When to hold a coach responsible for the conduct of their players

This isn't meant to be directed at a specific team or sport, but i am interested in the topic after learning from an ESPN (Outside the Lines) report that 163 Penn State Football Players have been arrested in the past six years. 46 of these arrests resulted in convictions. I would think that this makes Florida State (Bobby Bowden) and Penn State (Joe Paterno) in a league of their own about being scumbag coaches who can't control their players, or worse, actively recruit low character kids and cover up for them when they are in trouble with the law.

Wisconsin Fotoball has had a few hiccups (no where near 163), but i'm very proud that the Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers (Johnny Jolly not withstanding), Wisconsin Basketball, Wisconsin Hockey, UW-Whitewater Football etc have been able to be very successful with high character kids.

Honestly, when was the last time a Milwaukee Brewer was in trouble with the Law? Or one of Bo Ryan's players? That is a remarkable feat and speaks of the character/coaching ability in those organizations.

I used to like JoePA, but Penn State has been mediocre (football) since joining the Big Ten, has stunk up every other sport, and now is bringing some very bad press to the Big Ten. I say boot them out of the league. They would fit in perfectly with the ACC or SEC.

PSU has been a powerhouse in women's hoops and are the reigning NCAA champ in volleyball. But Portland is out as coach and when old man Ross retires, that run will end as well (hopefully).

Otherwise yes, not very competitive. Send the unwanted step-brother back to the Atlantic Ten.

Boo Wade choked a girl a few years ago, and an incoming freshman in Ryan's first or second year (something McGee?) got a felony for something, but I don't think anything's really happened since then.

Yeah, Wade came to mind for me right away as well. Other than some pretty major academic issues a couple of seasons ago with some major players (Steimsma, Landry, and Williams) though, Bo's teams have been very clean for the last few years.

the incident with the mcgee kid happened over the summer before the kid was enrolled. to their credit, his position on the team (and i believe the university) was eliminated rather quickly after the incident

Not to get to get too off topic, but 3TO was arrested in the offseason for domestice violence after beating his wife.

I don't think a coach can control what happens outside the lines. All he can do is try and positively influence his players on the field and hope it translate to good off the field behavior.

Well, in the college world, he has complete control over the types of kids that he's bringing in to the program and the kids themselves. One might argue that if Penn State/FSU are having such behavioral issues, that they're bringing in the wrong players in the first place.

A segment of a Cleveland.com article discussing 3TO's arrest just to clarify the situation:

Pepper Pike police Sgt. Joe Mariola said police were called to the parking lot of the Woodmere police station Jan. 31 after a Woodmere officer found Jill Branyan sitting alone in her car. She was crying.

The officer determined that the alleged assault took place in Pepper Pike.

She was taken back to the Pepper Pike police station, where Mariola said she gave a complete statement.

The couple had gone to The Cowboy restaurant in Bainbridge and apparently argued on the way home, Mariola said.

At some point, Russell Branyan, who was driving, reached over and grabbed his wife's mouth to stop her from talking. The force of the grab caused her to develop a swollen lip and some bleeding.

Mariola called Branyan at his home to tell him police wanted to speak with him.
