade Gamel away sometime in the future because he may be making a few million more in one season?

I know I'm naive, but I really don't think Braun was in AAA because of money. I really think they wanted him to work on his defense out of the major league spotlight. If Gamel opens in AAA next year, I don't think it will be because of money either, I think it will be that he really struggled for a signficant time period in the 2nd half of this year, and they want to prove that he can do it at AAA before he is given a spot in the majors. I just don't see this Brewers team putting money ahead of competition.

St. Paul OF Among League Leaders in Five Offensive Categories

DURHAM, NC - The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball announced today that St. Paul Saints OF Brent Krause (pictured) has been purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers. Krause will be sent to Double A Huntsville.

Krause batted .317 for St. Paul with 19 home runs, 56 RBI and 112 hits in 93 games. He also scored 71 runs, collected 25 doubles and had a slugging percentage of .555. The resident of Andover, MN finished tied for first in extra base hits (45), tied for third home runs, fourth in slugging percentage, tied for fourth in doubles and tied for eighth in batting average. Krause was just recently named to the 2008 Postseason All-Star Team and was a starter for the North Division team in the 2008 American All-Star Game in St. Paul on July 22.

The 26-year-old becomes the 11th league player sold to a major league organization since the beginning of the 2008 season.

It has been a long trip for Brent Krause whose baseball career has taken him from high school in Anoka to the St. Paul Saints and several Upper Midwest baseball clubs in between.

Krause, who signed with the St. Paul Saints just over a week ago, began his playing days in the Anoka program. The 2000 graduate went on to play college ball at Jamestown College in North Dakota, where he set virtually every hitting record on the books for the Jimmies.

Krause then bounced around the Northern League. He spent time in Schaumburg, Sioux City, and eventually Fargo-Morehead when he found a home.

"I didn't really know what to expect from professional ball," said Krause. "It was a good experience once I got Fargo. I knew a lot of people in the area and had some friends from college there."

It didn't take long for Krause to fit in.

During that 2005 season Krause earned rookie of the year honors in the Northern League hitting .327 with 14 home runs and 51 runs batted in for the Redhhawks. During that season the Minnesota Twins began showing interest in the slugging outfielder.

"Once the [Fargo-Moorhead] season was over they [the Twins] contacted me again and we signed a contract," said Krause who headed to Florida for spring training in 2006.

While there, however, Krause pulled his oblique muscle that caused him to miss 11 games and ultimately led to his release. Krause subsequently returned to Fargo Morehead where he continued to put up solid numbers in hopes of a return to affiliated minor league baseball.

While this did lead to a few workouts this spring in Florida, Krause ultimately signed with the St. Paul Saints now of the American Association.

"It will be nice to come home and play in front of the home town fans," he said of his deal with the Saints.

During the off season Krause spent time in San Andres, Mexico as apart of the Liga Invernam Vera Cruz Ana Winter League. Since his return to Minnesota, Krause has been working with Corey Eckhoff at Velocity Sports Performance in Champlin on his speed and base running.

"Working in Mexico was different. The pitchers there rely more on off speed pitches so you have to change your approach at the plate," said Krause.

Now back in Minnesota with the Saints, Krause is looking for one more chance to catch on with an affiliated minor league team.

"Consistency will be the key," he says. Regardless of his key, his hometown fans can now check him out in St. Paul.

The Atlantic League schedule extends deep into September, while the American Association season is over. Atlantic League teams will often acquire top players who have ended their seasons in one of the five other independent leagues, and players will seek trades if they wish to extend their seasons.

As for the trade taking place and the Brewers jumping in, when these indy league signings happen, they happen fast.

Tennessean:

On the move: Nashville pitcher Mark DiFelice was activated from the disabled list prior to Wednesday's game. DiFelice retired all six hitters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings.

The right-hander went on the DL after suffering a back injury during his Aug. 12 start.

To make room for newcomer Brent Krause, Huntsville officially placed Lorenzo Cain on its DL.

Nashville RHP Richie Gardner designated for assignment.

If he clears waivers, he would have to accept a minor league assignment for 2009 with the Brewers.

At least we think so. When you're designated more than once (as Gardner was before by the Reds when the Brewers claimed him), you have the option of choosing minor league free agency. But because he never was actually designated off a 40-man roster with the Brewer waiver claim, this should be considered his first removal, thus no free agent option.

Journal-Sentinel:

Brewers minor-league outfielder Cole Gillespie will have surgery today to repair a fractured sesamoid bone in his right big toe. Foot specialist Richard Marks will perform the surgery, and Gillespie expects to be ready for the start of next spring training. Gillespie, a third-round pick out of Oregon State in 2006, hit .281 with 14 home runs and 79 RBI in 131 games with Class AA Huntsville this season.

As most of you have seen in this Major League Forum thread, catcher Lou Palmisano was designated for assignment to make room for Mike Lamb.

Should Palmisano clear waivers, the Brewers would still own his rights through 2009.

If Palmisano were to impress next year, he could be re-added to the 40-man late next season, and thus the Brewers could control him for more than the traditional seven seasons, as has been the case with Brad Nelson.

Palmisano has been named to the Arizona Fall League taxi squad (two games a week), and should see his first action behind the plate this season in that league.

Unless he impressed some team with his velocity late in the year when he was OK out of the bullpen, Gardner should return.

Someone might take a flyer on Lou, especially since they can send him back through waivers and hope he clears either right away or when teams set their offseason 40's. Catching is very weak, and Lou at least doesn't embarrass himself at the plate like many C's.

The main issue with Lou though is his injury. It was first reported that it was similar to Yo's and Yo came back -- Lou didn't and it turned out to be more serious. A leg injury to a catcher is cause for concern IMO and my guess is he stays with the Brewers because of that and he missed valuable time in terms of developing.

Post-season paperwork reported by Baseball America:

Reinstated from DL: RHP Chad Robinson, RHP Mark Rogers, RHP Derrick Turnbow, C Eric Munson, 3B Taylor Green, OF Lorenzo Cain, OF Stephen Chapman

Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Chris Narveson, 1B Ned Yost

So Ned Yost was officially on the Inactive List while coaching in Helena this summer.

I'll work towards tidying up these loose ends on our Brewerfan Player Index Page and Team Pages over the next couple of days, thanks. I know it's only paperwork, but several players who were on the respective DL's were not included in this report (Edgar Trejo, Jose Romero, Brett Whiteside, others). Normally I'd say the list only includes players from high-A and up, but then why is Chad Robinson listed.

Again, it's just paperwork, though.
