Official Silver Lining Thread

Even after all of this, a Brewers win and a Cubs loss today puts the Brewers back in first place...hard to believe, huh? I still think if this team can keep its head above water (1-2 games within first place) until Sheets returns, they'll be fine in September.

At least the past couple of nights we've seen better pitching performances from the starters...Bush had a good enough start to deserve a win in the Cardinals series finale and Suppan pitched pretty well last night considering the horrible defense he had behind him. Cut down on the errors and this team might actually start winning some games.

Hardy's been hitting really well out of the 8 spot, Shouse has been amazingly good in pressure situations (so good that I'm fearing that he'll have to come back down to earth on this road trip), Billy Hall has started to hit better, Jenkins is white hot, and Rickie was making solid contact for most of the Cincy series.

I might be one of the few, but I like the pitching matchups in the Arizona series -- Yo vs. Dougie, Bush vs. Livan Hernandez, Suppan vs. Webb. The Webb game is the only matchup where I'd give the Diamondbacks a clear advantage as far as starters go. The starting pitching has been decent enough the past few games, though, that I'm not too worried about that -- the bullpen needs to do a better job of holding leads considering that Arizona has one of the better bullpens in the NL. Late runs will be hard to come by, so the Brewers will probably have to score their runs against the starters.

As long as the Brewers don't limp into Chicago, I'm not going to get too worried.

Jenkins, Hardy and Gross are all hitting well right now. If this darn team can stay at least within 2-3 games of first place by the time Sheets comes back, the Crew still has a reasonable shot. Obviously, things are going to have to go much better on this road trip, however.

Nobody died as a direct result of this game... at least, none that I know about.

Everytime this happens, I die a little bit inside...does that count?

I think, collectively between all of us, a full person has died. We should just do some BF.net flag football during a game sometime, so we don't have to concentrate on the game.

Agreed. It would be nice if our pitching problems weren't coinciding with the games where those three are hitting the ball much much better than they have been as of late. With any luck, or without anymore meltdowns, we can pull off a 4-5 road trip, come back down three games or less and have a first half type homestand, putting us right back in the race.

Of course, this is all wishful thinking considering the fact we just had a 1-5 homestand, which can just be added to the list of times we've hit "rock bottom" over the last few weeks.

Its kind of sad that our best pitching for the year was July but between the offense all struggling and the bullpen blowing a few leads we ended up with a bad record. Now the hitting is turning around and the pitching is completely useless.

With the Cubs-Cardinals rainout, we can't lose another .5 game today. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Ben Sheets doesn't have to pitch in Arizona in a meaningful game where his lack of break on his curve ball won't hurt him. Plus, the Brewers probably won't have to look up at that high Arizona sky with a roof over their heads.

For the stretch run the record agianst the 9 teams the Cubs face is 32-34. The Cards is 40-35 against the 10 teams they face but are three games out and still below .500. The Brewers record against the 9 teams they have left are 37-35.

The first two games of this series are reminding me of the ending of Happy Gilmore when Happy says to Shooter McGavin "Happy learned how to putt....uh oh!" This is like the Brewers are telling the Cubs "The Brewers learned how to win on the road...uh oh!" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Maybe not, but it definitely feels good to see this team win a road series against one the NL's hottest teams.

We're looking good. Hitting the ball well and pitching well. That usually adds up to success. Tomorrow is another game and against a great pitcher. Good luck with that one!

We have nothing to lose tomorrow. Go in and try and play a good game.

But man, if we start to get on a roll here and take out the Giants and really lay it on the Cubs, that would be cool.

I like the offense right now. Weeks, Hall, and Hardy are all hitting the ball hard - Weeks especially has looked like a completely different player since coming back up from Nashville. Braun has cooled a bit but that was inevitable and given his swing I doubt he falls to the doldrums experienced by Hardy and Weeks this year.
