Brewerfan has been screening membership applications for the past three years or so. Up until the past few months, the member application process served basically as a way to let board administrators know that there was a new member.

More recently, the MBA (Membership by Approval) application has been used as a means to screen for potential posting quality. A lot of applications are denied because they come through with only a two or three word message. You can tell from the link that b19 provides that Brewerfan is requesting more than that.

Also, b19 notifies all moderators of approvals and denials. That way, the mods know someone new is around.

LambeauLeap has been a lot more "loose" with membership applications. In part, that's because almost everyone who applies is familiar to us anyway. Also, with the board being much smaller, keeping track of new members isn't very difficult. Peavey and I have been processing MBAs over there.

Some new members confuse the Yuku signup process with board membership approval. The Yuku signup screens for stuff like spambots. Part of that process is that members must enter a verification code and confirm their e-mail address. The Brewerfan application addresses the human element.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I think we should make existing members re-apply periodically - like going to the DMV every 10 years to get your eyes tested. That would be fun. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
