best hitter on the market to help out the Crew

Recommended Posts

I vote for CF, I really do. Mike has been bad and defesively he hasn't been awesome like he was supposed to be. I wish they would ship him out.

He's extremely close to his career norm OPS... Seems to be just as advertised. Yeah, he botched that play in the lights, but his range has been a huge asset.

I think Brain Giles is the best fit among realistic options, though I doubt he plays an acceptable CF anymore. He would be a nice upgrade from Kapler. It would suck to cut Gabe though, he did his best to earn his spot. I just think he's not that useful on this specific team and Giles would be. Cameron's career OPS is 80 points worse against righties than it is against lefties, so I think it might be useful to have a guy who can play against righties a time or two per week. Giles' career OPS against righties is almost 1.000, so he would be a nice fit, imo. Also, Giles has extensive experience at all 3 outfield spots and has a career OBP 111 points better than his BA, which is excellent.

A guy I would like, but would be really REALLY bad on Defense would be...

Aubrey Huff. Don't kill me this.

He can play 3rd (just not really good defensivly)

Great suggestion. He's a far more complete hitter than Branyan and he's been only slightly below average at 3B (.945 lifetime FP) despite the reputation that he can't field.

The guy I'd really like though is Ryan Doumit from the Pirates. Maybe a Weeks for Doumit deal could get done. Heck I'd send Kendall back to Pittsburgh too.

The offense is struggling right now, especially with runners in scoring position, but honestly, I don't think there's much in the way of upgrades out there. I fully expect some of these hitters to get hot soon. Outside of maybe a relief pitcher, I think they should stand pat.

No Brian they are not suddenly going to get hot I'm afraid. We're 4 months into the season and the list of Brewer offensive underachievers is a long one: Weeks, Cameron, Hall, Kendall. Two of those four were Melvin's key FA signees last offseason. I just don't think Cameron or Kendall have anything left in their tank. Cameron's old (35 in the post PED era is once again old) and Kendall's been abused by Yost. Both were bad signings and if you can correct them now, they should.

I agree with Brian Giles. The lineup doesn't have that one guy that consistently works counts and gets on base, and last I checked Giles had more BBs than Ks. I know Ks don't mean anything, and that's not the argument I'm trying to make, but again, the Brewers don't have a hitter like this in their lineup.

Plus, he hits both RHPs and LHPs, so it's not like he had to be a strict platoon player. Finding regular playing time for him obviously would be difficult, but I think it's clear that Corey Hart could use a few days off here and there to get him back on track.

I don't know what he'd cost, but what about a guy like David DeJesus? He's a left handed hitter who can play all 3 OF positions, and lead off. I don't know how him and Cam would co-exist though. But I just think getting a guy like DeJesus would help this team tremendously by adding a lefty bat, being able to move Weeks down in the order, and adding a guy with a .360ish obp.

How can Kendall be underacheiving? I certainly wasn't expecting a whole lot of offense out of him.

If we could turn Weeks, Hall, and a prospect into a solid 3rd baseman I would be pretty happy. I have no idea who that might be. Perhaps Ian Stewart? COL has garbage at 2nd and I would probably take Hall over Tavarez in CF.

How about Weeks and Hall + a Top 15-20 Brewers prospect for Ryan Zimmerman, he is having a down year but who can blame him considering the lineup they have?

That's a great idea! I wonder if KC is shopping him. Been one of my favorite underrated players for years. He'd be a very good option for next year's starting CF'er. He's actually signed through 2011.

Weeks has turned it up in July. He is batting .250 with a .775 OPS. His OBP is a little low at .341 but his SLG is way up showing that some of those liners are falling into place.

Look at Rickie's linedrive % and compare it to his BABIP. His BABIP is very low and you should expect it to rise, and I think it has some this month.

I can't believe I'm defending Weeks here, please don't throw tomato's. I'm just saying the Rickie Weeks trend is a positive one right now.

On the flip side, sure Weeks is playing better now, so why not try to see what you can get for him in a trade now? Because he will mosst certainly start to dissappoint us again. Trade him while he's hot!!!! Or at least not has bad as he usually is

a .775 OPS is "hot" in July? thats not terrible, but its not above mediocre either

A .775 OPS from Weeks (which is still lower than his 2007 performance) would place him in the upper third of 2B across MLB, so I'd say it's above mediocre. As it is, his season long OPS still places him above the aggregrate OPS of 10 other teams' 2B when grouped by position.

I think he's worth keeping.
