playstation 2

I've been somewhat interested in getting a new video game system. I don't play much and when I do it will be pretty much all sports games. Due to not playing it much and the ridiculous costs of the new systems, I was thinking of getting a PS2 due to it being much cheaper. My concern is that as soon as I pick one up they will stop making new games for the system and I will be stuck. Does anyone here have any clue on if they plan on making new games for the PS2 for the foreseeable future or are their plans to stop making new games soon?

I thought about the PSP as well, but I think I'd like a system that is not handheld. For $125 or whatever they are now, the PS2 is cheap enough for me, I just thought it was likely that the new games would stop coming soon. Maybe I should just hold out until Christmas and hope for a PS3 price decrease or for Santa to bring me one http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

The ps3 is starting to take out the backwards compatibility. They said that the ps2 is still going strong and they plan on keeping games coming.

To clarify, the version of the 80 GB PS3 that is currently available (including the MGS4 limited edition), has software-based backwards compatability. This is the same kind of BC that the XBox 360 has....meaning it works with most of the games from the respective console's previous generations, but not all of them. The current 40 GB PS2, and the upcoming 80 GB version (which will eventually be the only available version of the PS3) do not have any backwards compatability. Some of the older versions of the PS3 - the 20GB and 60 GB models (the one I have) - included the PS2 hardware within the PS3.

In terms of console support, I would still expect the PS2 to receive versions of the big games (e.g. Madden) for maybe another year. In June, the PS2 sales were still ~ 85% of the XBox 360....so the system keeps selling, based largely to the backlog of games already available on the console. There may be one or two holdout titles that opt for PS2 instead of PS3 (Persona 4 being the only one I can name....and that's quite niche.), but virtually all major developers have shifted their focus to the next-gen consoles.

my PS2 collects dust. the nice thing about PS2 games now is that they're super cheap. if you don't play video games much, then what's the point of getting the newest and bestest game that comes out? with only a slightly older console, you have the opportunity to search out reviews of the absolute best versions of sports games and get the best-playing ones for really cheap.

Ya, I don't think games will be coming out for much longer, but the good news is that PS2 has an extensive list of already great games you could get for pretty cheap, new or used. If you've never played a lot of them, it would still be pretty worthwhile to play them now if you're looking for a money saving option, IMO. Of course, if you mostly only play sports games, its a bit of a different story, but I could list out some must play games on the PS2.

Heck, I still pull out God of War and play it from time to time honestly.

After I graduated from college and got into the "real world", my video game playing diminished a whole lot. Actually, after I got married, I got a PS2, as my wife thought then I could have my video games, and we'd have a DVD player for our 2nd TV. I've got a few sports games that I bought used from GameStop, so whenever I need a bit of a stress reliever, I'll do that. I guess I just have to be a bit more intentional about it. Especially before (whenever it happens) kids come along.
