7/27/08 Astros (Wolf) at Brewers (Suppan): 1:05 CDT

Hey look, a pitcher is clearly getting rocked and Cecil Cooper -- a guy who's been getting roasted by the Houston media for most of the season -- has enough common sense to take him out of the game even though he's leading 8-4 and there's only 1 out in the 5th inning.

Suppan went 7 innings and gave up 3 runs last time out. Yeah he had a terrible start but he is not as bad as some are making him out to be

His four starts before that were awful, and today's start was awful. He's obviously not a 9 ERA pitcher, but he's not all that close to good either.

He'll have his good outings, yes, but he'll also have outings like today, when it's a manager's job to realize when the wheels are about to fall off and get him out of there instead of watching the wheels fall off, the car run out of gas, and the metal rust off the car prior to doing anything.

Yost just can't be defended on this one. Its almost like he feels he owes it to the pitcher to give him a chance to work out of it and manages accordingly.

Why does he preach accountability and then let Suppan in there to lose a game that could be won?

I completely agree with this. Soup has some bad outings, but he should not have been in there to look that bad today. He should have left the game early than that. He is not a great pitcher but he is not as bad as people are making him out to be.

Haurdricourt is roasting Ned in his game blog.

The Brewers then fail to get an out on a bunt by Wolf, which loads the bases. Suppan finally gets an out on Matsui's grounder to first but Erstad scores on the play. Tejada then hits a smash to Weeks that he allows to get through for an error, with two runs scoring to put Houston ahead, 5-4.

Seth McClung just started warming up in the bullpen with Tejada at the plate. What took so long to get somebody up is beyond me.

A single to right by Berkman continues the carnage. Lee flies out to center but Blum crushes his second homer of the game to right -- a three-run blast that makes it 8-4.

Where the heck is Ned Yost? Why is he allowing Suppan to take this beating? How much evidence does he need that the guy has nothing?

It is absolutely unbelievable to me that Yost allowed Suppan to give up seven runs. With the Cubs losing, the Brewers could take over first place but they probably just gave the game away.

Braun leads off the bottom of the inning with a single and Hart singles to left with one down. Cecil Cooper comes out and replaces Wolf with Chris Sampson. Nice to see one of the managers realizes when his pitcher is done.

Still can't hit with RISP.

What are the odds refuses to talk about Suppan's implosion in the post-game press conference, but instead throws everyone else under the bus by saying something like "We just couldn't score enough runs today, we missed some plays in the field we should've made, etc."?

So now Yost probably brings Villy in, and instead of double switching Kapler out for Cameron he'll let Villy pitch only one inning and pinch hit for him in the 6th, burning through the bullpen faster than if they had simply pulled Suppan last inning.

or, he could do this
