Yankees may give up Melky for Brian Bannister

I found an article through MLBtraderumors.com from the kansas city star, by Bob Dutton. In the article Dutton says that if the Washburn deal does not work out for the yankees that they may look to get Bannister, and Dutton says that Melky Cabrera is the most likely candidate to be coming back.

Cabrera has not been having a very good year, he has a line of .250/.306/.351, but he still has the ability to be an all-star. Last year from June through august he showed what he can do hitting .325/.375/.482. Brian Bannister does not strike people out, does not get a ton of groundballs, and has average stuff. This year he has a 5.40 ERA, he is pitching better than that, but still at he does not have a ton of upside. Seems like a low reward high risk deal for the yankees.

Melky cabrera is far from a potential allstar; 4th or 5th outfielder is more like it. Somehow if you play for the yankees you get at least twice as highly valued as you should and melky is just another example of that. If Melky was a Brewers starting outfielder everyone would be screaming for a replacement.

Yes Bannister is the guy that is really into sabrmatics. As for Melky, the reason alot of people have hope that he will one day be a very good center fielder is that he has shown over long stretches that he is capable of being very, very good in each of the three seasons he has had any significant time in the big leagues. Melky's biggest problem is consistency, he will go a couple of months where he is terrible, and does not look like he belongs on the field, and then he will go a month where he is an on base machine, and slapping doubles all over the place.

If Melky can ever just be somewhat consistent he will go to all-star games. I am not saying he is a hall of fame talent, he isnt, but he has the potential to hit 300 , with 70-80 walks, and a alot of doubles, and triples. That is definatley good enough for an all-star bid. I am not saying he will definatley do that, but there is a chance, and Bannister just has no upside, and is having a very bad year as well, so what is the point.

According to John Heyman, the mariners are asking for Melky Cabrera, and Brett Gardner, for Jarrod Washburn. The Yankees are willing to eat all of his remaining salary. If Lee Pelekoudas, Seattle's interim GM can pull off both Cabrera, Gardner, and not eat any of Washburns salary he should be given a 10 year contract, and named executive of the year.

The Yankees aren't stupid, no matter how much people wish they were, so I can't see that deal happening. It's not like Cabrera and Gardner are anything special, but Washburn's on-field value is not nearly as high as his salary. I can see why Seattle would be trying to hold out for a useful part, but if they let that blow the deal and are stuck with Washburn, that's going to turn out just as bad as taking Sexson off of waivers last August when some team claimed him did.

I heard it put on the radio today, "The Yankees are basically doing the Mariners a favor if they eat Washburn's contract, so they are going to do the trade on their own terms, not Seattle's." I can't see why they would do that _and_ give up one of their big trading chips. I do agree that Melky is overrated due to being a Yankee, though.
