Manny Ramirez on the trading block

The Red Sox have grown tired of Manny, who has sat out a couple of games that he probably could have played. Theo Epstein was quoted in an article by Ken Rosenthal, as saying "We'd be open to (a trade),We've called around. We've been open to it for 5 1/2 years now." It seems to me that they are shopping him a little more aggresivley than the past couple of years, since he will be gone next year, unless they pick up his option, which seems unlikely.

The problem is according to Rosenthal, their is not a great fit. The Red Sox are not going to move him unless they are getting someone who can help them now. The only teams who could give them an outfielder anywhere near Manny Ramirez caliber are probably not looking to add salary, the pirates are not going to give up Bay, the Rockies are not giving up Holliday for him. Ramirez also has 10-and 5 rights so he can block any trade, so the team would have to give him a new deal for him to agree to it.

Manny will not agree to a deal unless he is given a new contract by the team that trades for him. I really do not see the Brewers being able to afford the kind of money that Manny will be looking for, and I do not think it would be a good idea to give him the money he wants either.

Or...the Sox can just put him on waivers again and have him claimed by the Yanks, and just let him go. Be done with the whole charade. I've always been a fan of Manny, but lately, it's just gotten to be too much. Let Manny be Manny in the Bronx, with their "Yankee Code." That would be quite the soap opera, both pre- and post-trade/claim. Would it work? I'm pretty sure 10-5 is superceded by being put on waivers and then "released" to the claimant. There is but one logical destination for him this year, unless the Rays decide to take a $10mil chance on a DH (which, given their attendance dearth, can't be that plausible).

you could sign any FA hitter for that price and not have to give up any good players. plus you could get a guy who's a little younger. boy, to think how bad his LF defense would be if he lost a step or two...

Every year the same thing. Manny doesn't really want to go and the Sox don't have another impact bat. They may let him go in the offseason, since he's in decline and always was a lousy fielder even in his best day.

The Mets would take him and is salary, but they wouldn't give back major talent, so I doubt the Sox do it.

The D-backs were rumored but according to Dbacks.com writer Steve Gilbert, a deal is highly unlikely. This is not really news, since any deal involving him is highly unlikely. The Mets have done all but say they do not want him on the team. Pat Gillick the Phillies GM denies interest siting the fact that they have no room for him on the team. The dodgers according to MLBtraderumors, the dodgers would deal for him if the Red Sox take Andruw Jones back.

I'm surprised no one has commented on the latest Manny buzz...

sounds like this will actually happen, per mlbtraderumors

Manny to the Marlins

Bay and Grabow to Red Sox

Prospects (plus Hermida) to Pirates

Looks like the Pirates could get quite a haul for Bay (3 prospects plus Hermida)

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

I honestly think this would be a great move for the Marlins. I don't really see what they have to lose. They've homered their way to success so far this year, why not add another very potent bat right in the middle, especially if Boston would pick up a large chunk of Manny's remaining salary. They have just as good of a shot as anyone else in that division, but offense isn't really the issue. They're 7th in the NL in OPS, but 14th in team ERA and have a -31 run differential. They definitely need pitching more, but at least Manny the Marlin would be entertaining.

That was one point they made on XM yesterday afternoon...you wonder if Manny going to the Marlins would upset some of their young guys who aren't making (relatively) much, yet. I don't know though...you'd think players would appecriate a big bat coming to their team to help them win something, though.
