2008 Olympics

bullox

Since we aren't that far away at this point, I figured I'd go ahead and make a thread for the Olympics this year.

One thing standing out right now - Michael Redd's 6-8 shooting tonight (against Canada in an exhibition), all on 3 pointers. I really think he could be a key cog in the process of getting the Americans the gold in basketball. I hope he keeps it up in that role. He could really step up and give the US team what they haven't had in recent years - a deep shooting specialist.

Am I the only person that doesn't anticipate watching 1 minutes of the Olympics unless its highlights on ESPN?

I doubt I'll watch any either. I like the winter Olympics (because of hockey), but there really isn't anything in the summer Olympics that I care to watch.

Despite my indifference, I hope all of our athletes perform well.

The Olympics mean everything else takes a backseat. With the way the Brewers are playing this time around, it's going to be tough but I'm sure there's a way to fit everything in.

When do they even start? All I'm really interested in is the softball and basketball.

August 8th, I only know that cause of the whole "08-08-08" advertisements.

I'm a bigger fan of the Winter Olympics too, but the Summer ones have some cool events. It was sweet last time when Michael Phelps owned everyone in all those different races, and that 18 year old Czech kid beat Federer.

there are certain events i enjoy, but i much prefer the winter olympics. Ill make an effort to watch swimming, softball, baseball, and basketball but thats about it. The largest problem with the Olympics is that Ill know all the results before I see them on TV.

they actually changed the format of some events so they can be live in american prime time...namely swimming. swimming finals are being held in the morning in china, basically unheard of in major swimming competitions.

Just a reminder that first round pick Lawrie is on the Canadian Olympic team, which should be interesting to watch as well. Not sure what amount of playing time he will get, as he is by far the youngest player on the team. Only top Mariners prospect Saunders and top Indians prospect Weglarz are under 23 on the team besides Lawrie, otherwise all these players are veteran minor leaguers or semi-retired major leaguers like Rheal Cormier.

For those in North Carolina, the Canadian Olympic team will be playing the US Olympic team all next weekend in exhibition games at the Durham Bulls stadium.

I will watch the Olympics in bits and pieces. How is the huge time difference affecting broadcasts by the way? I usually like to watch the opening ceremonies as well. I have a feeling the olympics will be overshadowed by some crazy goings on in Bejiing though. Don't know why but all the talk about bad air quality and emergeny lock downs make me think that something bad is going to happen

The Winter Olympics do not interest me one bit. I don't think I've watched more than 2 minutes of Winter Olympics coverage in my life. I love the Summer Olympics though (minus the gymnastics). Probably because I am a track guy, but I also like the swimming and I'll be interested to watch the men's basketball team to see how they do this year.

If the Summer Olympics had its own version of the biathlon, I'd be more inclined to watch it. Instead of skis and guns... roller blades and guns maybe?

That and the bobsled/luge are the only reason I watch the Winter Olympics, so barring any sudden (and awesome) change of event scheduling for Beijing, I'll catch some overnight water polo action but that's about it. Or maybe if they get Tiesto to do the DJing for the opening ceremony again.

I love the Olympics. I'm really going to be overloaded with sports come August. Olympics and it's sports, Brewers in pennant race, Packer season starting... My head is going to explode.

I am in the same camp. I just can't bring myself to care. If nothing else interesting is on, I may watch bits and pieces here and there; but I don't follow the individual athletes and don't care if the USA wins the most medals or not (call me unpatriotic, but I just don't think it means a lot in 2008).

There are a couple big story lines

Can Phelps win like a bazillion gold medals?

Does the 80 year old swimmer have a chance?

Is the basketball team actually going to win this year?

Will we make it through the whole olympics without an American getting busted for doping?

Becky Hammon on the Russian team, whats up with that?

Will Brett Favre show up for opening ceremonies?

If Brett doesn't show will Rodgers successfully carry the torch?

Will Russell lead the Americans to victory in the javelin, hammer throw, shot put, marathon, general awesomeness, and synchronized swimming?

I really enjoy the men's track and field and men's basketball ( the international rules make for a better game, IMO ). I'll watch USA baseball team as well.

8 is the number of good fortune and luck in Chinese culture. For the Chinese, 08-08-08 is a most auspicious date for big events like the opening day of the Olympics, opening day of new business premises, and the opening day of marriage.

Funny, that was me four years ago with a newborn. It was the most I've ever watched. I don't anticipate watching any of it this year.
