Front Page Article: Comparing the '92 team to the '08 squad

jflick1215

I just posted, with Brian's help, an article that goes in depth, comparing the '92 team to this year's Crew. Since I was only 4 in the '82 season, the '92 team is certainly the best that I've followed...at least up to this point. That team had amazing pitching, particularly out of the pen, and finished with a 92-70 record, 4 games in back of World Champion Toronto. Had the Wild Card been in effect, the Brewers would've been in the playoffs. FYI, on 7/21 of that year, the Brewers were 49-43, 7.5 games out of first, and 3.5 games behind 2nd place Baltimore. They would get to just two games back with 3 to play, but in the end Toronto, bouyed by the acqusition of David Cone while the Brewers didn't add anyone, took the East. Enjoy!

The 92 team was one that just came together and has a ton of stuff fall right for them that season. Most of the pitchers had one of if not their best seasons that year. The offense was aggresive on the bases and made things happen as it lack some big sticks in the middle.

I'm not sold that this team would have been put over the top with big stick added to the middle of the lineup, it was just not that type of team.

I saw a White Sox game that year that Scott Fletcher hit a HR down the left field line that just went out to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. What I took from that game was Yount coming to Listach's side when he was taken out by a cheap slide at second, the bullpens went over the wall in support and everyone was on the field. No punches were thrown, but you knew the Brewers team had each others back.

Two weeks before Molly signed with the Blue Jays he came to UW-Stevens Point for a speech. I got the chance with other media to interview him. He talked about the tight bond of the team and how magical the season was for him and the team, it was his hit streak season. Molly was a total class act and I think he knew that 92 was a mirage and not the start to some good Brewer teams to come.

it was his hit streak season.
His hitting streak was in 1987.

It's true that a lot of things went right that year, and a lot of things went wrong after that. Bosio, Molly, Seitzer let go. Replacing Sufhoff with Nilsson behind the plate. Navarro falling apart. Wegman getting hurt again.

The pitching in 1992 was pretty incredible. Cal Eldred looked like he would lead the rotation for years to come. The '92 was the first team i really followed (i was 7-8) and have been a brewer fan ever since. They will always hold a special place in my heart.

Your right, that I always remeber the video of them playing the hit streak to begin his speech.

I played in an area local baseball league for years after high school, one team put Cal Eldred on there roster in the mid 90s as a joke while he was injured.

One thing that jumped out at me was the 256 stolen bases for the 1992 team which ranked 1st in the American League. What a lost art this is. The leader for this season is the Tampa Bay Rays with 103 in 97 games, projected out to be 172 for the season.
