Motion sickness on amusement rides - any suggestions?

Patrick425

I'm going to Great America with my wife and son tomorrow. Over the last 2 or 3 years my son has become a little more brave when it comes to going on rides. In particular, he really enjoys rides that spin like the Tilt-a-whirl. I use to love rides like that and had no problem with them. However, I have found over the last 2 or 3 years as we go to church festival or any place else with rides like that, I can only handle those rides about 2 times, and usually in the middle of the 2nd time, I feel like I'm about to lose it. I come off the ride feeling sick to my stomach and a slightly disoriented. Not sure when this happened to me, but it's frustrating because I want to be able to enjoy these rides with my family, and as I said, I use to love these rides. Normally I don't get motion sickness and do not have a problem with cars, planes, etc. Anyone have any suggestions? Something I can eat, not eat, anything?

The flip side to this is that I like rides with big drops. My wife does not like them at all and my son is not really thrilled about them either. So, while I'm going to enjoy the day with my family tomorrow, finding rides that we all enjoy is a bit of a challenge.

Ok, hate to answer my own question, but did a little more digging. Found another thread on another site where some guy seems to have the same exact issue as me:

Looks like I'll try Bonine.

If anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate it.

I get motion sick - not the about-to-lose-my-lunch sick - but more dizzy, disoriented, nauseated in my head sick. I can't watch movies with lots of quick camera shots/camera movement. I can't really be the passenger in a car. It's awful.

Last time I went to Great America, I took Dramamine and I did ok. Not great, but ok. By the end of the day, the boyfriend was riding a few coasters again on his own.

Good luck. Let us know if anything works!

So are you even going on the bigger roller coasters while you are there?

Because if you are Batman and Iron Wolf would probably be bad choices as they make me sick and I love roller coasters and rarely get sick.

No, because my wife and son would not go with me on those rides, and I won't do a ride by myself. But I would if one of them would go with me. I don't think I would get sick, but who knows.

I've never quite fathomed the appeal of standing in line for an hour and paying money for the ability to feel nauseous, but each to their own, I was at both games this week and I still feel sick!

My family swears by Dramamine also.

I didn't actually see him eat it since I was getting the boat ready and he took it before he came out. I'll have to ask him how much and how he took it. I know you can buy ginger tablets so maybe he took it that way. What I do know is he took it to see of it works and it did.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Ginger root is a highly effective anti-emetic and sucking on crystallized ginger or sipping ginger tea can help to relieve the nausea.[18] A teaspoon of ground (powdered) ginger root has been proven to be as effective in preventing motion sickness as popular OTC chemicals, but without the drowsiness and sleepiness that is a common side reaction to dimenhydrinate or diphenhydrinate.--Wiki

I prefer the "I don't like 'em, so I stay off" cure.

Doesn't it suck, getting older? I used to have a season pass to Great America, went all the time. Never got sick on anything, even went on rides right after eating. Now that my son is old enough to like some of the bigger rides, I have to pace myself. I can still do them, but I get a bit dizzy if the ride is too long or I do too many in a row.

The only things that really gets to me (and always has) are movies like Blair Witch and first person video games. But I'm fine with motion simulators and roller coasters. Go figure.

I am weird . I got sick on King Chaos but that is it . Raging Bull scares the daylights out of me but thats because of that huge drop in the beginning and the feeling of not being strapped in very well.

The Tilt a Whirl and Scrambler are my rides at the fair. i find it hard to get takers to ride along on those.
